The cylinder block is a single-piece, high-strength gray iron casting
employing a deep-skirt design. This construction provides a rigid
foundation that minimizes flex and vibration, ensuring precise alignment
of main bearing bores and camshaft journals under continuous load. The
block incorporates replaceable, press-fit wet-type cylinder sleeves.
These sleeves are manufactured from centrifugally cast alloy iron,
selected for high wear resistance and effective heat transfer to the
coolant jacket.
The crankshaft is supported by seven main bearings with steel-backed,
aluminum alloy bearing inserts. Main bearing caps are nodular iron,
secured with two vertical bolts each. The block features an integrated
front gear train housing and comprehensive internal passages for
lubricating oil and coolant distribution, promoting even temperatures
and reliable lubrication to all critical areas.
The cylinder head is a single-piece, cast iron component with a
crossflow port design. It accommodates four valves per cylinder: two
intake and two exhaust. This four-valve configuration optimizes airflow
into and out of the combustion chamber, supporting efficient combustion
and effective heat management. Valve seats are induction-hardened
inserts. Valve guides are replaceable.
Intake and exhaust valves are produced from heat-resistant steel alloys,
engineered to maintain integrity under sustained high-temperature
operation. Valve actuation is via individual, shaft-mounted rocker arms.
Valve lash is adjusted manually using screw-type adjusters on the rocker
arms, a design that permits precise maintenance adjustments. The
camshaft, situated in the cylinder block, operates the valves through
solid lifters and pushrods. A multilayer steel head gasket provides the
seal between the cylinder head and block.
The fuel system is a direct injection, pump-line-nozzle configuration
with a mechanical governor. A gear-driven transfer pump supplies fuel
from the tank through a primary filter with a water separator and a
secondary spin-on fuel filter. The injection pump is an in-line,
plunger-type unit (such as a John Deere or Robert Bosch model) equipped
with an integral mechanical, isochronous governor.
This governor maintains a constant engine speed irrespective of load
variation, a fundamental requirement for stable generator frequency
output. Separate high-pressure steel lines connect each outlet of the
injection pump to its corresponding injector. The injectors are
multi-hole, pencil-type units that atomize fuel directly into the
combustion chamber. An electric solenoid valve, activated by the control
system, provides positive fuel shutoff.
The lubrication system is a full-pressure, gear-driven design. A
gear-type oil pump, driven from the crankshaft gear train, draws oil
from the oil pan through a pickup tube and screen. Pressurized oil is
directed through a full-flow, spin-on oil filter. An oil cooler,
integral to the engine's cooling circuit, maintains optimal oil
temperature. Filtered and cooled oil is distributed via main galleries
to the crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft
bearings, and the valve rocker shaft.
A dedicated piston cooling jet sprays oil onto the underside of each
piston crown for additional cooling. The turbocharger center bearing is
lubricated via a dedicated feed line, with drain oil returning to the
sump. A pressure relief valve within the pump housing maintains
specified system pressure. Total engine oil system capacity is 21.5
liters (5.7 U.S. gallons). Oil meeting John Deere performance standard
JDM J27 or API classification CH-4/CG-4 is required.
The cooling system is a pressurized, liquid-cooled, pump-circulated
design. A centrifugal water pump, gear-driven from the front of the
engine, circulates coolant. Coolant flow is directed first through the
cylinder block, around the wet sleeves, then upward into the cylinder
head, and subsequently through the oil cooler and aftercooler core
before returning to the radiator. A wax-pellet-type thermostat regulates
engine operating temperature.
System pressure is maintained by a radiator pressure cap, commonly rated
for 100 kPa (15 psi). Airflow across the radiator and aftercooler is
provided by a belt-driven fan mounted on the engine. The total engine
jacket coolant capacity is 25.8 liters (6.8 U.S. gallons). A 50/50
mixture of ethylene-glycol antifreeze meeting John Deere specification
JDM J71C and demineralized water is specified for corrosion inhibition
and freeze protection.
Air Management System: The system incorporates a wastegated turbocharger
and an air-to-air aftercooler. The aftercooler reduces the temperature
of the compressed intake air, increasing its density to allow more fuel
to be burned efficiently, thereby enhancing power output and lowering
thermal loading.
Electrical System: The engine employs a 12-volt or 24-volt electric
starting system with a high-torque starter motor. A 12-volt or 24-volt
alternator provides charging current for the engine's battery system. An
intake air heater grid, controlled by a timer or the generator control
module, assists in cold-weather starting.
Exhaust System: Exhaust gases exit the cylinder head into a cast iron
manifold, drive the turbocharger turbine, and are then directed to the
exhaust outlet. Mounting and Coupling: The engine is configured with a
generator set base frame incorporating vibration isolators. It features
an SAE flywheel housing designed for direct coupling to a synchronous
alternator.
Overall Length (Front of fan to flywheel housing face): 1116 mm (43.9
inches).
Overall Width (Maximum at mounting rails): 623 mm (24.5 inches).
Overall Height (Top of valve cover to base of mounting rails): 1012 mm
(39.8 inches).
Dry Weight (Engine as packaged for genset duty, less coolant and oil):
569 kg (1254 lbs).
Engine Oil Change Interval: 500 service hours or annually, whichever
occurs first. Severe service conditions may necessitate 250-hour
intervals. Oil Filter Change: Replace with every oil change. Fuel Filter
Service: Drain water from the primary separator daily; replace primary
and secondary filter elements every 500 service hours.
Air Filter Element Service: Replace the element based on restriction
gauge indication; inspect the housing every 250 service hours. Coolant
Change Interval: 3000 service hours or 3 years. Valve Lash Adjustment
(Cold Engine Setting): Intake valve: 0.35 mm (0.014 inches); Exhaust

Verify and set per factory specification during major overhaul or pump
service. Aftercooler Core Service: Inspect and clean the external fins
of the aftercooler core every 1000 service hours to maintain heat
exchange efficiency. Fan Drive Belt Tension: Adjust to provide 13 mm
(0.5 inches) of deflection at the belt's longest span under moderate
thumb pressure.

lb-ft), then final angle tighten an additional 90 deg. Main Bearing Cap
Bolts: 190 Nm (140 lb-ft).
Connecting Rod Cap Nuts: 115 Nm (85 lb-ft), then final tighten an
additional 60-degree turn.
Flywheel to Crankshaft Bolts: 160 Nm (118 lb-ft).
Rocker Arm Shaft Support Bolts: 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
