The Ford 4EB engine is a durable,
medium-displacement, four-cylinder diesel engine developed by Ford Motor
Company for light commercial vehicles, agricultural machinery, and
industrial applications. It represents an evolution of Ford’s
mechanically governed diesel engines, emphasizing reliability,
simplicity, and strong low-speed torque rather than high specific
output. The 4EB was designed to operate for extended periods under
constant load, often in harsh environments where fuel quality, ambient
temperatures, and maintenance resources could vary significantly.
The design philosophy of the Ford 4EB centers on robust cast-iron
construction, conservative operating speeds, and minimal reliance on
electronics. These characteristics make the engine highly serviceable in
the field and well suited for fleet, agricultural, and industrial use.
With proper maintenance, the 4EB engine is capable of very high service
mileage or operating hours before major overhaul, earning a reputation
as a dependable workhorse.
The Ford 4EB is a four-stroke, water-cooled, inline four-cylinder diesel
engine using a mechanical fuel injection system. Combustion is based on
indirect injection with pre-combustion chambers, providing smooth
operation and reduced combustion noise. The engine is naturally
aspirated and mechanically governed.
Engine type: Four-stroke, water-cooled diesel
Number of cylinders: 4
Cylinder arrangement: Inline
Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
Combustion system: Indirect injection (IDI)
Cooling system: Liquid, forced circulation
Fuel system: Mechanical diesel injection
Firing order: 1-3-4-2
Direction of rotation: Clockwise when viewed from the front
Governor type: Mechanical centrifugal
Total displacement is approximately 2.5 liters (152 cubic inches). The
bore and stroke dimensions provide a balanced configuration that favors
torque production and long-term durability while allowing moderate
engine speeds.
Bore: approximately 93.7 mm (3.68 in)
Stroke: approximately 90.5 mm (3.57 in)
Compression ratio: approximately 21.0-22.0:1
Rated power output: 70-78 hp (52-58 kW) at 3,800-4,000 rpm
Maximum torque: 155-170 Nm (114-125 lb-ft) at 2,000-2,200 rpm
Idle speed: 750 ± 50 rpm
Maximum governed speed: approximately 4,200 rpm
The relatively high compression ratio ensures reliable cold starting and
efficient combustion. The torque curve is flat and predictable, making
the engine suitable for applications requiring steady pulling power.
The cylinder block is manufactured from high-strength cast iron and
features deep skirts for increased rigidity. Generous wall thickness
around the cylinders allows for reboring during overhaul, extending the
engine’s service life. Some variants use replaceable wet or semi-wet
liners sealed with rubber O-rings at the lower end to prevent coolant
leakage.
The crankshaft is supported by five main bearings, each fitted with
steel-backed, tri-metal bearing shells. Main bearing caps are heavy-duty
castings secured with high-tensile bolts. Thrust washers located at the
center main bearing control crankshaft end float. Internal oil galleries
are cast into the block to supply pressurized oil to the main bearings,
camshaft bearings, and valve train components. External oil lines are
minimized to reduce potential leak points.
The cylinder head is a single-piece cast-iron design optimized for
thermal stability and durability. Indirect injection versions employ
pre-combustion chambers installed in the head, creating strong swirl
during compression for smooth and efficient combustion.
The valvetrain is of the overhead valve (OHV) type, with one intake and
one exhaust valve per cylinder. Valves are actuated by a block-mounted
camshaft through hydraulic tappets or mechanical tappets, pushrods, and
rocker arms depending on variant.
The valve dimensions:
Intake valve diameter: approximately 38 mm (1.50 in)
Exhaust valve diameter: approximately 33 mm (1.30 in)
Valves are manufactured from heat-resistant alloy steel. Exhaust valves
are frequently stellite-faced for improved resistance to heat and wear.
Valve seats are replaceable hardened inserts interference-fitted into
the cylinder head. Valve lash is manually adjustable using
screw-and-locknut adjusters on the rocker arms.
The valve clearances (cold):
Intake: 0.30 mm (0.012 in)
Exhaust: 0.35 mm (0.014 in)
The camshaft is located within the engine block and is manufactured from
hardened cast iron or forged steel. It is driven by a reinforced toothed
timing belt or gear train, depending on application and production year.
Timing belt replacement interval: 80,000-100,000 km (50,000-60,000
miles). The timing system also drives the mechanical fuel injection pump
and oil pump. Accurate timing is critical for correct injection timing
and valve operation.
The Ford 4EB engine uses a fully mechanical diesel fuel system designed
for simplicity and durability. Fuel is drawn from the tank by a
mechanical lift pump and passed through a primary sedimenter or water
separator, followed by a fine paper fuel filter. Fuel injectors are
pintle-type with multi-hole nozzles, designed to deliver finely atomized
fuel into the pre-combustion chambers. Injection timing is mechanically
set and adjustable during servicing.
Injection pump type: Rotary or inline mechanical pump (commonly
CAV/Lucas or Bosch, market dependent).
Injection pressure: Approximately 140-180 bar (2,030-2,610 psi).
Recommended fuel: Automotive diesel fuel with a minimum cetane rating of
45.
Fuel system maintenance:
Fuel filter replacement every 15,000-20,000 km (9,000-12,000 miles)
Injector inspection and calibration every 40,000-60,000 km
(25,000-37,000 miles)
The lubrication system is a full-pressure, wet-sump design. A gear-type
oil pump driven by the camshaft or crankshaft draws oil from the sump
through a steel mesh pickup strainer.
Pressurized oil is supplied to:
Main bearings
Connecting rod bearings
Camshaft bearings
Valve train components
Timing components
A full-flow spin-on oil filter removes contaminants before oil is
distributed to the engine.
Oil capacity with filter: Approximately 6.5 liters (6.9 US quarts, 5.7
Imp quarts).
Recommended oil: SAE 15W-40 diesel-rated oil meeting API CF or higher
specifications.
Oil change interval: Every 7,500-10,000 km (4,500-6,000 miles) or 250
operating hours.
Oil pressure:
Idle: 80-120 kPa (12-17 psi)
At 3,000 rpm: 300-450 kPa (44-65 psi)
The cooling system is a pressurized, closed-loop liquid system with
forced circulation. A belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulates
coolant through the engine block, cylinder head, radiator, and heater
circuit.
Thermostat:
Opening temperature: 82°C (180°F)
Fully open temperature: 95°C (203°F)
Cooling system capacity: Approximately 9.0 liters (9.5 US quarts, 7.9
Imp quarts)
System pressure: 70-90 kPa (10-13 psi)
Recommended coolant: 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol antifreeze and
distilled water
Coolant replacement interval: Every 30,000 km (18,600 miles) or 2 years

a metal or plastic casing. Industrial variants may use oil-bath or
cyclone pre-cleaners for dusty environments.

application, including horizontal mufflers or vertical stacks.
