The International D436 is a heavy-duty, inline
six-cylinder diesel engine designed by International Harvester (later
International/Navistar) for use in agricultural tractors, industrial
machinery, and stationary power applications. As part of the large-bore
D-series family, the D436 shares its architecture with the D414 and D466
engines, but with a displacement of 7.1 liters (436 cubic inches), it
occupies a middle-ground position in the lineup. Known for durability,
excellent torque rise, and long service life under heavy loads, the D436
is commonly found in larger IH tractors such as the 1566, 1466 (later
models), and various industrial machines.
The engine features robust cast-iron construction, a fully mechanical
direct-injection fuel system, gear-driven components, and replaceable
wet cylinder sleeves, making it highly serviceable and rebuildable.
Operators appreciate its ability to deliver steady power during
continuous work such as plowing, heavy tillage, loader operation, and
industrial tasks. Many D436 engines remain in operation due to their
reliability and strong aftermarket parts availability.
The International D436 is a four-stroke, water-cooled, inline
six-cylinder diesel engine. Displacement is 7.1 liters (436 cubic
inches). Bore diameter is 108 mm (4.25 inches), and stroke length is 127
mm (5.00 inches). This long-stroke configuration provides excellent
low-end torque and efficient combustion at lower working RPMs.
Compression ratio varies depending on production year and specific
configuration but ranges between 16.0:1 and 17.0:1. Rated power output
commonly falls between 145 and 170 Hp (108-127 kW) at approximately
2,300 rpm. Peak torque usually ranges from 530 to 650 Nm (391-479 lb-ft)
at around 1,400-1,600 rpm. Idle speed is set between 650 and 750 rpm.
Maximum governed speed ranges from 2,300 to 2,500 rpm. Firing order is
1-5-3-6-2-4.
The crankshaft is a forged-steel, fully counterweighted design supported
by seven large main bearings for smooth operation under continuous load.
Pistons are cast-aluminum alloy with machined direct-injection
combustion bowls and reinforced crowns. Piston rings include two
compression rings and one oil-control ring. Connecting rods are forged
steel with replaceable bearing inserts. The camshaft is gear-driven and
located in the block, actuating valves through pushrods and rocker arms.
The D436 cylinder block is cast iron with thick walls to support high
combustion pressures and permit multiple rebuild cycles. The block
incorporates wet replaceable cylinder sleeves, allowing overhaul without
machining the parent bore. Coolant passages fully encircle the sleeves,
maintaining uniform cooling and preventing hot spots during extended
full-load operation.
The crankcase features a deep-skirt design and reinforced main-bearing
saddles to minimize vibration and ensure long-term structural integrity.
Accessory mounting points allow for installation of hydraulic pumps,
alternators, power-steering pumps, and industrial drive equipment.
The cylinder head is cast iron and features direct-injection combustion
chambers. Each cylinder contains two valves - one intake and one exhaust
- driven by rocker arms connected to pushrods and the gear-driven
camshaft. The head incorporates hardened valve seats for durability
under high thermal loads.
Cold valve-lash specifications:
- Intake: 0.30-0.35 mm (0.012-0.014 in)
- Exhaust: 0.35-0.40 mm (0.014-0.016 in)
Cylinder-head design emphasizes airflow efficiency, thermal stability,
and long sealing life when combined with a multilayer head gasket
featuring fire rings.
The D436 uses a fully mechanical direct-injection diesel fuel system. A
mechanical lift pump draws fuel from the tank, sending it through a
sediment bowl or water separator and then a fine paper-element fuel
filter. The high-pressure fuel injection pump is an inline mechanical
pump (Bosch-type or IH-sourced), delivering fuel precisely to each
cylinder through high-pressure fuel lines.
Injection pressures generally range from 250 to 350 bar. Mechanical
governors control both fuel quantity and engine speed. Injectors are
multi-hole types designed to atomize fuel efficiently within the piston
bowl.
Fuel system maintenance includes:
- Fuel filter replacement every 250-300 hours
- Water separator drainage as needed
- Injector servicing every 1,000-1,500 hours
- Injection timing checks during major service intervals
The lubrication system is a wet-sump, full-pressure design. A
gear-driven oil pump draws oil from the sump, passing it through a
full-flow oil filter before distributing it to bearings, camshaft
journals, rocker arms, and auxiliary systems. An optional bypass oil
filter may be present on some configurations.
Oil capacity ranges from 11 to 13 liters (11.6-13.7 US quarts).
Recommended oil grades include SAE 15W-40 diesel-rated oils (API CF or
higher).
Oil pressures:
- Operating: 300-450 kPa (44-65 psi)
- Idle: 100-150 kPa (15-22 psi)
Cooling is provided by a belt-driven centrifugal water pump, circulating
coolant through the block, head, and radiator. A thermostat regulates
coolant flow, beginning to open at approximately 82°C (180°F) and fully
opening at around 95°C (203°F).
Cooling-system capacity ranges from 18 to 22 liters (19-23 US quarts).
Radiator cap pressure is generally 70-90 kPa (10-13 psi). Large
agricultural radiators support continuous heavy-load operation.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Air intake systems vary by equipment
application:
- Agricultural tractors: dual-stage dry-element filters
- Industrial engines: heavy-duty canister filters or cyclone
pre-cleaners
Turbocharging is not standard on the D436 (unlike the DT436 variant),
making it a naturally aspirated engine with a strong torque rise. The
exhaust manifold is cast iron, designed for high thermal durability.
Electrical systems typically include a 12-volt alternator producing
30-45 amps. Starter motors usually supply 2.5-3.5 kW of cranking power.
Cold-starting aids may include manifold heaters or ether-assist systems
depending on model.
Electrical monitoring devices include:
- Oil-pressure sender
- Water-temperature sender
- Tachometer pickup (on some machines)
Depending on installation, the D436 may
drive:
- Hydraulic pumps
