The Isuzu 4JG2 is a highly respected
mid-displacement, naturally aspirated diesel engine developed primarily
for SUVs, light trucks, commercial vehicles, and industrial applications
requiring high torque, smooth operation, and long-term reliability. It
represents an evolution of the earlier 4JB1 and 4JG1 engines, featuring
improvements in combustion efficiency, airflow, cooling, and internal
reinforcement. The 4JG2 became well known through its use in the Isuzu
Trooper/Bighorn, Isuzu MU/Wizard, Isuzu Rodeo, and selected light
commercial vehicles across global markets.
Available in both mechanical and electronic versions (4JG2-T and
4JG2-TC), the engine delivers improved refinement, reduced noise, and
enhanced drivability compared to earlier Isuzu diesel designs. Its
cast-iron block and head, fully mechanical fuel system (on early
variants), turbocharging, and robust bottom-end construction make it
suitable for both highway use and heavy-duty off-road service. While
more complex than the classic 4JB1, it retains Isuzu’s trademark
durability and remains popular in the aftermarket and rebuild community.
The Isuzu 4JG2 is a four-stroke, water-cooled, inline four-cylinder
diesel engine with a total displacement of 3,059 cc (186.6 cubic
inches). Bore is 95.4 mm (3.76 inches), and stroke is 107 mm (4.21
inches), yielding a long-stroke design that promotes high low-RPM torque
and good fuel economy. Firing order: 1–3–4–2. Idle speed: 750 ± 50 rpm.
Governed max speed: 3,800–4,000 rpm.
Compression ratio:
– Mechanical NA (4JG2): approx. 18.1:1
– Mechanical turbo (4JG2-T): approx. 18.5:1.
Power output:
– Mechanical 4JG2: 90-100 hp (67-74 kW) at 3,600–3,800 rpm
– Mechanical 4JG2-T: 110-120 hp (82-89 kW) at 3,600–3,800 rpm.
Torque output:
– Mechanical 4JG2: 200–220 Nm (148–163 lb-ft) @ 2,000 rpm
– Mechanical 4JG2-T: 240–260 Nm (177–192 lb-ft) @ 2,000 rpm.
Bottom-end construction features a forged-steel crankshaft with five
main bearings, forged connecting rods, and aluminum-alloy pistons with
reinforced crowns and oil-cooling galleries. The engine utilizes
dry-type replaceable cylinder liners. A gear-driven camshaft actuates
overhead valves via pushrods and rocker arms.
The fuel system differs depending on variant:
Mechanical Direct Injection (4JG2):
– mechanical lift pump
– primary sediment/water separator
– secondary paper-element fuel filter
– gear-driven mechanical injection pump (inline or rotary depending on
market)
– multi-hole direct-injection nozzles
– fuel return circuit.
Electronic 4JG2-TC (not this document, but
related):
– electronically controlled rotary pump
– ECU-monitored injection timing
– sensors for boost, throttle, coolant temperature.
Injection pressures typically range from:
– mechanical: 180–220 bar
– electronic: 200–260 bar.
Fuel system maintenance:
– fuel filter replacement: every 10,000–15,000 km (6,200–9,300 mi)
– injector servicing: every 40,000–60,000 km (25,000–37,000 mi)
– pump timing inspection (mechanical): every 80,000 km (50,000 mi)
– water separator draining: as needed.
The 4JG2 uses a full-pressure wet-sump lubrication system with a
gear-driven oil pump.
Specifications:
– oil capacity: 6.5–7.5 liters (6.9–7.9 US quarts)
– operating oil pressure: 300–380 kPa (44–55 psi)
– idle oil pressure: 80–120 kPa (12–17 psi)
– recommended oils: SAE 15W-40 or 20W-50 diesel (API CF or higher).
Oil change intervals:
– 5,000–7,500 km (3,000–4,600 mi)
– industrial: 150–250 hours.
Turbocharger longevity depends heavily on oil quality and replacement
intervals.
Cooling is provided by a closed-loop forced-circulation liquid cooling
system.
Cooling specifications:
– total coolant capacity: 8–10 liters (8.4–10.6 US quarts)
– thermostat opening temperature: 82°C (180°F)
– fully open temperature: 95°C (203°F)
– pressure cap rating: 70–90 kPa (10–13 psi).
Industrial versions often use larger radiators and heavy-duty fans.
Cooling maintenance:
– coolant replacement every 30,000 km or 2 years
– clean radiator fins in dusty environments.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Intake system:
– dry-element air filter (standard)
– optional oil-bath/cyclone pre-cleaners for dusty regions
