The Nissan HR15DE is a 1.5-liter inline-four,
naturally aspirated, four-stroke gasoline engine belonging to the
HR-series, which includes the HR10, HR12, HR15, and HR16 engine
families. Introduced in the mid-2000s, the HR15DE was developed to
replace the aging CR14DE and earlier small-displacement engines used in
Nissan’s compact vehicles.
It was designed to provide improved efficiency,
low emissions, enhanced drivability, and refined NVH characteristics
while maintaining high reliability and low maintenance costs. The engine
is widely used in models such as the Nissan Tiida/Versa (C11), Note
(E11), AD/AD Expert, Wingroad, and several regional Nissan products
throughout Asia, the Middle East, and South America.
As part of Nissan’s modern engine lineup, the HR15DE incorporates
lightweight aluminum construction, friction-reducing technologies,
electronic throttle control, sequential multi-point fuel injection, and
continuously variable valve timing (CVTC) on the intake camshaft. The
long-stroke configuration contributes to strong low- and mid-range
torque, making the HR15DE well suited for urban and suburban driving.
Despite its moderate displacement, it produces performance comparable to
earlier 1.6-liter engines while achieving better fuel economy.
The HR15DE is known for its smooth operation, strong fuel efficiency,
long service life, and compatibility with Nissan’s Xtronic CVT
transmissions, which became standard in many markets. Its
straightforward design and robust internal components allow it to
achieve high mileage with minimal mechanical failures.
The HR15DE is an inline-four gasoline engine with a displacement of 1498
cc (91.4 cubic inches). Bore is 78.0 mm (3.07 inches), and stroke is
78.4 mm (3.09 inches). This near-square configuration provides a balance
between torque production and high-rpm breathing efficiency. Compression
ratio varies by market, typically between 10.0:1 and 11.1:1.
Power output ranges from 107 to 116 horsepower (79 to 86 kW) at
approximately 6000 rpm. Maximum torque output ranges from 148 to 155 Nm
(109 to 114 lb-ft) at around 4400 rpm. The firing order is 1-3-4-2. Idle
speed is generally set around 700 to 750 rpm depending on ECU
calibration and vehicle application.
The crankshaft is supported by five main bearings and is fully
counterweighted for smooth operation. Forged steel connecting rods and
lightweight aluminum pistons with molybdenum skirt coatings reduce
friction and improve durability. Pistons incorporate optimized crown
designs for improved combustion efficiency and reduced knock tendency.
The HR15DE uses an aluminum cylinder head featuring dual overhead
camshafts (DOHC) operating four valves per cylinder, totaling sixteen
valves. Dual camshafts provide increased airflow and efficient
combustion, especially at higher rpm ranges. The intake camshaft is
equipped with Nissan’s CVTC (Continuously Variable Valve Timing
Control), which adjusts valve timing based on engine load, rpm, and
temperature. CVTC improves torque at low rpm, enhances fuel efficiency,
and reduces emissions.
Valve actuation is handled via bucket tappets with shim adjustments.
Unlike some HR-series engines, the HR15DE does not employ hydraulic
valve lash adjusters, so periodic clearance inspection is required at
high mileage. Intake valve diameter is approximately 30 mm (1.18
inches), and exhaust valve diameter is roughly 25 mm (0.98 inches). The
combustion chamber is shaped for optimal swirl and mixture preparation,
supported by a high-efficiency intake manifold design.
The HR15DE uses sequential multi-point fuel injection (MPI). Fuel is
delivered by an electric in-tank pump to a fuel rail operating at
approximately 300 kPa (43 psi) under most operating conditions. Each
cylinder receives fuel via a precision injector controlled by the engine
control module (ECM).
Injection timing and duration are adjusted
continuously based on input from multiple sensors, including:
- Mass air flow (MAF) sensor
- Throttle position sensor (TPS) or electronic throttle body position
sensor
- Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
- Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor
- Upstream oxygen sensor (lambda sensor)
- Crankshaft position sensor (CKP)
- Camshaft position sensor (CMP)
- Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor (some variants)
The ECM controls mixture using closed-loop feedback from the oxygen
sensor to maintain ideal stoichiometry under light load, switching to
open-loop enrichment under high load for safe combustion.
The HR15DE uses a full-pressure lubrication system with a trochoid-type
oil pump mounted at the front of the engine and driven by the
crankshaft. Pressurized oil is routed to the crankshaft bearings,
connecting rod bearings, camshaft journals, timing chain, and valvetrain
components.
Total oil capacity is approximately 3.3 to 3.5 liters (3.5 to 3.7 U.S.
quarts). Recommended oil viscosity is SAE 0W-20 or 5W-30 depending on
climate and service schedule.
Oil pressure values are:
- At 3000 rpm: 350–450 kPa (50–65 psi)
- At idle: above 70 kPa (10 psi)
An oil cooler is included in some variants to maintain viscosity
stability under high thermal load.
The cooling system uses a belt-driven centrifugal water pump to
circulate coolant through the aluminum cylinder head, cast-iron cylinder
liners, radiator, and heater core. Thermostat opening temperature is
typically 82°C (180°F), with full opening near 95°C (203°F). Coolant
capacity is approximately 5.0 to 5.5 liters (5.3 to 5.8 U.S. quarts).
The cooling system includes:
- Aluminum cross-flow radiator
- Electric cooling fan controlled by ECM
- Coolant overflow reservoir
- Integrated bypass circuits for quicker warm-up
- Coolant temperature sensor for ECM control
Proper cooling is essential for emissions performance and durability,
especially with CVT-equipped models that place higher thermal loads on
the engine during sustained operation.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
The induction system consists of a molded plastic air inlet duct,
resonator chambers, a dry-paper air filter, and a composite or aluminum
intake manifold. The throttle body is electronically controlled in most
applications, allowing the ECM to modulate throttle position for smooth
acceleration and precise idle control.
The exhaust manifold is cast into or attached to the head, depending on
model year, and flows directly into a catalytic converter located close
to the engine for fast light-off and improved emissions performance.
Downstream components include a secondary catalytic converter,
resonator, and muffler.
| Ignition and Electrical System |
The HR15DE uses coil-on-plug ignition, providing precise spark timing
without the need for high-voltage plug wires. Each cylinder has its own
ignition coil controlled directly by the ECM. Spark plug type is
typically NGK iridium-tipped for long life.
Spark plug gap is approximately 1.0 mm (0.039 inches). Replacement
intervals range from 60,000 to 100,000 km (37,000 to 62,000 miles)
depending on plug type.
The charging system includes an alternator rated between 80 and 110
amperes depending on vehicle configuration. The starter motor is a
compact, high-torque reduction-gear unit.
Additional systems integrated into the
HR15DE include:
- EVAP system with charcoal canister for vapor emission control
- PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system
- EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) in some markets
- Drive-by-wire throttle control
- OBD-II diagnostics with misfire detection, sensor monitoring, and
adaptive learning
