The Yanmar 3JH2-TE is a 1.5-liter,
turbocharged, in-line 3-cylinder marine diesel engine produced by Yanmar
from approximately 1991 into the early 2000s. This engine belongs to the
3JH2 series, which includes the naturally aspirated 3JH2E and the
turbocharged 3JH2-TE. The "TE" designation indicates Turbocharged and
specifically refers to the engine variant designed for sailboats, small
fishing vessels, workboats, and pleasure craft.
The Yanmar 3JH2-TE is a 4-stroke, water-cooled, vertical diesel engine
with indirect injection (swirl pre-combustion chamber) for smoother
operation. The engine features a compact and lightweight design, high
torque at low engine speeds, low noise and vibration, and outstanding
fuel efficiency. The robust build and simple design make the engine
highly durable and easy to maintain. The 3JH2-TE is widely recognized
for its high power-to-weight ratio in marine applications. The engine is
typically paired with a KM3A or KM3P series mechanical cone clutch
marine gear.
The Yanmar 3JH2-TE is a 4-stroke, vertical in-line 3-cylinder diesel
engine. The engine is turbocharged. Total displacement measures 1,363 cc
(83.2 cu.in). The bore and stroke dimensions are 82.0 mm x 86.0 mm (3.23
in x 3.39 in). The long-stroke configuration promotes high low-speed
torque, a critical attribute for marine propulsion. The compression
ratio is 18.1:1. The firing order is 1-3-2. Engine rotation, when viewed
from the stern (flywheel end), is counter-clockwise.
Maximum Output (One Hour Rating, DIN6270B): 33.5 kW (45 hp) @ 3,600 rpm
Continuous Output (Continuous Rating, DIN6270A): 30.2 kW (41 hp) @ 3,400
rpm
Low Idle Speed: 650-750 rpm
Aspiration: Turbocharged
Combustion System: Indirect injection (swirl pre-combustion chamber)
Governor Type: Mechanical, centrifugal
The cylinder block is a one-piece, cast iron design. This material
provides excellent heat dissipation and resistance to mechanical stress
under continuous marine load conditions. The block features a deep-skirt
configuration. The cylinders are parent bores without replaceable
liners.
The crankshaft is forged or cast steel, supported by four main bearings.
Connecting rods are forged steel. The pistons are cast aluminum alloy
with three rings: two compression rings and one oil control ring. A
piston cooling nozzle is provided for each cylinder to spray oil on the
underside of the piston crown. A flywheel housing is mounted at the rear
of the block.
Number of Cylinders: 3
Number of Main Bearings: 4
Crankshaft Rotation (viewed from stern): Counter-clockwise
The cylinder head is a single, cast iron casting spanning all 3
cylinders. The head incorporates pre-combustion chambers (swirl
chambers) for each cylinder. The overhead valve (OHV) valvetrain uses a
camshaft located in the cylinder block. Camshaft drive is by a timing
gear train. The camshaft actuates valves via tappets, pushrods, and
rocker arms. This cam-in-block arrangement is durable and allows easy
valve lash adjustment.
Each cylinder has two valves: one intake and one exhaust (6 valves
total). Valve lash adjustment is mechanical, performed via a setscrew
and locknut on each rocker arm. The cylinder head contains valve seat
inserts and valve guides.
Valve Arrangement: Overhead valve (OHV), cam-in-block, 2 valves per
cylinder
Valve Lash (cold, intake): 0.20 mm (0.008 in)
Valve Lash (cold, exhaust): 0.20 mm (0.008 in)
Valve Lash Adjustment Interval: 500-600 hours
The fuel system uses mechanical indirect injection. A mechanical feed
pump draws fuel from the tank and supplies it to the injection pump. The
injection pump is an in-line, mechanical unit (Yanmar PES-CL type) with
a separate pumping plunger for each cylinder. The pump incorporates a
mechanical centrifugal governor that maintains set engine speed
regardless of load. An automatic cold start device on the injection pump
advances injection timing for improved starting.
The injection pump delivers fuel at high pressure through individual
high-pressure lines to each injector. The injectors are mechanical
nozzle-and-holder types with hole-type (multi-orifice) nozzles,
injecting into the pre-combustion chamber. A fuel filter is installed on
the engine, and a manual primer pump is located on the fuel filter
housing for bleeding air after filter changes.
