The Toyota 2TZ-FE is a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated
inline-four gasoline engine produced from 1990 through 1997, distinguished by
its unique 75-degree slanted mounting orientation engineered specifically for
the Toyota Previa (Estima) mid-engine minivan. This powerplant was developed as
part of a unconventional vehicle architecture where the engine was placed
beneath the floor, requiring the cylinder block to be rotated nearly on its side
to maintain a flat interior cabin floor and a low center of gravity.
The 2TZ-FE represents one of the most unusual engine installations in
mass-production automotive history, incorporating specialized ancillary systems
to support this mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration. The engine’s
architecture centers on a cast iron cylinder block with an aluminum alloy
cylinder head, a combination that provides durability for a powerplant designed
for long service intervals in a heavy vehicle application.
The 2,438 cc displacement is achieved through a 95.0 mm bore and 86.0 mm stroke,
an under-square configuration favoring low-end torque production. The double
overhead camshaft (DOHC) valvetrain operates 16 valves through direct-acting
bucket tappets, with the camshafts driven by a timing chain designed for the
engine’s service life. The compression ratio of 9.3:1 is calibrated for
multi-point fuel injection and naturally aspirated operation.
Power output is rated at 98 to 101 kW (132 to 135 hp) at 5,000 rpm, with torque
reaching 210 Nm (154 lb-ft) at 4,000 rpm. The engine’s power band is tuned for
the Previa’s weight and duty cycle, emphasizing low-end response over peak
output. The 75° slanted orientation necessitated a dry-sump-style lubrication
system with a separate oil reservoir to maintain oil pickup under all operating
conditions.
Accessories including the alternator, air conditioning compressor, and engine
cooling fan are mounted at the front of the vehicle and driven by the
Supplementary Accessory Drive System (SADS), a shaft connecting the crankshaft
to the front-mounted accessory cluster. This configuration allowed the engine to
be positioned entirely beneath the floor while maintaining service access to
common wear components.
The 2TZ-FE operates on a four-stroke gasoline cycle with multi-point fuel
injection. The engine utilizes an inline four-cylinder configuration with a
double overhead camshaft (DOHC) and four valves per cylinder, mounted at a
75-degree angle from vertical.

mounting).
The cylinder block is constructed from high-strength
cast iron with a deep-skirt design that extends below the crankshaft centerline.
The block is rotated 75° from vertical in its installed orientation, a
configuration that required specific modifications to the oiling system and
engine mount brackets. The material choice provides the durability required for
the Previa’s heavy vehicle weight and the extended service intervals anticipated
for this engine family.
The cylinder bores are integrally cast into the block with no replaceable
liners. Each bore is induction-hardened to provide a durable wear surface for
the piston rings. The water jackets surrounding the cylinder bores are
configured to provide uniform cooling despite the slanted installation angle.
Main bearing caps are manufactured from nodular cast iron and are secured with
two bolts each. The main bearing structure incorporates reinforcing ribs
extending from the main bearing bulkheads to the lower crankcase area.
Crankshaft: Forged steel with five main bearings, fully counter-weighted with
eight counterweights. The crankshaft features induction-hardened bearing
surfaces and incorporates a torsional vibration damper at the front end.
Main Bearing Journal Diameter: 60.0 mm (2.36 in). Connecting Rod Journal
Diameter: 52.0 mm (2.05 in). Connecting Rods: Forged steel with machined mating
surfaces and locating dowels. Piston Material: Cast aluminum alloy with anodized
ring grooves and a low-friction skirt coating. Piston Cooling: Oil splash from
the connecting rod bearings provides piston cooling; no dedicated oil jets are
present.
The cylinder head is a single-piece cast aluminum alloy
construction spanning all four cylinders. The DOHC configuration places two
camshafts in the head - one intake and one exhaust - operating four valves per
cylinder through inverted bucket-type tappets. The camshafts are driven by a
timing chain at the front of the engine.
Valvetrain: Double overhead camshaft (DOHC) with four valves per cylinder,
totaling 16 valves. The valvetrain utilizes mechanical bucket tappets with shims
for valve clearance adjustment. Hydraulic lash adjusters are not used in this
engine.
Intake Valve Diameter: 34.0 mm (1.34 in)
Exhaust Valve Diameter: 29.0 mm (1.14 in)
Valve Lift (Intake): 8.5 mm (0.335 in)
Valve Lift (Exhaust): 8.5 mm (0.335 in)
Valve Clearance (cold): Intake 0.15-0.25 mm (0.006-0.010 in)
Valve Clearance (cold): Exhaust 0.25-0.35 mm (0.010-0.014 in)
Valve Seat Material: High-strength sintered alloy with induction-hardened
contact surfaces
Valve Spring Material: High-tensile steel with a conventional cylindrical design
Camshaft Drive: Silent-type Morse timing chain with an automatic hydraulic
tensioner. The chain drives from a sprocket on the crankshaft to the intake
camshaft sprocket, with a secondary chain transferring drive from the intake to
the exhaust camshaft. The chain system is designed for the engine’s service life
with no scheduled replacement interval.
The fuel system is a multi-point fuel injection system
with sequential injection. Each cylinder receives fuel from an individual
injector mounted in the intake manifold runner, positioned immediately upstream
of the intake valve.
Fuel Injectors: High-impedance solenoid-type injectors with a flow rate
calibrated to the naturally aspirated engine. Fuel Pressure: 250-300 kPa (36-44
psi) regulated by a vacuum-referenced pressure regulator mounted on the fuel
rail. Fuel Rail: Aluminum rail shared across all four cylinders. Intake
Manifold: Cast aluminum manifold with a plenum chamber feeding four individual
runners.
The manifold is designed to fit within the constrained space beneath the vehicle
floor, with a compact profile that accommodates the 75° engine slant. Throttle
Body: Cable-actuated throttle body with an integrated idle air control (IAC)
valve and throttle position sensor. Fuel Requirement: Minimum octane rating of
87 AKI (91 RON) for standard operation.
The lubrication system is a specialized design adapted
for the 75° slanted engine orientation. Unlike conventional wet-sump systems,
the 2TZ-FE incorporates a dry-sump-style configuration with a separate oil
reservoir to ensure consistent oil pickup under all operating conditions,
including cornering and acceleration that would otherwise expose the oil pickup
in a slanted engine.
Oil Pump Type: Gear-type pump driven by the crankshaft, mounted within the
engine structure. Oil Reservoir: Separate oil tank located at a lower point in
the vehicle chassis, connected to the engine via oil lines. Recommended Oil
Viscosity: 10W-30 or 5W-30 conventional or synthetic oil meeting API SG, SH, SJ,
or higher specifications. Oil Capacity (including filter and reservoir): 5.8-6.0
liters (6.1-6.3 qt).
Oil Pressure (at idle, warm): 70-150 kPa (10-22 psi). Oil Pressure (at 3,000
rpm, warm): 300-400 kPa (44-58 psi). Oil Filter Type: Spin-on full-flow filter
with integral bypass valve and anti-drainback valve. Oil Cooler: Not equipped on
standard 2TZ-FE variants. Oil Pan: Specialized design with oil pickup and return
lines for the remote reservoir system.
The cooling system is a pressurized, thermostatically
controlled circuit utilizing a belt-driven centrifugal water pump. The system is
designed to manage thermal loads in the mid-engine configuration, where the
engine is located beneath the floor with restricted airflow.
Water Pump Type: Centrifugal with a mechanical seal, mounted to the front of the
cylinder block and driven by the timing chain. Coolant Type: Ethylene-glycol
based antifreeze meeting Toyota specification. Coolant Capacity (engine and
radiator): 9.0-10.0 liters (9.5-10.6 qt) depending on vehicle configuration.

