The Nissan MR18DE engine is a 1.8-liter,
inline-four, water-cooled, four-stroke gasoline engine developed as part
of Nissan’s MR-series. It was engineered to deliver a balance of smooth
operation, fuel efficiency, predictable mid-range torque, and long-term
reliability. Introduced in the mid-2000s, the MR18DE powered compact and
mid-size Nissan passenger vehicles such as the Note, Tiida/Versa,
Wingroad, Latio, and Bluebird Sylphy.
Designed to replace earlier QG-series engines, the MR18DE incorporates
an aluminum block and head, DOHC architecture, four valves per cylinder,
continuously variable valve timing on the intake camshaft, a
timing-chain-driven valvetrain, and multi-point electronic fuel
injection.
The MR18DE prioritizes real-world drivability and low maintenance cost.
It is known for smooth acceleration, good low-end response, and the
ability to withstand high mileage when serviced regularly. Its
low-friction internals, lightweight rotating components, and efficient
combustion design produce a refined engine character well suited to
daily use. Although not intended as a high-performance powerplant, the
MR18DE is respected for stable long-term operation and dependable
service.
The MR18DE engine displaces approx. 1,798 cc (109.7 cubic inches). Bore
is approx. 84.0 mm (3.31 inches), and stroke is approx. 81.1 mm (3.19
inches). The engine uses a near-square configuration to balance torque
and revving ability. Compression ratio is 9.9:1 - 10.2:1 depending on
regional calibration.
Maximum factory power output is approx. 125-130 hp at approx.
5,200-6,000 rpm. Maximum torque is approx. 125-131 lb-ft (170-178 Nm) at
approx. 3,600-4,000 rpm. Idle speed is approx. 700-750 rpm. The firing
order is 1-3-4-2. Redline is generally approx. 6,500-6,700 rpm depending
on the ECU tune.
The engine block is aluminum with cast-in iron liners that resist wear.
The crankshaft is forged steel supported by five main bearings. Pistons
are aluminum alloy with low-friction coatings, and connecting rods are
forged steel with full-floating wrist pins. The rotating assembly is
balanced to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness.
The MR18DE uses an aluminum DOHC cylinder
head with:
- Dual overhead camshafts
- Timing-chain-driven valvetrain
- Four valves per cylinder
- Roller rocker arms
- Hydraulic valve lash adjusters
- Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control (CVTC) on the intake cam
The combustion chamber is compact, shaped to promote efficient swirl and
mixture homogenization. The intake ports are designed for high airflow
velocity at low and mid rpm. The CVTC system advances or retards intake
cam timing depending on engine load and rpm, enabling improved fuel
economy, torque, and emissions behavior.
The MR18DE features a multi-point electronic fuel-injection (MPFI)
system.
Components include:
- In-tank electric fuel pump
- High-pressure fuel rail
- Multi-hole injectors
- Electronic throttle body
- Mass-airflow (MAF) sensor
- Engine Control Module (ECM)
- Returnless fuel system on most variants
Fuel pressure generally operates around 51-58 psi depending on system
design.
The ECM controls fuel delivery using data
from:
- Oxygen sensors (pre- and post-catalyst)
- Crankshaft position sensor
- Camshaft position sensor
- Throttle-position sensor
- Coolant-temperature sensor
- Intake-air-temperature sensor
The MR18DE uses a full-pressure wet-sump lubrication system.
Specifications:
- Oil capacity: approx. 3.8-4.2 liters (4.0-4.4 US qt)
- Oil pressure: approx. 45-65 psi at 3,000 rpm; approx. 15-20 psi idle
- Recommended oil: 5W-30 or 0W-20 synthetic depending on climate
Lubrication is provided by a crankshaft-driven trochoid oil pump. Oil
circulates to crankshaft bearings, connecting-rod bearings, camshaft
journals, timing-chain components, and valvetrain. A spin-on oil filter
provides primary filtration.
Cooling is managed by a forced-circulation liquid-cooled system.
Components include:
- Belt-driven water pump
- Aluminum-core radiator
- Thermostat
- Expansion tank
- Heater core
- Coolant temperature sensors
Specifications:
- Thermostat begins opening approx. 82°C (180°F)
- Fully open approx. 95°C (203°F)
- Cooling-system capacity approx. 6.0-6.5 liters (6.3-6.8 US qt)
The system maintains stable engine temperatures under varying ambient
and load conditions.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
The induction system includes:
- Air-cleaner assembly
- Replaceable paper air filter
- Intake snorkel
- MAF sensor
- Electronic throttle body
- Long-runner composite intake manifold
Long runner lengths improve mid-range torque output. The throttle is
ECM-controlled to provide smooth response and stability when paired with
CVT transmissions.
Exhaust components include:
- Cast or stainless-steel exhaust manifold
- Close-coupled catalytic converter
- Underfloor catalytic converter on some models
- Oxygen sensors (upstream and downstream)
- Muffler system
Exhaust layout supports emissions compliance without compromising
torque.
The ignition system is electronically controlled and employs
coil-on-plug (COP) modules.
System includes:
- Four individual ignition coils
- Platinum or iridium-tipped spark plugs
- Crankshaft angle sensor
- Camshaft angle sensor
- ECM-controlled spark timing
Spark-plug gap measures approx. 0.9-1.1 mm (0.035-0.043 inches). The ECM
continuously adjusts spark advance for detonation control and optimal
combustion.
- Length approx. 650-690 mm (25.6-27.2 inches)
- Width approx. 600-630 mm (23.6-24.8 inches)
- Height approx. 650-700 mm (25.6-27.6 inches)
Dry weight approx. 115-135 kg (253-298 lb) depending on accessories.
Recommended intervals:
- Oil and filter every 5,000-10,000 km (3,000-6,000 miles)
- Air filter every 20,000 km
- Spark plugs every 60,000-100,000 km
- Coolant every 2-3 years
- Drive-belt inspection every 20,000-30,000 km
- Fuel filter is non-serviceable (in-tank)
Compression pressure:
- Approx. 160-190 psi
- Cylinder variation less than 10 percent
Idle speed should remain approx. 700-750 rpm.
- Cylinder-head bolts: approx. 75-85 lb-ft (102-115 Nm)
- Main-bearing caps: approx. 55-65 lb-ft (75-88 Nm)
