The Cummins 6CTAA8.3 is a high-performance,
turbocharged and aftercooled, mechanically governed 8.3-liter inline-six
diesel engine engineered for heavy-duty industrial, agricultural,
generator-drive, and construction applications. As an enhanced variant
of the Cummins C-Series, the 6CTAA8.3 delivers superior power density,
excellent thermal efficiency, improved altitude performance, and robust
torque due to its high-flow turbocharger and air-to-air aftercooling
(ATAAC).
Well known for its rugged durability, simplicity, and long overhaul
life, the 6CTAA8.3 is widely used where equipment must operate reliably
under heavy load, high ambient temperatures, and extended duty cycles.
Its mechanical fuel system provides predictable performance even in
areas with variable fuel quality, while its cast-iron construction and
gear-driven components ensure long-term reliability.
The Cummins 6CTAA8.3 is a four-stroke, water-cooled, turbocharged and
aftercooled inline six-cylinder diesel engine. Total displacement is 8.3
liters (506 cubic inches). Bore is 114 mm (4.49 in) and stroke is 135 mm
(5.31 in), forming a long-stroke engine optimized for torque and
efficiency. Compression ratio ranges from 16.5:1 to 18.0:1 depending on
fueling and emissions configuration.
Standard industrial/generator output
ratings:
– Prime: 180–235 kW (241–315 hp) @ 1,500–1,800 rpm
– Standby: 200–260 kW (268–349 hp) @ 1,500–1,800 rpm
– Industrial mobile equipment: 220–300 hp (164–224 kW) @ 1,800–2,200 rpm
Peak torque: 900–1,250 Nm (664–922 lb-ft) @ 1,300–1,600 rpm
Idle speed: 650–750 rpm
Governed speed: 1,800–2,200 rpm
Firing order: 1-5-3-6-2-4.
The forged-steel crankshaft, supported by seven main bearings, provides
long service life. Pistons are reinforced aluminum or steel-crown
composite designs with internal oil jets for cooling. Connecting rods
are forged steel. The camshaft is gear-driven for timing accuracy and
durability.
The cylinder block is a high-strength cast-iron unit with parent-bore
cylinders.
Features include:
– Deep skirt for rigidity
– Heavy ribbing for strength under load
– Fully water-jacketed bores for uniform cooling
– Wide bearing saddles for stability
Parent-bore construction allows multiple rebores during overhaul.
The cylinder head is cast iron and
incorporates:
– Direct-injection combustion chambers
– Two valves per cylinder
– Hardened valve seats and guides
– Rocker-arm and pushrod valvetrain
Cold valve-lash specifications:
– Intake: 0.254 mm (0.010 in)
– Exhaust: 0.508 mm (0.020 in).
The 6CTAA8.3 uses a fully mechanical direct-injection fuel system known
for reliability and long service life.
System components:
– Mechanical lift pump
– Bosch inline mechanical injection pump
– Multi-hole mechanical injectors
– Primary water-separating filter
– Secondary fine filter
Injection pressures typically range from 250 to 450 bar.
Fuel maintenance:
– Replace filters every 250–300 hr
– Drain water separator daily
– Injector inspection every 1,000–1,500 hr
– Pump timing verification during overhaul.
The engine uses a full-pressure wet-sump lubrication system driven by a
gear pump.
Oil capacity: 18–23 liters (19–24.3 qt)
Oil pressure:
– Operating: 275–450 kPa (40–65 psi)
– Idle: 70–100 kPa (10–15 psi)
Preferred oil: SAE 15W-40 API CI-4, CJ-4, or CK-4
Oil-change interval: 250 hours (generator duty).
The cooling system includes:
– Belt-driven centrifugal water pump
– Thermostat-regulated coolant flow
– Radiator or remote cooling package
– Oil cooler integrated into block
Thermostat:
– Opens at 82°C (180°F)
– Fully open at 95°C (203°F)
Cooling system capacity: approx. 25–30 liters (26–32 qt)
Operating pressure: 70–100 kPa (10–15 psi).
As an “AA” engine, the 6CTAA uses an
air-to-air charge-air cooler (ATAAC), providing:
– Lower intake temperatures
– Improved power and torque
– Reduced thermal load
– Better fuel efficiency
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