and a full-open temperature of 95 °C (203 °F). Radiator: Front-mounted
cross-flow aluminum radiator with plastic tanks, connected to the engine via
long coolant hoses running the length of the vehicle. Cooling Fan: Electric fan
assembly mounted at the front radiator, controlled by engine coolant temperature
sensor and air conditioning system demand.
Timing Drive: Silent-type Morse timing chain with an
automatic hydraulic tensioner. The tensioner utilizes engine oil pressure to
maintain chain tension. The chain guides are manufactured from nylon-faced
aluminum. The system is designed for the engine’s service life with no scheduled
replacement interval.
Accessory Drive: Supplementary Accessory Drive System (SADS) - a unique
configuration where the alternator, air conditioning compressor, and engine
cooling fan are mounted at the front of the vehicle rather than on the engine. A
shaft extends from the crankshaft through a flexible coupling to a front-mounted
gearbox that drives these accessories. This system allows the engine to be
positioned entirely beneath the floor while maintaining service access to common
wear components.
Ignition System: Distributor-based ignition system on early variants
(1990-1994); electronic distributorless ignition on later variants (1995-1997).
The distributor is mounted on the cylinder head at the front of the engine,
accessible from the engine compartment. Ignition timing is controlled by the
engine control unit with a fixed base timing setting. Spark Plugs: NGK BKR5EYA
or Denso K16R-U. Spark Plug Gap: 0.8-0.9 mm (0.031-0.035 in).
Engine Management System: Toyota electronic control unit (ECU) with integrated
fuel injection control, ignition timing control, and diagnostic functions. The
ECU utilizes a Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor for load detection.
Exhaust System: Cast iron exhaust manifold with a single outlet. The exhaust
system routes from the under-floor engine to the rear of the vehicle,
incorporating a catalytic converter and muffler.

The 2TZ-FE engine was developed specifically for the
Toyota Previa minivan platform and was not utilized in any other Toyota vehicle
line.
Toyota Previa (1990-1997): The first-generation Previa received the 2TZ-FE as
the sole gasoline engine option for the North American and European markets. The
engine was mounted longitudinally beneath the floor between the front seats,
driving the rear wheels through a conventional transmission and differential.
The Previa was offered with either a five-speed manual transmission or a
four-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel-drive variants utilized a transfer
case and a second differential to drive the front wheels. The 2TZ-FE remained in
production for the Previa until the model was replaced by the Toyota Sienna in
North America and the second-generation Previa in other markets.
Toyota Estima / Emina / Lucida (1990-1997): The Japanese domestic market
variants of the Previa - sold under the Estima, Emina, and Lucida nameplates -
received the 2TZ-FE as the base gasoline engine option. These variants included
additional body styles and seating configurations not offered in export markets,
with the engine installed in the same under-floor configuration as the export
Previa. Japanese market versions incorporated different emissions equipment and
engine management calibration to meet Japanese regulations.