Injection Pressure: 19.6 MPa (200 kgf/cm2)
Injection Timing (static): 19° ±1° BTDC
Injector Type: Mechanical, hole-type (multi-orifice)
Governor Type: Mechanical, variable speed
Fuel Filtration: Single spin-on filter
Fuel Grade: EN 590 diesel (marine gas oil)
The lubrication system is a full-pressure, wet-sump design using a
trochoid-type oil pump. The oil pump is mounted externally on the
cylinder block and driven by a gear from the camshaft. Oil is drawn from
the sump through a wire mesh strainer, pressurized by the pump, and then
routed through a full-flow oil filter (spin-on, cellulose media). A
bypass valve opens at differential pressure if the filter becomes
restricted.
After filtration, oil is distributed to the main bearings, connecting
rod bearings, camshaft bearings, rocker arm shaft, and the piston
cooling nozzles. The engine is equipped with a water-cooled oil cooler
(lube oil cooler) mounted on the side of the block, using engine
freshwater as the cooling medium. The oil pan is a fabricated steel or
cast aluminum sump.
Oil Capacity (total, including filter and cooler): 5.0 L (5.3 U.S. qt)
Oil Pressure (rated speed): 300-450 kPa (43-65 psi)
Oil Pressure (low idle, hot): 100 kPa (15 psi) minimum
Recommended Oil Viscosity: SAE 10W-30 or 15W-40 (API CD, CE, or CF
rating)
Oil Change Interval (normal duty): 150 hours
Oil Pan Type: Stamped steel or cast aluminum
The cooling system is a thermostat-controlled freshwater (closed)
cooling system with a seawater circuit for heat rejection. The engine
has two separate cooling circuits: a freshwater circuit circulating
coolant through the engine block and cylinder head; and a seawater
circuit drawn from the surrounding water, which passes through the heat
exchanger, oil cooler, and mixing elbow before being discharged
overboard.
The freshwater circuit uses a centrifugal fresh water pump
(belt-driven). Coolant flows from the pump into the cylinder block,
upward through the cylinder head, and then to the heat exchanger. The
heat exchanger is a shell-and-tube type mounted on the engine, with
seawater circulating inside the tubes and freshwater around them.
An external coolant recovery tank (sub tank) is connected to the heat
exchanger pressure cap. The seawater circuit uses a flexible rubber
impeller-type sea water pump. The wax-pellet thermostat begins opening
at 71-77°C (160-170°F) and is fully open at 85°C (185°F). A bypass
passage permits coolant circulation through the block until the
thermostat opens.
Coolant Capacity (freshwater, engine and heat exchanger): 5.5 L (5.8
U.S. qt)
Seawater Pump Type: Flexible impeller pump (rubber impeller,
replaceable)
Impeller Replacement Interval: Annually or 200 hours
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 71-77°C (160-170°F)
Heat Exchanger Type: Shell-and-tube, seawater-cooled
Coolant Type: Heavy-duty diesel ethylene glycol antifreeze mixed 50/50
with distilled water
The electrical system is 12-volt with negative ground. The starter motor
is a pre-engaged type with an integral solenoid, rated at 1.4 kW. The
alternator is a 12-volt, internally regulated unit with an output of 55
A or 80 A depending on the option. The battery is a lead-acid, marine
starting type with a capacity of 80-100 Ah. The engine is equipped with
an air heater for cold starting assistance on some variants. An
instrument panel with tachometer, coolant temperature gauge, oil
pressure gauge, voltmeter, and warning lamps is installed at the helm.
Turbocharging System: The engine is equipped with a single,
fixed-geometry turbocharger mounted on the exhaust manifold. Boost
pressure at rated speed is not specified in search results. The
turbocharger uses engine oil for lubrication and cooling through
dedicated supply and return lines. The engine has no aftercooler.
Exhaust System: The exhaust manifold is a cast iron design. A
water-cooled mixing elbow is mounted at the turbocharger outlet.
Seawater is injected into the mixing elbow to cool exhaust gases before
they exit through the exhaust hose and transom outlet.
