The Nissan MR20DE engine is a 2.0-liter,
inline-four, four-stroke, water-cooled gasoline engine developed by
Nissan as part of the MR-series. Introduced in the mid-2000s, the MR20DE
was engineered to provide a modern balance of fuel efficiency, smooth
operation, and dependable performance.
It is widely used in compact and mid-size Nissan passenger cars,
crossovers, and MPVs, including the Nissan Sentra, Nissan Serena, Nissan
Qashqai, Nissan X-Trail, Nissan Bluebird Sylphy, and other global-market
models. The MR20DE features an aluminum block, aluminum DOHC cylinder
head, chain-driven camshafts, continuously variable valve timing,
multi-port electronic fuel injection, lightweight rotating components,
and high thermal efficiency design.
The engine’s development emphasized refinement, reduced internal
friction, and compatibility with continuously variable transmissions
(CVT). It provides reliable mid-range torque, low noise, and durable
construction capable of long service intervals.
Although not designed as a high-performance
engine, the MR20DE is recognized for long-term dependability and
reasonable operating costs. Modern engineering elements such as roller
cam followers, low-friction coatings, and optimized intake geometry
allow effective performance under a variety of driving conditions.
The displacement of the MR20DE engine is 1,997 cc (121.9 cubic inches).
Bore is 84.0 mm (3.31 inches) and stroke is 90.1 mm (3.55 inches). The
long-stroke layout supports strong low- and mid-range torque.
Compression ratio varies by market and tune, approx. 9.8:1 - 10.2:1.
Maximum output ranges approx. 137-150 hp at
approx. 5,100-6,000 rpm depending on calibration. Peak torque is approx.
141-147 lb-ft (191-200 Nm) at approx. 4,000 rpm. Idle speed is approx.
700-750 rpm. The firing order is 1-3-4-2. Redline varies slightly by
model but generally sits near 6,500-6,700 rpm.
The block is aluminum with cast-in iron cylinder liners to reduce weight
while maintaining durability. The forged-steel crankshaft rotates in
five main bearings. Pistons are cast aluminum with molybdenum-coated
skirts and low-friction rings.
Connecting rods are lightweight forged steel. The crankshaft and
reciprocating components are balanced to reduce noise and vibration,
contributing to smooth operation in passenger-vehicle applications.
The MR20DE uses an aluminum DOHC cylinder head with four valves per
cylinder.
The valvetrain includes:
- Double overhead camshafts
- Chain-driven timing system
- Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control (CVTC) on the intake
camshaft
- Roller cam followers
- Maintenance-free hydraulic lifters
The combustion chamber design promotes efficient burn characteristics
with proper swirl and tumble. The valve sizes and port geometry are
optimized for balanced torque delivery and fuel economy. Camshaft timing
control improves torque at low rpm, enhances throttle response, and
reduces emissions under different load conditions. Timing-chain
tensioners use engine oil pressure and a spring-loaded mechanism to
maintain accuracy.
The MR20DE uses multi-point electronic fuel injection (MPFI).
System components include:
- Electric in-tank fuel pump
- High-pressure fuel rail
- Multi-hole injectors
- Mass-airflow (MAF) sensor
- Throttle body with electronic throttle control
- Engine Control Module (ECM)
Fuel pressure operates around 50-60 psi depending on system design.
Injectors spray atomized fuel into the intake ports for efficient
mixing. Electronic throttle control ensures smooth torque delivery,
coordination with CVT systems, and improved emissions performance. Fuel
mixture is monitored and adjusted using oxygen sensors, coolant
temperature sensors, throttle sensors, and airflow metering.
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump design with a
crankshaft-driven oil pump.
Specifications:
- Oil capacity: approx. 4.2-4.4 liters (4.4-4.6 US qt)
- Recommended oil viscosity: 5W-30 synthetic (some markets 0W-20)
- Normal oil pressure: approx. 45-65 psi at 3,000 rpm; approx. 15-20 psi
at idle
The oil pump supplies lubrication to crankshaft journals, connecting-rod
bearings, camshaft journals, timing-chain components, and piston-cooling
oil jets. The MR20DE includes a cartridge-type oil filter. Routine oil
changes maintain timing-chain life and prevent sludge buildup.
The MR20DE uses a liquid cooling system with a belt-driven water pump,
thermostat, radiator, and electric cooling fans.
Specifications:
- Thermostat begins opening: approx. 82°C (180°F)
- Fully open: approx. 95°C (203°F)
- Cooling-system capacity: approx. 6.0-6.5 liters (6.3-6.8 US qt)
Coolant circulates through block and head passages, radiator, and heater
core. The system incorporates a pressurized expansion tank. The engine
is designed to operate efficiently at relatively high temperatures to
improve efficiency.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
The induction system includes:
- Air-filter housing
- Paper air-filter element
- Intake snorkel
- MAF sensor
- Electronic throttle body
- Plastic intake manifold
The intake manifold is tuned for broad torque delivery. Throttle body
operation is electronically controlled to optimize throttle response and
integration with transmission behavior.
The exhaust system includes:
- Stainless-steel exhaust header
- Close-coupled catalytic converter
- Rear underbody catalytic converter
- Oxygen sensors upstream and downstream
- Exhaust piping and muffler
Exhaust design reduces emissions and supports quick catalyst light-off.
The MR20DE uses a coil-on-plug ignition system controlled by the ECM.
Components include:
- Individual ignition coils (one per cylinder)
- Iridium or platinum-tipped spark plugs
- Crankshaft position sensor
- Camshaft position sensor
Spark timing is continuously adjusted according to load, knock sensor
feedback, coolant temperature, and engine speed. Spark-plug gap measures
approx. 0.9-1.1 mm (0.035-0.043 inches). The system is
maintenance-friendly and provides precise ignition control for fuel
efficiency.
