The Toyota 2TR-FE is a 2.7-liter, naturally aspirated
inline-four engine from the TR family, introduced in 2004 as a replacement for
the 3RZ-FE. Designed with a focus on durability and low-to-mid-range torque, the
2TR-FE was engineered for sport utility vehicles, pickups, and commercial vans
requiring long-term reliability under demanding operating conditions.
The engine features a cast iron cylinder block, aluminum alloy cylinder head,
dual overhead camshafts with VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence),
and multi-point fuel injection. Later variants incorporate Dual VVT-i with
phasing on both intake and exhaust camshafts. The 2TR-FE utilizes a square bore
and stroke design, twin balance shafts to manage secondary vibrations, and a
maintenance-free timing chain system.

valves per cylinder). The intake camshaft is equipped with VVT-i (Variable Valve
Timing with intelligence) on early variants; later variants utilize Dual VVT-i
with phasing on both intake and exhaust camshafts. Camshafts are driven by a
silent timing chain. Hydraulic lash adjusters are incorporated, eliminating
routine manual valve clearance adjustments.
The cylinder block is manufactured from cast iron with
a deep-skirt design extending below the crankshaft centerline. Bore diameter
measures 95.0 mm (3.74 in). The cast iron construction provides the rigidity
required for sustained high-load operation in truck and SUV applications. The
crankshaft is forged steel with eight counterweights, supported by five main
bearings.
The block incorporates an integrated oil
gallery system feeding the main bearings, connecting rods, and VVT-i
components. Twin balance shafts are mounted within the crankcase to
cancel secondary vibrations inherent in large-displacement inline-four
engines; these shafts rotate at twice engine speed in opposite
directions and are driven by a chain from the crankshaft.
The cylinder head is manufactured from aluminum alloy
with pent-roof combustion chambers and cross-flow port architecture.
