The Suzuki D20AA is a 2.0-liter, inline-four
turbocharged diesel engine produced under license from Fiat, where it is known
as the 2.0 JTD Multijet. Developed as part of the Fiat-GM joint venture diesel
engine family, this powerplant was introduced in the facelifted European version
of the Suzuki SX4 from 2009 to 2014, as well as its rebadged counterpart, the
Fiat Sedici. The D20AA represents Suzuki’s adoption of advanced common rail
diesel technology, offering a combination of high torque output, fuel
efficiency, and refined operation suitable for compact crossover applications.
The D20AA is a water-cooled, four-stroke, turbocharged diesel engine with a DOHC
valvetrain and 16 valves. The engine utilizes a common rail direct injection
system with Multijet technology, allowing for multiple injection events per
combustion cycle to reduce combustion noise and emissions while improving power
delivery. The turbocharger is intercooled, and the engine is designed to meet
Euro 5 emissions standards. The D20AA features an all-iron construction with a
cast iron cylinder block and cylinder head, a design that prioritizes durability
under the high cylinder pressures of turbocharged diesel operation.
The D20AA is a water-cooled, four-stroke, turbocharged diesel engine configured
for transverse mounting in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicle
architectures. Its design emphasizes low-end torque, fuel efficiency, and
emissions compliance.

The cylinder block is constructed from gray cast iron,
a material selected for its exceptional rigidity, vibration-damping properties,
and ability to withstand the elevated cylinder pressures generated by
turbocharged diesel combustion. The block features a closed-deck design where
the cylinder bores are fully supported by the water jacket structure at the top
deck surface, providing robust clamping force for the cylinder head gasket and
minimizing bore distortion under high thermal and mechanical loads.
Cast-in-place cylinder bores are machined directly into the iron casting. The
block incorporates five main bearing webs with two-bolt main bearing caps. The
crankshaft is supported by five bearings and is constructed from forged steel to
withstand the high torque output of the engine. A stamped steel oil pan is
sealed to the lower crankcase, providing the oil reservoir. The block design
incorporates extensive ribbing around the main bearing area to minimize flexure
under load.
Block Material: Gray cast iron
Bore Diameter (finished): 83.0 mm (3.27 in)
Main Bearing Caps: Cast iron, two-bolt design
Cylinder Bore Deformation Limit: 0.05 mm (0.0020 in)
The cylinder head is manufactured from gray cast iron,
matching the block material to ensure uniform thermal expansion across the
cylinder head gasket interface. This all-iron construction provides exceptional
durability and resistance to thermal cycling. The DOHC valvetrain actuates
sixteen valves - four valves per cylinder - through a system of hydraulic lash
adjusters and roller finger followers. The hydraulic lash adjusters
automatically maintain zero valve clearance throughout the engine’s service
life, eliminating the need for manual valve adjustments.
The camshafts are driven by a reinforced rubber timing belt from the crankshaft,
with an automatic spring-loaded tensioner maintaining belt tension. The
combustion chambers are of a swirl-type design with centrally located fuel
injectors and glow plugs. The engine is of interference design; in the event of
timing belt failure, valve-to-piston contact occurs.
Head Material: Gray cast iron.
Valve Configuration: DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder with hydraulic lash adjusters
and roller finger followers.
Valve Diameter (Intake): 30.0 mm (1.18 in).
Valve Diameter (Exhaust): 27.0 mm (1.06 in).
Valve Stem Diameter: 6.0 mm (0.24 in).
Valve Seat Angle: 45 degrees.
Interference Design: Yes.
The D20AA employs a common rail direct injection system
with Multijet technology. A high-pressure fuel pump, driven by the timing belt,
draws fuel from the tank and delivers it to a common rail accumulator at
pressures up to 160 MPa (23,200 psi). The rail distributes pressurized fuel to
four solenoid or piezoelectric injectors, which are controlled by the engine
control unit (ECU) to deliver precise fuel quantities at precisely timed
intervals.
