The Isuzu 6BD1T engine is a turbocharged, heavy
duty inline six cylinder diesel engine developed by Isuzu for demanding
commercial, industrial, and construction applications. As the
turbocharged counterpart of the naturally aspirated 6BD1, the 6BD1T
incorporates forced induction to increase power and torque without
sacrificing longevity.
It is widely used iNmedium duty trucks, buses, heavy
constructioNmachinery, excavators, loaders, agricultural equipment,
generator sets, and off road industrial platforms. The 6BD1T is known
for its exceptional durability, low specific fuel consumption, smooth
low end torque, simplified mechanical systems, and ability to endure
harsh work environments with minimal downtime.
With a cast iron block and head, gear driven camshaft, robust
lubrication and cooling systems, and a fully mechanical direct injection
fuel system, the 6BD1T routinely achieves extremely long service life
with proper maintenance.
The Isuzu 6BD1T is a four stroke, inline six, water cooled diesel engine
with a displacement of approximately 5785 cc or 5.79 liters (353 cu.in).
Bore is 102.0 mm or 4.02 inches. Stroke is 118.0 mm or 4.65 inches. The
long stroke design provides excellent torque at low rpm and reduces
mechanical stress. Compression ratio ranges from 17.0:1 to 17.5:1
depending on turbocharger configuration.
Power output of the 6BD1T varies by application. General factory ratings
include:
— 150 to 180 horsepower at approximately 2600 rpm for truck and bus
applications
— 140 to 160 horsepower for industrial continuous duty versions
— 160 to 190 horsepower for constructioNmachinery variants.
Torque output ranges: 500 to 650 Nm or 369 to 479 lb-ft at around 1500
to 1700 rpm. The firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. Crankshaft rotation is
clockwise when viewed from the front. The crankshaft is forged steel
with seveNmain bearings, offering outstanding strength and resistance to
torsional stress. Pistons are cast aluminum alloy with reinforced crowns
and oil cooling galleries.
Connecting rods are forged steel with replaceable bearings. The engine
block is cast iron with heavy cross bracing and deep skirt construction.
The cylinder head is cast iron with direct injection combustion
chambers. Valve seats and guides are hardened for extended service life.
The 6BD1T uses a mechanical direct injection system. A mechanical lift
pump draws diesel from the tank, passing it through a primary water
separator and a secondary fine filter. Fuel is delivered to a
mechanically governed inline injection pump. The injection pump meters
fuel quantity and controls timing. High pressure steel lines route fuel
to multi hole direct injectors. Turbocharged versions use revised
injection timing curves and increased fuel delivery for proper air fuel
ratio management.
Fuel injection pressure typically ranges from 180 to 210 Mpa depending
on pump calibration. Excess fuel returns to the tank through a return
system. Cold start performance is aided by intake air heaters or glow
plugs depending on version.
Fuel system maintenance:
— Fuel filter replacement every 20000 km or 12000 miles
— Water separator drainage at each service
— Injector service every 60000 to 80000 km
— Pump calibration at major overhaul.
The lubrication system is a full pressure, wet sump design using a gear
driven oil pump. Oil is drawn from the sump through a screened pickup
and routed through a full flow spin on filter. Turbocharged versions
include piston cooling jets to reduce crown temperature. Oil capacity is
generally 13 to 15 liters or 13.7 to 15.8 US quarts. Operating oil
pressure ranges from 300 to 450 kPa or 43 to 65 psi. Hot idle pressure
is typically 70 to 100 kPa or 10 to 15 psi. Recommended oil is SAE 15W
40 diesel grade.
Oil change intervals:
— Trucks and buses: 5000 to 8000 km
— Industrial equipment: every 250 to 300 operating hours.
The cooling system is liquid based using a belt driven centrifugal water
pump. Coolant circulates through block and head passages, radiator,
turbocharger cooling circuit if equipped, and heater core where
installed.
Thermostat opening begins at approximately 82 C or 180 F, full opening
at about 95 C or 203 F. Cooling system capacity is typically 20 to 24
liters or 21 to 25 US quarts. Turbocharged applications usually use
larger radiators.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
The 6BD1T uses a turbocharger to increase intake air volume and boost
engine efficiency. Boost pressure typically ranges from 0.5 to 0.8 bar
depending on version. No intercooler is used oNmany older variants,
though some industrial versions include oil cooled or water cooled
turbochargers. Air intake uses a dry element air filter, with optional
cyclone pre cleaners for dusty environments.
The exhaust manifold is heavy cast iron designed to withstand
turbocharger heat. The turbocharger is mounted directly on the manifold.
Industrial versions often include spark arrestors. Some markets include
EGR systems.
| Electrical and Starting Systems |
The 6BD1T standard uses a 24 volt electrical system, although some
generator sets may use 12 volts. Alternator output ranges from 35 to 70
amperes. Starter motors range from 3.0 to 4.0 kW. Intake heaters or glow
plugs assist cold starting. Batteries range from 90 to 150 amp hours.
The camshaft and injection pump are gear driven. Valve actuation uses
pushrods and rocker arms.
Valve clearances (cold):
— Intake: 0.30 mm or 0.012 inches
— Exhaust: 0.40 mm or 0.016 inches.
Engine dimensions vary by accessory configuration.
Approximate measurements:
— Length: 1100 mm or 43.3 inches
— Width: 650 mm or 25.6 inches
— Height: 950 mm or 37.4 inches
Dry weight: 500 to 560 kg or 1102 to 1234 lbs depending on turbocharger
and accessories.
Recommended maintenance intervals:
— Engine oil and filter: 5000 to 8000 km or every 250 to 300 hours
— Fuel filter: every 20000 km
— Air filter: inspect every 10000 km and replace every 20000 to 30000 km
— Coolant: replace every 2 years or 40000 km
— Valve adjustment: every 20000 km or 500 hours
— Injector service: every 60000 to 80000 km.
Compression pressure:
— Normal: 2800 to 3200 kPa or 406 to 464 psi
— Minimum: 2400 kPa or 348 psi.
— Cylinder head bolts: 160 to 180 Nm
— Main bearing caps: 210 Nm
— Connecting rod bolts: 110 Nm
— Flywheel bolts: 200 Nm
— Intake manifold bolts: 40 Nm
— Exhaust manifold nuts: 45 Nm
