General Technical Data
The Nissan CD20T engine is a 2.0-liter inline-four turbocharged diesel engine developed as part of Nissan’s CD-series of compact and mid-size diesel powerplants. Introduced during the 1990s, it served in a variety of passenger cars, MPVs, and light commercial vehicles. The CD20T was engineered to provide an optimal blend of fuel economy, low emissions, strong mid-range torque, and long-term durability.
Its compact design, swirl-chamber
indirect-injection layout, turbocharging system, and electronically
influenced mechanical fuel-injection pump positioned it between fully
mechanical diesel engines and the more advanced direct-injection diesels
that followed. The CD20T earned a reputation for longevity, reliability
under continuous load, and versatility, often powering vehicles in
regions where robust engineering and low maintenance costs were
essential.
The CD20T improved upon the naturally aspirated CD20 by adding a small
turbocharger to enhance performance while retaining the smooth, quiet
characteristics typical of IDI engines. This allowed the engine to
deliver better acceleration and hill-climbing capability without
compromising fuel efficiency. It became a widely deployed engine in the
Nissan Serena, AD Van, Avenir, Primera diesel variants, and other
platform derivatives. Mechanics value the CD20T for its simplicity,
stable thermal behavior, and long service intervals, making it a popular
diesel power unit through the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The Nissan CD20T is a water-cooled, inline-four, indirect-injection
(IDI), turbocharged diesel engine with a total displacement of 1973 cc,
or approximately 120.4 cubic inches. The bore diameter is 84.5 mm (3.33
inches), and the stroke is 88.0 mm (3.46 inches), giving a moderately
undersquare configuration designed for stronger low-rpm torque and
better thermal efficiency. The compression ratio varies depending on
version, generally around 22.0:1.
Maximum power output typically ranges from 90
to 100 horsepower (67 to 75 kW) at approximately 4400 rpm. Maximum
torque output ranges from 190 to 210 Nm (140 to 155 lb-ft) at about 2400
rpm, providing strong mid-range performance ideal for MPVs and compact
commercial vehicles. The firing order is 1-3-4-2. Idle speed is normally
around 750 to 850 rpm, and the governor-limited maximum engine speed is
approximately 5000 rpm.
The engine block is cast iron, providing rigidity and resistance to
thermal distortion during continuous load operation. Four inline
cylinders are bored directly into the block. The crankshaft is forged
steel and supported by five main bearings, ensuring smooth rotation and
reduced vibration. Connecting rods are forged steel and utilize
full-floating wrist pins. Pistons are aluminum alloy with reinforced
crowns, steel expansion struts, and combustion bowls optimized for the
IDI swirl-chamber system. Piston rings include two compression rings and
one oil-control ring.
The CD20T’s bottom end design is conservative but extremely durable,
able to withstand extended highway cruising, high-load operation, and
elevated combustion temperatures produced by turbocharging without
premature wear. The crankshaft pulley contains timing reference marks
used for setting injection pump timing.
The cylinder head is cast iron and contains four pre-combustion
chambers, one per cylinder. These chambers promote efficient swirl and
mixture homogenization. The head incorporates two valves per cylinder,
one intake and one exhaust, totaling eight valves. The valvetrain uses
an overhead-valve (OHV) layout with the camshaft located inside the
block and acting on pushrods and rocker arms. This configuration favors
mechanical simplicity, long-term reliability, and straightforward
serviceability.
Valve clearances are adjusted manually because hydraulic lash adjusters
are not used. Typical cold valve clearances are 0.30 mm (0.012 inches)
for intake valves and 0.35 mm (0.014 inches) for exhaust valves. The
head gasket is multi-layer metal and designed to withstand high
compression forces typical of diesel engines. The swirl-chamber IDI
design reduces diesel knock and contributes to the CD20T’s smoother,
quieter running compared to early direct-injection units.
Fuel System
The CD20T uses an indirect-injection diesel fuel system with a
mechanically controlled rotary-type injection pump. In later models,
electronic advance control is integrated into the pump for improved
emissions and drivability. A cam-driven mechanical lift pump draws fuel
through a primary water separator and a secondary fine fuel filter. Fuel
is metered and pressurized by the injection pump, which then feeds
high-pressure lines leading to pintle-type injectors installed in each
pre-chamber.
