The Volvo B234F is a 2.3-liter, four-cylinder,
naturally aspirated gasoline engine, belonging to the final evolution of
Volvo's "red block" engine family. This engine represents a significant
technical departure by incorporating a 16-valve, dual overhead camshaft
(DOHC) cylinder head mounted on the classic, robust B230 series
cast-iron block. Developed in the early 1990s for the 940 series, the
B234F combines the proven durability and torque characteristics of the
red block bottom end with the improved breathing and efficiency of a
multi-valve design. It utilizes Bosch LH-Jetronic 3.2 electronic fuel
injection and a cross-flow aluminum cylinder head.
The engine delivers smooth, linear power with a higher revving character
than its 8-valve counterparts, offering improved specific output and
refinement. The B234F maintains the legendary strength and
serviceability of the red block lineage while introducing modern
valvetrain complexity. It stands as a unique and sought-after variant,
bridging the gap between traditional Volvo engineering and contemporary
engine design, prized for its balance of performance potential and
inherent toughness.

Material: Aluminum alloy. This is a significant change from the
cast-iron heads used on 8-valve red blocks. Head Construction: Dual
overhead camshafts (DOHC), 16-valve design (4 valves per cylinder). The
camshafts are driven by a single, reinforced timing belt.
Valve Arrangement: Valves are arranged in a cross-flow, pent-roof
combustion chamber. They are actuated via bucket tappets with shims for
manual valve clearance adjustment. This is an interference engine.
Variable Valve Timing: None.
Valve Diameters: Intake: 31.0 mm / 1.220 in. Exhaust: 27.5 mm / 1.083
in.

This is an electronic, speed-density system using a manifold absolute
pressure (MAP) sensor.
Engine Management: Bosch ECU (EZK 162/163 ignition system integrated
with LH fuel control).
Fuel Delivery: An electric in-tank fuel pump supplies pressure to the
fuel rail.
Fuel Rail and Injectors: Four electronic fuel injectors.
Throttle Body: Single-bore, cable-operated throttle body.
Air Intake: Naturally aspirated via an air filter, air mass meter, and a
cast aluminum intake manifold.
Type: Pressure-fed, full-flow filtration with a gear-type oil pump.
Oil Pump: Gear-type pump, driven by the crankshaft via a short shaft and
gear.
Oil Filter: Full-flow, spin-on canister type.
Oil Cooler: Not standard equipment on this naturally aspirated variant.
Oil Capacity (including filter): 5.0 L / 5.3 US qt.
Recommended Oil Grade: High-quality semi-synthetic or full synthetic
engine oil meeting API SG/SH or later. Viscosity: 10W-40 or 15W-40.
Operating Oil Pressure: 2.0 bar at hot idle, 3.5 - 4.5 bar at 2000 rpm.
Imperial: 29 psi (idle), 51 - 65 psi (2000 rpm).
Type: Pressurized, single-circuit system with a separate expansion tank.
Water Pump: Centrifugal pump, driven by the timing belt.
Thermostat: Wax pellet type, opening temperature 88°C (190°F).
Coolant Capacity: 8.5 L / 9.0 US qt (entire system).
Coolant Type: Ethylene glycol-based antifreeze.
Electrical System: 12-volt negative ground.
Ignition System: Bosch EZK 162/163 electronic distributor-based
ignition, integrated with the fuel injection ECU.
Engine Management: Combined Bosch LH-Jetronic 3.2 (fuel) and EZK 162/163
(ignition) systems.

The Volvo B234F 16-valve engine had a limited production run and was
used in specific Volvo models in the early 1990s. Volvo 940 (1991-1992):
940 SE 16V, 940 GLE 16V. This was the primary and most common
application. Volvo 740 (1990-1991): A very limited number of
late-production 740 GLE 16V models in select markets.
This engine was never officially sold in the North American market. Its
production was primarily for European markets where its higher specific
output and technology were competitive. It is a rare and desirable
variant among Volvo red block enthusiasts.
