General Technical Data
The Toyota 2AR-FE is a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder gasoline engine from the AR family, introduced in 2008 as a successor to the 2AZ-FE. It represents a significant advancement in Toyota’s mid-displacement engine design philosophy, emphasizing efficiency, performance, and durability. The engine employs an all-aluminum construction with a chain-driven Dual VVT-i system controlling both intake and exhaust camshafts.
In later applications, an advanced Valvematic
version was introduced, offering continuous control of valve lift,
timing, and duration to further improve fuel economy and throttle
response. The 2AR-FE has been used extensively in Toyota and Lexus
vehicles such as the Camry, RAV4, Alphard, Venza, and others, and it
remains one of Toyota’s most reliable modern naturally aspirated
powerplants.
Designed for global use, the 2AR-FE combines high efficiency, low
emissions, and smooth power delivery. Its lightweight aluminum block
with cast-iron liners, forged steel crankshaft, and integrated balance
shafts ensure durability with reduced NVH characteristics. The engine’s
design allows longitudinal or transverse installation, and its robust
architecture supports both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive
configurations.
The Toyota 2AR-FE has a displacement of 2494 cc (152.2 cubic inches),
achieved through a bore of 90.0 mm (3.54 inches) and a stroke of 98.0 mm
(3.86 inches). This long-stroke design enhances low-end torque and
efficiency. The compression ratio is 10.4:1 for early Dual VVT-i
versions and up to 10.8:1 for Valvematic variants.
Maximum power output ranges between 125 and 135
kW (168 to 181 horsepower) at 6000 rpm depending on application. Maximum
torque is between 230 and 240 Nm (170 to 177 lb-ft) at 4100 rpm. The
firing order is 1-3-4-2, and the crankshaft rotates clockwise viewed
from the flywheel end. Redline is approximately 6500 rpm, with a smooth
idle speed of 700 ± 50 rpm. The engine conforms to Euro 4–Euro 5
emission standards.
The cylinder block is made from die-cast aluminum alloy with cast-iron
cylinder liners for wear resistance. It features an open-deck design and
five main bearing journals supporting the forged steel crankshaft. The
crankshaft has eight counterweights for reduced vibration. Balance
shafts located in the lower crankcase balance secondary inertia forces,
improving smoothness.
The pistons are aluminum alloy with
low-friction molybdenum coating, while connecting rods are sintered
steel with fracture-split caps for precision alignment. The cylinder
head is aluminum alloy, incorporating dual overhead camshafts (DOHC)
operating four valves per cylinder via roller rocker arms with hydraulic
lash adjusters, eliminating the need for periodic valve clearance
adjustment.
In the Valvematic version, the intake system adds an electronically
controlled mechanism that continuously varies valve lift in addition to
timing, achieving a throttless air control concept. This improves
volumetric efficiency, throttle response, and reduces pumping losses for
up to 10% better fuel economy.
Fuel System
The 2AR-FE employs a sequential multiport electronic fuel injection (EFI) system controlled by an advanced engine ECU. Each injector delivers precisely metered fuel into the intake ports, ensuring uniform air-fuel mixture and clean combustion. The injectors are twelve-hole type with fine atomization. Fuel pressure is regulated at approximately 380 kPa (55 psi). The system uses an in-tank electric fuel pump and a returnless configuration to minimize vapor emissions.
The throttle body is electronically controlled (ETCS-i), adjusting airflow in concert with VVT-i and ignition timing to optimize efficiency. Fuel type is unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of at least 95 RON (91 AKI). Fuel filter service is generally not required as it is integrated into the fuel pump module, though inspection at 120,000 km (75,000 miles) is recommended.
Lubrication System
The engine uses a fully pressurized wet-sump lubrication system with a trochoid oil pump driven directly by the crankshaft. Oil from the sump passes through a strainer and is delivered to all critical components via internal galleries. Piston cooling oil jets spray the underside of each piston to maintain stable temperatures under load. The oil filter is a replaceable cartridge type located on the lower right side of the block, incorporating a bypass valve and anti-drainback function. Oil pressure at 3000 rpm is approximately 400–500 kPa (58–72 psi).
Oil capacity with filter replacement is 4.5 liters (4.8 US quarts, 4.0 Imperial quarts). Recommended oil is SAE 0W-20 or 5W-30 meeting API SN or higher. The positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve is integrated in the rocker cover to control blow-by gases and maintain clean emissions. Oil and filter replacement interval is every 10,000 km (6,000 miles) or six months under normal driving, reduced to 5,000 km (3,000 miles) in severe service.
