The Isuzu 6HE1T is a heavy duty, turbocharged,
inline six cylinder diesel engine engineered for medium duty trucks,
heavy buses, large construction machinery, agricultural tractors,
generator sets, and stationary industrial applications. As the
turbocharged evolution of the naturally aspirated 6HE1, the 6HE1T
increases power and torque significantly while retaining the proven
durability, reliability, and long service life characteristic of Isuzu’s
HE series.
Designed for demanding work environments, the 6HE1T uses a cast iron
block and head, seven main bearing forged steel crankshaft, robust
lubrication and cooling systems, a fully mechanical direct injection
fuel system, and a conservative power rating to ensure long operational
life even under continuous load. Its strong low end torque, dependable
mechanical simplicity, and resistance to overheating make it a preferred
engine in heavy industrial and construction fleets worldwide.
The Isuzu 6HE1T is a four stroke, inline six, water cooled turbocharged
diesel engine. Total displacement is approximately 7790 cc or 7.79
liters (483 cu.in). Bore is 115.0 mm or 4.53 inches. Stroke is 125.0 mm
or 4.92 inches. This long stroke configuration produces high torque at
medium rpm and supports efficient combustion.
Compression ratio varies by model year and emissions package, typically
between 17.5:1 and 18.2:1. Turbocharged versions generally use slightly
lower compression ratios than their naturally aspirated counterparts to
accommodate boosted intake pressures. Torque output generally ranges:
650 to 850 Nm or 479 to 627 lb-ft at 1500 to 1700 rpm.
Power output varies by application:
— Standard turbocharged truck version: 200 to 240 horsepower at
approximately 2400 to 2600 rpm
— Industrial and generator variants: 160 to 220 horsepower for
continuous duty
— Heavy construction equipment versions: 210 to 230 horsepower depending
on calibration.
The firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. Crankshaft rotation is clockwise when
viewed from the front. The crankshaft is forged steel with seveNmain
bearings for high rigidity and long bearing life. Pistons are cast
aluminum with strong ring lands and oil cooling galleries. Connecting
rods are forged steel with replaceable bearings. The block is cast iron
with deep skirt design and large mounting surfaces. The cylinder head is
cast iron with direct injection bowls and hardened valve seats.
The camshaft is located in the block and is gear driven. Valve actuation
uses pushrods and rocker arms. Gear driven timing ensures permanent
valve timing accuracy and eliminates belt service. The valvetrain is
engineered for long life under heavy service loads.
The 6HE1T uses a fully mechanical direct injection fuel system. Fuel is
drawn from the tank by a mechanical lift pump, passed through a primary
water separator, then through a secondary fine filter before entering
the injection pump. The injection pump is an inline, mechanically
governed unit that controls both injection quantity and timing.
Fuel is delivered through high pressure steel lines to multi hole direct
injection nozzles. Turbocharged engines use updated fuel delivery curves
and injection timing maps to support higher airflow from the
turbocharger.
Fuel system characteristics:
— Injection pressure: typically 180 to 220 Mpa
— Lift pump: mechanical diaphragm or plunger type
— Return circuit: excess fuel routed back to tank
— Start assist: glow plugs or intake heater.
Fuel system maintenance intervals:
— Fuel filter every 20,000 km or 12,000 miles
— Water separator drained at every service
— Injector service every 60,000 to 80,000 km
— Injection pump calibration at 120,000 km or during overhaul.
The lubrication system is a full pressure wet sump arrangement. A gear
driven trochoid pump draws oil through a screened pickup and routes it
through a full flow spin on filter before distribution throughout the
engine. Turbocharged models always use piston cooling jets to reduce
crown temperature under boosted load.
Lubrication specifications:
— Oil capacity: 18 to 20 liters or 19.0 to 21.1 US quarts
— Normal operating oil pressure: 350 to 450 kPa or 51 to 65 psi
— Idle oil pressure: 70 to 100 kPa or 10 to 15 psi
— Recommended oil: SAE 15W 40 diesel grade.
Oil change intervals:
— Trucks: 5000 to 8000 km
— Industrial equipment: 250 to 300 operating hours
— Generator sets: every 250 hours.
Cooling is handled by a liquid based system using a belt driven
centrifugal water pump. Coolant passes through block jackets, cylinder
head passages, radiator, and heater core. Turbocharged engines include
oil cooled or water cooled turbocharger housings, depending on version.
Cooling specifications:
— Capacity: 26 to 30 liters or 27.5 to 31.7 quarts
— System pressure: 70 to 100 kPa or 10 to 15 psi
— Thermostat opening temperature: 82 C or 180 F
— Fully open temperature: approximately 95 C or 203 F
— Coolant type: 50 percent ethylene glycol and 50 percent water.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The 6HE1T uses a turbocharger delivering 0.5 to 1.0 bar boost depending
on calibration. Some models include intercooling. Air intake uses a dry
filter element with optional multi stage cyclone pre cleaners for dusty
industrial environments. Manifolds are cast aluminum or cast iron
depending on variant.
The exhaust manifold is high strength cast iron built to support
turbocharger loads. Turbocharger housings are oil cooled or water cooled
depending on application. Industrial engines may include spark arrestor
exhaust systems. Emissions variants may include EGR and oxidation
catalysts.
Electrical and Starting Systems
The engine typically uses a 24 volt negative ground electrical system.
Some generator sets use 12 volt systems. Alternator output ranges from
35 to 80 amperes. Starter motor power ranges from 4.0 to 5.0 kW. Cold
starting aids include glow plugs or intake heaters depending on
configuration.
VALVE TIMING AND DRIVE MECHANISM
The camshaft and injection pump are gear driven. Valve actuation uses
pushrods and rocker arms. Hardened valve seats and guides ensure long
life.
Valve clearances (cold):
— Intake: 0.30 mm or 0.012 inches
— Exhaust: 0.40 mm or 0.016 inches.
Adjustment interval:
— Every 20,000 km
— Every 500 hours in industrial engines.
Approximate dimensions vary by application.
Standard dimensions:
— Length: 1200 mm or 47.2 inches
— Width: 720 mm or 28.3 inches
— Height: 1050 mm or 41.3 inches.
Dry weight: 650 to 750 kg or 1433 to 1653 lbs depending on turbocharger
and accessories.
Regular service intervals include:
— Oil and filter: 5000 to 8000 km or 250 to 300 hours
— Fuel filter: every 20,000 km
— Air filter: inspect at 10,000 km; replace at 20,000 to 30,000 km
— Coolant: replace every 2 years or 40,000 km
— Valve lash: every 20,000 km or 500 hours
— Injector servicing: every 60,000 to 80,000 km.
