The Nissan QG13DE engine is a 1.3-liter,
inline-four, four-stroke, water-cooled gasoline engine designed as part
of Nissan’s QG engine family. Introduced in the early 2000s, the QG13DE
was engineered for compact passenger cars in markets requiring
small-displacement yet durable and fuelefficient powerplants. It is best
known for powering regional Nissan Sunny, Almera, Pulsar, and Sentra
variants.
The QG13DE emphasizes a balance of economy, smoothness, and mechanical
reliability, featuring an aluminum cylinder head, cast-iron block, dual
overhead camshafts, multi-point fuel injection, electronic ignition, and
low internal friction design.
While modest in power output, the QG13DE delivers surprisingly strong
mid-range drivability due to efficient combustion chamber shaping, wide
intake manifolding, and well-calibrated electronic fuelinjection
mapping. The engine’s simple but robust electronic control system and
conservative output ensure long service life.
The QG13DE engine has a displacement of 1,295 cc (79.0 cu in). Bore is
approx. 71.0 mm (2.80 inches), and stroke is approx. 82.0 mm (3.23
inches), giving the engine a long-stroke configuration ideal for
mid-range torque. The compression ratio is 9.5:1 depending on market
variation. Maximum output is 84-87 hp at 5,200-6,000 rpm. Maximum torque
is 82-88 lb-ft (111-119 Nm) at 2,800-3,600 rpm. Idle speed is 700-750
rpm. Firing order is 1-3-4-2.
The cast-iron block is designed for high rigidity and long-term
durability. Cylinders are finishhoned to reduce friction. The
forged-steel crankshaft rotates on five main bearings. Pistons are
aluminum alloy with low-friction coatings and a three-ring pack.
Connecting rods are forged steel with floating wrist pins. The block
incorporates oil jets aimed at piston undersides for thermal control in
select variants.
The QG13DE uses an aluminum DOHC cylinder head with four valves per
cylinder.
The valvetrain includes:
- Double overhead camshafts
- Chain-driven timing system
- Hydraulic lifters for automatic lash adjustment
- Roller rocker arms (low-friction)
The combustion chambers are compact with swirl-optimized porting. Intake
ports encourage fast mixture movement for efficient burn. Exhaust ports
are short and optimized for rapid heat evacuation. Spark plugs are
centrally located for consistent ignition. The timing chain uses a
hydraulic tensioner and is designed for the lifespan of the engine when
oil quality is maintained.
The QG13DE employs a multi-point electronic fuel injection (MPFI)
system.
Major components include:
- Electric in-tank fuel pump
- High-pressure fuel rail
- Multi-hole injectors
- Mass-airflow (MAF) sensor
- Throttle body (electronic or cable depending on model)
- Engine Control Module (ECM)
Fuel pressure is 43-50 psi. The injection pattern is calibrated to
deliver fine atomization for economy and low emissions. The ECM controls
fuel delivery using data from oxygen sensors, throttle-position sensor,
coolant temperature sensor, crank-angle sensor, and MAF sensor.
The QG13DE uses a full-pressure wet-sump lubrication system.
Specifications:
- Oil capacity: 3.0-3.3 liters (3.2-3.5 US qt)
- Operating oil pressure: approx. 45-65 psi at 3,000 rpm; approx. 15-20
psi at idle
- Recommended oil viscosity: 5W-30 or 10W-30
The oil pump is driven by the crankshaft. Oil circulates through the
block, crankshaft journals, connecting-rod bearings, camshaft journals,
timing-chain galleries, and valvetrain. The engine uses a full-flow
spin-on oil filter. Low-friction internal components reduce wear when
regular oil changes are observed.
The cooling system is liquid-cooled using a belt-driven centrifugal
water pump.
Specifications:
- Thermostat begins to open at approx. 82°C (180°F)
- Fully open at approx. 95°C (203°F)
- Cooling-system capacity: 5.5-6.0 liters (5.8-6.3 US qt)
Coolant flows through block galleries, head passages, thermostat
housing, radiator, and heater core. The QG13DE is tolerant of high
ambient temperatures but depends on clean coolant channels and proper
thermostat operation.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
The induction system includes:
- Air-filter housing
- Replaceable paper air filter
- Intake snorkel
- MAF sensor
- Throttle body
- Long-runner plastic intake manifold
The intake manifold is tuned for improved torque at low-to-mid-range
rpm. The system is engineered for low restriction and consistent air
delivery.
The exhaust system includes:
- Cast-steel or stainless-steel exhaust manifold
- Front catalytic converter
- Rear underbody catalytic converter (certain markets)
- Oxygen sensors (upstream and downstream)
- Muffler system
Backpressure is kept moderate to maintain fuel efficiency. The system
meets emissions standards without sacrificing drivability.
The ignition system is fully electronic
with:
- Coil-on-plug ignition (one coil per cylinder)
- Crankshaft position sensor
- Camshaft position sensor
- ECM-controlled spark timing
Spark-plug gap ranges 0.9-1.1 mm (0.035-0.043 inches). Ignition timing
is continuously adjusted by the ECM for best efficiency, knock control,
and smooth combustion.
- Length: 600-650 mm (23.6-25.6 in)
- Width: 550-600 mm (21.6-23.6 in)
- Height: 650-700 mm (25.6-27.6 in)
Dry weight: 105-120 kg (231-265 lb) depending on accessories
Intervals:
- Oil and filter: every 5,000-10,000 km (3,000-6,000 mi)
- Air filter: every 20,000 km (12,000 mi)
- Fuel filter: non-serviceable (in-tank)
- Spark plugs: every 40,000-60,000 km
- Coolant replacement: every 2 years
- Drive-belt inspection: every 20,000 km
Compression pressure:
- Approx. 160-190 psi
- Variation: less than 10 percent
Idle speed should remain stable at approx. 700-750 rpm.
- Cylinder-head bolts: approx. 75-85 lb-ft (102-115 Nm)
- Main-bearing-cap bolts: approx. 55-65 lb-ft (75-88 Nm)
- Connecting-rod bolts: approx. 30-35 lb-ft (40-48 Nm)
- Flywheel bolts: approx. 70-80 lb-ft (95-108 Nm)
- Intake-manifold bolts: approx. 18-22 lb-ft (24-30 Nm)
