The Nissan HR16DE is a 1.6-liter inline-four,
dual-overhead-camshaft (DOHC), naturally aspirated gasoline engine
belonging to Nissan’s modern HR-series, which includes HR12, HR15, and
HR16 variants. Introduced in the mid-2000s, the HR16DE replaced older
1.6-liter engines such as the QG16DE, delivering better efficiency,
improved emissions performance, enhanced drivability, and reduced
friction. It is widely used in compact sedans, hatchbacks, crossovers,
and light SUVs including the Nissan Tiida/Versa, Juke (non-turbo trims),
Note, Sylphy, Micra (regional versions), and several Renault and Dacia
models.
The HR16DE is engineered for reliability, efficiency, and smooth driving
characteristics. Its aluminum construction, roller rocker arms,
continuously variable valve timing (CVTC), multi-point fuel injection,
low-friction pistons, and optimized combustion chamber allow it to
deliver strong low-end torque and excellent fuel economy.
The HR16DE also integrates modern
emissions-control strategies, long-life components, and
noise/vibration/harshness (NVH) reduction technologies. It is designed
to be durable and capable of high mileage with minimal issues, making it
a popular choice for fleet and taxi applications.
The HR16DE is a four-stroke, inline-four gasoline engine with a
displacement of 1598 cc, equivalent to 97.5 cubic inches. Bore is
approximately 78.0 mm (3.07 inches), and stroke is 83.6 mm (3.29
inches), resulting in a slightly undersquare configuration that
prioritizes torque and fuel efficiency. Compression ratio varies by
market, typically ranging between 9.8:1 and 10.7:1.
Power output typically ranges from 109 to 118 horsepower (81 to 88 kW)
at 6000 rpm depending on market tuning, emissions requirements, and
model year. Maximum torque output usually ranges between 150 and 158 Nm
(111 to 116 lb-ft) at approximately 4000 rpm. Idle speed is generally
controlled at 700–750 rpm. The firing order is 1-3-4-2.
The crankshaft is a forged-steel, fully counterweighted unit supported
by five main bearings. Connecting rods are fracture-split steel for
precise cap alignment and excellent structural rigidity. Pistons are
lightweight aluminum with molybdenum-coated skirts to reduce friction.
The piston rings use low-friction coatings, and the piston crown shape
is engineered for efficient air–fuel mixture formation.
The HR16DE uses an aluminum DOHC cylinder head with four valves per
cylinder for a total of 16 valves. Intake and exhaust valves are
actuated via roller rocker arms with hydraulic lash adjusters, reducing
maintenance and enhancing valvetrain efficiency. Roller rockers decrease
friction, improving both fuel economy and responsiveness.
Intake valve diameter typically ranges from 31 to 33 mm (1.22 to 1.30
inches), while exhaust valves average 25 to 27 mm (0.98 to 1.06 inches).
The combustion chambers are engineered with high-swirl characteristics
to promote efficient mixture formation.
The intake camshaft features Nissan’s CVTC (Continuously Variable Timing
Control), which adjusts valve timing based on load, rpm, and
temperature. Some HR16DE versions include CVTC on the exhaust camshaft
as well, improving torque distribution, emissions performance, and
high-rpm breathing. Timing is driven by a roller-type timing chain
designed for extended service life. The chain tensioner is hydraulically
actuated using engine oil pressure.
The HR16DE uses electronic sequential multi-point fuel injection (MPI).
A high-capacity electric fuel pump located within the fuel tank supplies
fuel to the fuel rail at approximately 300 kPa (43 psi). Each cylinder
receives precisely metered fuel from an electronically controlled
injector.
The engine control module (ECM) uses data
from various sensors to determine fueling strategy, including:
- Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
- Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) or throttle-body position sensing
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
- Crankshaft position sensor
- Camshaft position sensor
- Oxygen sensor(s) for closed-loop control
- Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor on some variants
ECM-controlled adaptive fuel trimming ensures optimal mixture control
for efficiency, emissions, and performance. Some versions use a
returnless fuel system for reduced evaporative emissions.
The HR16DE incorporates a full-pressure lubrication system using a
trochoid-type oil pump mounted at the front of the block and driven by
the crankshaft. Pressurized oil is delivered to the crankshaft bearings,
connecting rod journals, camshaft journals, rocker arms, and timing
chain assembly.
Oil also lubricates the CVTC mechanism and hydraulic lash adjusters. The
lubrication system uses a full-flow replaceable spin-on oil filter. Oil
capacity typically ranges from 3.2 to 3.7 liters (3.4 to 3.9 U.S.
quarts). Recommended viscosity is typically SAE 0W-20 or 5W-30 depending
on market.
Oil pressure values:
- 3000 rpm: 350–450 kPa (50–65 psi)
- Idle: above 70 kPa (10 psi)
The HR16DE uses a liquid-cooled system
featuring:
- A belt-driven centrifugal water pump
- Cross-flow aluminum radiator
- Thermostat opening at approximately 82°C (180°F)
- Electric cooling fan controlled by the ECM
- Coolant passages designed for rapid warm-up
- Optional oil-to-water cooler on some variants
Coolant capacity is typically 5.0 to 5.5 liters (5.3 to 5.8 U.S.
quarts). Proper coolant maintenance is critical to prevent overheating
and maintain emissions control catalyst durability.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
The induction system includes:
- Plastic air ducting and resonator chambers
- High-flow dry-paper air filter
- Mass air flow sensor
- Composite intake manifold designed for broad torque delivery
- Electronic throttle body (drive-by-wire)
The exhaust system consists of:
- Integrated exhaust manifold (in some versions)
- Close-coupled catalytic converter
- Downstream catalytic converter
- Oxygen sensors (primary and secondary)
- Resonator and high-capacity muffler
This configuration supports rapid catalyst warm-up and low emissions
output.
| Ignition and Electrical System |
The HR16DE uses coil-on-plug (COP) ignition. Each cylinder has an
individual ignition coil mounted directly above the spark plug. This
design improves spark accuracy and reduces electrical losses.
Spark plug specifications:
- Type: Iridium

- Replacement interval: 60,000–100,000 km (37,000–62,000 miles)
A 12-volt electrical system powers the engine’s sensors, ECM, ignition
coils, fuel injectors, and emission control systems. Alternator output
varies from 80 to 110 amperes depending on configuration.
The HR16DE includes multiple auxiliary
systems:
