The Mazda L8-DE is a 1.8-liter,
inline-four-cylinder, dual overhead camshaft (DOHC), 16-valve gasoline
engine. It is a member of Mazda's L-series engine family, which served
as a cornerstone for many of their compact and mid-size vehicles from
the late 1990s through the 2000s. The "DE" suffix denotes a
standard-output, mass-market variant focused on balance, reliability,
fuel efficiency, and low emissions. As a modern, all-aluminum engine, it
features Mazda's Sequential Valve Timing (S-VT) on the intake camshaft
and a coil-on-plug ignition system.
Designed primarily for transverse front-wheel-drive applications, the
L8-DE is characterized by its smooth and linear power delivery, quiet
operation, and excellent durability with routine maintenance. It is not
a high-performance unit but is revered as a workhorse engine that
powered millions of vehicles globally, offering a practical and
dependable driving experience. It shares much of its architecture with
the larger 2.0L and 2.3L MZR engines, benefiting from their refined
design.

Overhead Camshafts (DOHC), driven by a silent timing chain. Four valves
per cylinder (16-valve total).
Valve Technology: Intake camshaft equipped with Mazda's S-VT (Sequential
Valve Timing). This hydraulically actuated, electronically controlled
system varies intake cam timing continuously for optimized power,
torque, and emissions across the RPM range.

direct-acting buckets. No periodic mechanical adjustment is required or
provided for. Valve train noise can indicate oil supply issues or worn
HLA units. Camshaft Drive: Silent-type timing chain with a hydraulic
automatic tensioner and a mechanical guide system. Designed for the life
of the engine with proper lubrication.

factory-recommended grade for optimal fuel economy and cold-start
protection. SAE 5W-30 is also widely accepted and used. Operating Oil
Pressure: At normal operating temperature: 275-420 kPa (2.8-4.3 kgf/cm2
/ 40-61 psi) at 3,000 rpm. Minimum idle pressure: 69 kPa (0.7 kgf/cm2 /
10 psi).

conditions): 5,000 km (3,100 miles). Spark Plugs: Replace with
recommended long-life plugs every 120,000 km (75,000 miles) under normal
conditions. Inspect during major services. Timing Chain: Designed as a
lifetime component. No scheduled replacement interval. The hydraulic
tensioner and chain guides are durable but should be inspected if
unusual timing-related noise (high-pitched rattle on startup or under
load) occurs, after 200,000+ km.
Accessory Drive Belt (Serpentine Belt): Inspect every oil change for
cracks, glazing, or fraying. Replace every 80,000-100,000 km
(50,000-62,000 miles). Coolant Replacement: Replace with FL-22 coolant
every 10 years or 200,000 km (124,000 miles), whichever comes first.
This is a long-life coolant specific to Mazda. Fuel Filter: Often part
of the in-tank fuel pump module. Service interval is 120,000 km (75,000
miles) or as needed. Air Filter: Inspect every 30,000 km (18,600 miles).
Replace every 60,000 km (37,000 miles) or more often in dusty
environments. Cabin Air Filter: Replace every 40,000 km (25,000 miles)

The Mazda L8-DE engine saw widespread use in various Mazda and Ford
compact vehicles globally from the early 2000s to around 2010: Mazda 323
/ Protege (BJ Series): Standard engine in many markets for higher trim
levels (e.g., 1.8L models). Mazda 3 (BK Series, First Generation): The
base engine for many international markets (excluding North America,
which used the 2.0L and 2.3L). Powered numerous sedan and hatchback
models.
Mazda MX-5 / Miata (NB Series): Used in some European and other
non-US/JP markets as the base 1.8L engine, though it is a different,
longitudinally mounted variant. Ford Focus (First Generation,
international markets): Used extensively in the European and Asian Ford
Focus (pre-2005) as the 1.8L Zetec engine, a product of the Mazda-Ford
alliance. This is a closely related, and often identical, variant. Ford
Escort (China and other markets): Used in later models of the Ford
Escort in various global markets. Mazda Premacy (First Generation): The
compact MPV was offered with the L8-DE engine option.