The Multijet system enables multiple injection events per combustion cycle,
including pilot injections, main injection, and post injections. This capability
reduces combustion noise, lowers particulate and nitrogen oxide emissions,
improves cold-start performance, and optimizes fuel efficiency across the
operating range. The ECU monitors inputs from the crankshaft position sensor,
camshaft position sensor, coolant temperature sensor, intake air pressure
sensor, rail pressure sensor, and oxygen sensor to optimize injection
parameters. A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is integrated into the exhaust
system to meet Euro 5 emissions standards.
Injection Type: Common rail direct injection (Multijet)
Injection Pressure: 160 MPa (23,200 psi) maximum
High-Pressure Pump Type: Radial piston pump, timing belt-driven
Injector Type: Solenoid or piezoelectric, centrally mounted
Fuel Requirement: Diesel fuel meeting EN 590 specification (cetane number 51
minimum)
Fuel Cutoff: 5,000 rpm
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, wet-sump
design utilizing a gear-type oil pump mounted to the front of the crankshaft.
The oil pump draws lubricant from the stamped steel oil pan through a mesh
strainer and circulates it through a full-flow, replaceable oil filter before
entering the main oil gallery. From the gallery, pressurized oil is distributed
to the crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings,
hydraulic lash adjusters, and timing belt tensioner.
A pressure relief valve integrated into the oil pump maintains system pressure
within operational limits. Piston cooling oil jets are incorporated to direct a
stream of oil toward the underside of each piston crown, managing thermal loads
associated with turbocharged diesel operation. The lubrication system is
designed to accommodate extended oil change intervals when using approved
low-ash oils.
Oil Type: Synthetic, SAE 5W-30 (meeting ACEA C2 specification)
Oil Capacity (with filter): 4.4 liters (4.6 US qt)
Oil Pressure (at 3,000 rpm): 300-400 kPa (43.5-58.0 psi)
Oil Pump Type: Gear-type, crankshaft-driven
Oil Filter Type: Cartridge-type, replaceable element
The cooling system is a pressurized, liquid-cooled
design employing a cross-flow aluminum radiator with an electric cooling fan. A
centrifugal-type water pump, driven by the timing belt, circulates coolant
through the engine block, cylinder head, turbocharger center housing,
intercooler, and heater core. A wax-pellet thermostat regulates coolant flow to
maintain optimal operating temperature, with a bypass circuit that allows the
engine to warm rapidly by circulating coolant only within the engine until the
thermostat opens.
The cooling system is sized to manage the thermal load generated by the
turbocharger and the elevated combustion temperatures of diesel operation. A
dedicated coolant line supplies the turbocharger center housing to prevent oil
coking after engine shutdown.
Coolant Type: Ethylene-glycol based antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors
Coolant Capacity: 6.5 liters (6.9 US qt)
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 83-88 °C (181-190 °F)

Water Pump Type: Centrifugal, timing belt-driven
Turbocharger System: The engine is equipped with a
fixed-geometry or variable geometry turbocharger depending on the production
variant. The turbocharger features a water-cooled bearing housing and is mounted
to the exhaust manifold. An air-to-air intercooler reduces intake air
temperature before entering the engine. Boost pressure is regulated by an
internal wastegate or variable nozzle mechanism.
Ignition System: Not applicable (compression ignition engine). Glow plugs
provide cold-start assistance. The system utilizes ceramic or steel pencil-type
glow plugs controlled by a glow plug relay and timer based on coolant
temperature. Glow plug operation may continue after start to reduce emissions
during warm-up.
Intake System: Composite plastic intake manifold with integrated charge air
cooler on certain variants. The intake system incorporates an air cleaner
housing with a dry-type paper filter element. An electronically controlled
throttle body manages airflow into the engine for EGR control and shutdown.
Exhaust System: Cast iron exhaust manifold with integrated turbocharger mounting
flange. The exhaust system incorporates a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a
diesel particulate filter (DPF) to meet Euro 5 emissions standards. A heated
oxygen sensor is mounted upstream of the DOC for fuel trim feedback, with
pressure sensors monitoring DPF loading for regeneration events.
Timing Drive: A reinforced rubber timing belt with integral teeth drives the
camshafts and high-pressure fuel pump from the crankshaft sprocket. An automatic
spring-loaded tensioner maintains belt tension. The timing belt is a scheduled
maintenance item with a defined replacement interval. The engine is of
interference design.