Injection pressures average around 120 Mpa (17,400 psi). Injection
timing is set mechanically and requires periodic inspection. Glow plugs
installed in each pre-chamber assist cold starting. Swirl-chamber IDI
combustion yields smooth operation and reduced particulate emissions but
results in slightly higher fuel consumption compared with
direct-injection diesels.
Standard fuel consumption ranges from 6.0 to 7.0 liters per 100 km (33
to 39 mpg), depending on vehicle size and driving conditions.
Lubrication System
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized wet-sump design. A
crankshaft-driven gear-type oil pump circulates oil through a strainer
and full-flow spin-on filter before distributing it to the crankshaft
bearings, connecting rod journals, camshaft bearings, rocker arms, and
turbocharger bearings. Oil jets under each piston spray oil onto the
piston crowns to reduce temperatures during boosted operation.
Oil capacity with filter is approximately 4.7 liters (5.0 US quarts, 4.1
imperial quarts). Recommended oil viscosity is SAE 10W-30 or 15W-40
diesel-rated oil meeting API CF or higher. Oil pressure at 3000 rpm
generally ranges between 350 and 450 kPa (50 to 65 psi). Idle pressure
remains above 70 kPa (10 psi). Regular oil changes are essential for
turbocharger longevity.
Cooling System
The CD20T employs a liquid-cooling system using a belt-driven
centrifugal water pump. Coolant circulates through the engine block,
cylinder head, radiator, and heater core. Thermostat opening temperature
is approximately 82°C (180°F), with full opening near 95°C (203°F).
Cooling system capacity is around 7.0 liters (7.4 US quarts). The
radiator is cross-flow aluminum, typically with an electric fan
controlled by a thermal switch or ECU.
Coolant replacement is recommended every 40,000 km (25,000 miles) or two
years. The cooling system must be kept in excellent condition to prevent
overheating, particularly under turbocharged load.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The induction system includes a dry-type paper air filter, air duct,
turbocharger inlet, and aluminum intake manifold. The exhaust manifold
is cast iron and mounts the turbocharger directly. Exhaust gases route
through the turbine housing before entering the downpipe and catalytic
converter (market-dependent).
The exhaust system includes an oxygen sensor on some versions for
rudimentary emissions control. The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation)
system reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by recirculating a controlled
amount of exhaust gas to the intake manifold.
Electrical and Starting Systems
As a diesel engine, the CD20T does not use spark ignition. Instead,
compression pressure ignites the fuel-air mixture. Glow plugs,
controlled by a timer relay, preheat the pre-combustion chambers for 5
to 10 seconds depending on ambient temperature.
The starter motor is a high-torque reduction-gear unit. The alternator
typically produces between 60 and 80 amperes. The engine operates on a
12-volt electrical system. Sensors include coolant temperature, oil
pressure, glow plug circuit, and (on some models) boost pressure and EGR
control.
Turbocharging System
A compact turbocharger improves power output and torque characteristics. Boost pressure is relatively modest, generally between 0.55 and 0.65 bar (8 to 9.5 psi), emphasizing torque delivery and drivability rather than high peak output.
The turbocharger is oil-lubricated from the main lubrication circuit and
requires timely oil changes for longevity. No intercooler is used on
most variants, although certain versions include a small top-mount or
side-mount intercooler to reduce intake air temperatures and improve
efficiency.
The wastegate is pneumatically actuated, limiting boost to the designed
level. The turbo system improves acceleration, towing capability, and
hill-climbing performance in MPVs and wagons.
Dimensions and Weight
The CD20T engine assembly measures approximately 700 mm (27.6 inches) in length, 620 mm (24.4 inches) in width, and 740 mm (29.1 inches) in height. Dry weight is around 165 to 175 kg (364 to 386 lbs), depending on turbocharger configuration and accessories. Its compact and robust design makes it suitable for transverse and longitudinal installations.
Maintenance Data
Oil and filter should be changed every 5000 to 7500 km (3000 to 4500 miles). Fuel filter replacement is essential for injector and pump health and should occur every 20,000 km (12,000 miles). Air filter replacement every 20,000 km. Glow plugs should be inspected annually or as needed. Valve lash adjustment every 20,000 km.