Cooling System
A pressurized liquid cooling system maintains thermal stability. A belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulates coolant through the block, head, radiator, and heater core. The thermostat opens at approximately 82°C (180°F) and is fully open by 95°C (203°F). The radiator is aluminum cross-flow type with an electric cooling fan controlled by the ECU. System pressure is about 108 kPa (15.6 psi). Total coolant capacity is approximately 7.0 liters (7.4 US quarts, 6.2 Imperial quarts).
Recommended coolant is Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink) pre-mixed 50/50 with distilled water, lasting up to 160,000 km (100,000 miles) or five years before replacement. The cooling circuit includes bypass channels and an air-bleed system to prevent hot spots and ensure even temperature distribution. Proper coolant maintenance is essential to avoid corrosion in the aluminum block and head.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The intake system consists of a plastic composite manifold with long tuned runners for optimal low-to-midrange torque. The air filter is a dry paper element type, replaced every 20,000 km (12,000 miles). The throttle body is electronically actuated, eliminating the mechanical throttle cable. In Valvematic versions, throttle control is primarily achieved through valve lift modulation, with the throttle plate used only for idle and fail-safe operation.
The exhaust system features a high-flow stainless-steel manifold with an integrated catalytic converter mounted close to the cylinder head for fast light-off. Downstream oxygen sensors monitor catalyst efficiency. The system meets LEV II and Euro 5 standards depending on market.
Ignition and Electrical System
The 2AR-FE uses a coil-on-plug (COP) ignition system with four independent ignition coils controlled by the ECU. Spark plugs are iridium-tipped, long-life type (Denso SK20R11 or NGK IFR6A11) gapped to 1.1 mm (0.043 in). Replacement interval is every 120,000 km (75,000 miles). The alternator output is 100–130 amperes depending on application, and the starter motor is a 1.2–1.4 kilowatt reduction-gear type.
The battery is 12 volts, typically rated 55–70 ampere-hours. The engine control system includes sensors for crank position, cam position, air mass flow, throttle angle, knock, oxygen, and coolant temperature. The ECU uses closed-loop feedback for precise mixture and ignition control under all conditions.
Valve Timing and Drive Mechanism
Camshafts are driven by a single-row roller timing chain with an automatic hydraulic tensioner and chain guides. The chain is designed for the life of the engine under normal conditions. Dual VVT-i provides continuous adjustment of intake and exhaust valve timing over a range of approximately 40° crankshaft rotation. The Valvematic mechanism adds a continuously variable valve lift system operated by an electric motor and linkage assembly on the intake side.
This allows variable control of lift between approximately 0.3 and 11.0 mm, optimizing airflow without a traditional throttle restriction. Together, these systems provide excellent efficiency, linear power delivery, and reduced pumping losses.
Other Systems
The 2AR-FE incorporates a closed-loop evaporative emissions control system (EVAP) with charcoal canister and purge valve. The positive crankcase ventilation system reduces blow-by emissions and maintains crankcase pressure balance. The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system, present on certain markets, lowers combustion temperature to reduce NOx formation.
The idle speed and throttle position are controlled by ETCS-i, while the ECU adapts to load and altitude conditions through learned parameters. The OBD-II compliant ECU records fault codes and sensor data for diagnostics via a standard 16-pin interface. The electrical harness and sensors are designed for durability, with weatherproof connectors ensuring reliability in harsh conditions.
Dimensions and Weight
Overall engine length is approximately 650 mm (25.6 inches), width 620 mm (24.4 inches), and height 705 mm (27.8 inches). Dry weight is around 145 kg (320 lbs) for the Dual VVT-i version and approximately 150 kg (331 lbs) for Valvematic units. Compact dimensions permit transverse or longitudinal mounting. The aluminum construction significantly reduces vehicle front-axle weight, contributing to balanced handling and improved fuel economy.
Maintenance Data
Routine service is straightforward and designed for long-term reliability. Recommended oil and filter change interval is 10,000 km (6,000 miles). Air filter replacement every 20,000 km (12,000 miles). Spark plugs every 120,000 km (75,000 miles). Coolant every 160,000 km (100,000 miles) or five years. Drive belt inspection every 40,000 km (25,000 miles). The PCV valve and throttle body should be inspected at each major service.
Compression pressure standard is about 1,300 kPa (190 psi) per cylinder with a minimum limit of 1,000 kPa (145 psi) and a maximum difference of 100 kPa (15 psi). Normal idle speed is 700 ± 50 rpm. The timing chain requires no scheduled replacement but should be checked for wear after 250,000 km (155,000 miles). The fuel system and injectors should be cleaned or inspected every 100,000 km (62,000 miles).
