The Mazda B6ZE, frequently designated as B6-ZE(RS), is
a 1.6-liter inline-4 gasoline engine developed specifically for the
first-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata (NA). Derived from the broader B-series engine
family, the B6ZE was engineered with a focus on longitudinal, rear-wheel-drive
packaging and high-rpm performance. The engine combines a cast iron cylinder
block with an aluminum alloy cylinder head, utilizing a belt-driven dual
overhead camshaft (DOHC) 16-valve valvetrain.
Distinct from transverse-mounted B6 variants, the B6ZE incorporates unique
components including a lightened crankshaft, a finned aluminum oil sump for
enhanced cooling, and a non-interference valvetrain design. Produced throughout
the NA MX-5 production run from 1989 through 1998, the engine is recognized for
its responsive character, mechanical robustness, and serviceability.

Valvetrain Configuration: Dual Overhead Camshaft (DOHC), 16 valves (4 valves per
cylinder).
Camshafts are driven by a toothed timing belt.
Early production engines (1989-1993) utilize hydraulic lash adjusters integrated
into the cam followers, eliminating routine valve clearance adjustments.
The cylinder block is constructed from cast iron with
an open-deck design. Bore diameter measures 78.0 mm (3.07 in). The block
features a deep-skirt architecture extending below the crankshaft centerline to
provide rigidity for the main bearing supports.
The crankshaft is a lightened nodular cast iron unit specific to the B6ZE,
incorporating enlarged fillet radii at the journal transitions for increased
fatigue strength while maintaining reduced reciprocating mass compared to
standard B6 crankshafts.
Five main bearings support the crankshaft. The block incorporates a unique oil
sump interface designed for a finned aluminum oil pan that serves both
lubrication storage and heat dissipation functions. Cylinder bores are machined
with a plateau honed finish and utilize cast iron liners integrally cast into
the block.
The cylinder head is manufactured from aluminum alloy
and features a pent-roof combustion chamber design with four valves per cylinder
arranged in a cross-flow configuration.
Valves: 16 total; 8 intake, 8 exhaust.
Intake Valve Diameter: 33.0 mm (1.30 in).
Exhaust Valve Diameter: 28.0 mm (1.10 in).
Valve Stem Diameter: 6.0 mm (0.24 in) for both intake and exhaust.
Valve Seat Inserts: Sintered alloy seats with multi-angle seat geometry
(three-angle intake, single-angle exhaust on early variants).
Valve Guides: Cast iron guides pressed into the cylinder head.
Hydraulic Lash Adjusters: Incorporated into the cam followers (bucket-type) on
1989-1993 variants. These adjusters automatically maintain zero valve clearance
using engine oil pressure. Late-production engines (1994 onward in certain
markets) transitioned to mechanical lash adjusters requiring periodic clearance
inspection.
Camshafts: Chilled cast iron camshafts with specific profiles optimized for
mid-range torque and high-rpm power delivery. Intake camshaft duration is
approximately 240 degrees at 1.0 mm lift; exhaust camshaft duration is 244
degrees. Valve Springs: Progressive-rate springs with a resonance frequency
engineered to avoid valve float within the engine’s operating range.
The fuel system employs multi-point electronic fuel
injection based on a Bosch L-Jetronic architecture adapted for Mazda. Fuel
Injection Type: Sequential multi-port injection with fuel injectors positioned
in the intake manifold runners, directing fuel toward the intake valves. Engine
Management System: Mazda-engineered ECU utilizing inputs from an air flow meter
(flap-type), throttle position sensor, coolant temperature sensor, intake air
temperature sensor, and oxygen sensor.
Air Flow Meter: Flap-type (vane) air flow meter measuring intake air volume
directly. Fuel Pressure: Regulated to 2.4-2.7 bar (35-39 psi) via a
vacuum-referenced fuel pressure regulator mounted on the fuel rail. Injector
Flow Rate: Approximately 180-200 cc/min at standard operating pressure. Fuel
Pump: In-tank electric fuel pump delivering a flow rate sufficient for maximum
engine output with reserve capacity.
The lubrication system is a full-flow, pressurized type
utilizing a rotor-type oil pump driven directly from the crankshaft nose. Oil
Pump Type: Internal gear (gerotor) pump mounted to the front of the crankshaft,
housed within the front timing cover assembly. Oil Capacity: 3.4-3.6 liters
(3.6-3.8 qt) including oil filter replacement. The finned aluminum oil sump
contributes to overall capacity and provides increased surface area for heat
dissipation.
Recommended Oil Viscosity: 5W-30, 10W-30, or 10W-40 depending on ambient
temperature range. Oil Quality Requirement: API SG, SH, SJ, or later
classifications. Oil Pressure: At warm idle, pressure ranges from 1.0-2.0 bar
(14-29 psi); at 3,000 rpm, pressure reaches 3.5-4.5 bar (51-65 psi). Oil Cooler:
Not equipped as standard. Heat dissipation is aided by the finned aluminum sump
design, which serves as a passive oil cooler through exposure to airflow. Oil
Filter: Full-flow spin-on canister type mounted to the cylinder block adjacent
to the sump.
The cooling system is pressurized and utilizes a
centrifugal water pump driven by the timing belt. Water Pump Type: Centrifugal
pump with a cast iron housing and stamped steel impeller. Coolant Capacity:
5.5-6.0 liters (5.8-6.3 qt) inclusive of engine block, heater core, and
radiator.
Radiator: Cross-flow aluminum core with plastic end tanks. Cooling fan
configuration consists of a single electric thermostatically controlled fan on
manual transmission variants; automatic transmission variants utilize a dual fan
configuration or an auxiliary fan for transmission oil cooler assist.
System Pressure: Radiator cap rated at 1.1 bar (16 psi). Coolant Specification:
Ethylene glycol-based coolant with corrosion inhibitors suitable for mixed-metal
(cast iron and aluminum) engine construction. Thermostat: Wax-pellet type
located in the coolant outlet housing. Opening temperature is 82-88 °C (180-190
°F) depending on market and emissions specifications.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Exhaust System: Cast iron exhaust manifold with a
four-into-two-into-one collector design optimized for exhaust pulse scavenging.
A single catalytic converter is mounted in the exhaust downpipe for emissions
control.
Intake Manifold: Aluminum dual-runner design with a variable intake system on
certain markets. The manifold incorporates a resonance chamber to optimize
volumetric efficiency across the engine speed range.
Distributor-based ignition with a crank-angle sensor
integrated into the distributor assembly. The distributor houses the ignition
coil on early variants; later variants utilize a separate coil and external
igniter. Spark timing is electronically controlled by the engine control unit
based on engine speed, air flow, and coolant temperature inputs.
Timing System: Toothed timing belt constructed from
high-tensile rubber with fiber reinforcement. The belt drives the intake and
exhaust camshafts, water pump, and (on certain variants) the oil pump drive. An
automatic spring-loaded tensioner maintains belt tension. The engine is
non-interference; timing belt failure does not result in piston-to-valve
contact.
Crankcase Ventilation: Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system with a PCV
valve mounted in the intake manifold and a breather hose routed from the valve
cover to the air intake duct.
Overall Length: 580 mm (22.8 in) measured from
