The Volkswagen AEX is a 1.4-liter, naturally
aspirated, four-cylinder gasoline engine from the VW Group's 1.4L MPI
(Multi-Point Injection) family. This engine represents a design
philosophy focused on economy, simplicity, and reliability over
performance, making it a common choice for entry-level and urban
vehicles in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Featuring a single overhead
camshaft (SOHC) and 8-valve architecture, it utilizes a Bosch Motronic
MP9.0 engine management system for multi-port fuel injection.
With an output of 60 Hp, it is tuned for low-end torque and fuel
efficiency rather than high-speed power, making it adequate for
light-duty use in compact cars. Its simple mechanical design and
non-interference valvetrain contribute to robust durability and ease of
maintenance, though its modest power output can be a limitation for
heavier vehicles or highway driving.
Engine Type: Inline-4 cylinder, liquid-cooled, naturally aspirated,
multi-point fuel injection (MPI).
Displacement: 1391 cc (1.391 L) / 84.9 cu.in. (Some sources list 1390
cc).
Bore x Stroke: 75.0 mm x 78.7 mm / 2.95 in x 3.10 in. (This matches the
common 1.4 MPI architecture; the 76.5x75.6 mm dimensions belong to other
1.4L variants).
Compression Ratio: 9.2:1 (standard for this MPI application); 10.2:1 (
for higher-compression variants).
Firing Order: 1-3-4-2. Direction of Rotation: Clockwise (viewed from the
front/flywheel end).
Maximum Power Output: 44 kW (60 hp) at 4700-5300 rpm.
Maximum Torque Output: 116 Nm (86 lb-ft) at 2800-3200 rpm.
Fuel Requirement: Unleaded gasoline, 91 RON (87 AKI) minimum.
Emission Standards Compliance: Designed to meet Euro 2/Euro 3 standards
with OBD II capability.
Material: Cast iron. Provides durability and longevity, contributing to
the engine's weight but also its robustness.
Construction: Conventional deep-skirt design with an integrated
crankcase. Features five main bearing supports. The block is designed
for low-cost, high-volume manufacturing.
Crankshaft: Cast nodular iron, supported by five main bearings. Main
bearing journal diameter: 54.0 mm / 2.126 in. Crankpin journal diameter:
45.0 mm / 1.772 in (approximate).
Pistons: aluminum alloy pistons with a flat or slightly dished crown.
Equipped with two compression rings and one oil control ring. Connecting
Rods: Forged steel I-beam connecting rods.
Material: aluminum alloy.
Head Construction: Single overhead camshaft (SOHC), 8-valve design (2
valves per cylinder). The camshaft is driven by a timing belt.
Valve Arrangement: Inline valves actuated directly by the camshaft lobes
via bucket-type hydraulic lifters (lash adjusters), providing
maintenance-free valve clearance.
Variable Valve Timing: None. Valve Diameters: Intake: 34.0 mm / 1.339
in. Exhaust: 29.0 mm / 1.142 in.
Injection Type: Multi-point fuel injection (MPI). Four individual
injectors mounted in the intake manifold runners.
Engine Management: Bosch Motronic MP9.0 system. This integrated system
controls fuel injection and ignition timing.
Fuel Delivery: An electric in-tank fuel pump supplies a constant
pressure (3.0 bar / 43.5 psi) to the fuel rail. Throttle Body:
Single-bore, cable-operated (non-drive-by-wire) throttle body. An idle
speed control valve or an integrated throttle body actuator manages
idle.
Air Intake: Naturally aspirated via an air filter housing and a plastic
intake manifold.
Type: Pressure-fed, full-flow filtration with a gear-type oil pump.
Oil Pump: Gear-type pump, driven directly by the crankshaft.
Oil Filter: Spin-on canister type, mounted on the side of the engine
block.
Oil Cooler: Not fitted. Oil Capacity (including filter): 3.5 L / 3.7 US
qt.
Recommended Oil Grade: Conventional or synthetic blend engine oil
meeting VW specification 501 01 or API SJ/SL. Viscosity: 10W-40 or
5W-40.
Operating Oil Pressure: 2.0 bar at hot idle (2000 rpm), minimum 3.0-4.0
bar at 2000 rpm or 29 psi (idle), 44-58 psi (2000 rpm).
Type: Pressurized, single-circuit system.
Water Pump: Centrifugal pump, driven by the timing belt.
Thermostat: Wax pellet type, begins opening at 87°C (189°F).
Coolant Capacity: 5.5 L / 5.8 US qt (entire system).
Coolant Type: VW G11 (blue) or G12 (pink) ethylene glycol-based
antifreeze.
Electrical System: 12-volt negative ground.
Ignition System: Distributorless ignition system (DIS) or static
high-voltage distribution, controlled by the Bosch Motronic MP9.0 ECU.
Uses a dual-spark ignition coil.
Engine Management: As stated, Bosch Motronic MP9.0 integrates fuel and
ignition control. Provides basic OBD-II diagnostics. Crankcase
Ventilation: Closed Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system.
Overall Length: 500 mm / 19.7 in.
Overall Width: 600 mm / 23.6 in.
Overall Height: 600 mm / 23.6 in.
Dry Weight: 105 kg / 231 lbs.
Engine Oil Change Interval: Every 15,000 km or 12 months (standard
service). Severe service: 7,500 km or 6 months or 9,300 miles / 4,700
miles. Oil Filter Change: Every oil change. Fuel Filter Change: Every
60,000 km (37,300 miles) or 48 months. Air Filter Change: Every 60,000
km or as inspected. Timing Belt Replacement: CRITICAL. This is a
non-interference engine.
Replace the timing belt, tensioner, and water pump every 90,000 km
(56,000 miles) or 5 years as preventative maintenance. Spark Plug
Replacement: Standard nickel-copper plugs every 30,000 km (18,600
miles). Platinum plugs can extend the interval to 60,000 km. Coolant
