The Volvo B204GT is a high-performance, 2.0-litre,
16-valve turbocharged engine from the Redblock family. It was specifically
designed for "tax-brake" markets, such as Italy, Belgium, and France, where
luxury taxes were high for engines exceeding 2.0 litres of displacement. This
engine represents the zenith of Volvo’s Redblock development, combining the
robust architecture of the B230 series with a 16-valve cylinder head and forced
induction.
The B204GT produces 200 hp from a 2.0-litre displacement, achieving a specific
output of 100 hp per litre - a remarkable figure for its era. The engine
incorporates a forged crankshaft, forged connecting rods, and piston oil
squirters, making the bottom end exceptionally robust. It was offered
exclusively in rear-wheel-drive luxury and sport models for specific European
markets, remaining in limited production during the early 1990s.
Engine Type: Inline 4-cylinder, DOHC, 16 valves (4 per cylinder).
Engine Code: B204GT.
Displacement: 1986 cc (121.2 cu.in).
Bore x Stroke: 88.9 mm x 80.0 mm (3.50 in x 3.15 in).
Compression Ratio: 8.2:1.
Fuel System: Bosch Motronic electronic fuel injection (M2.4 or M2.4.2).
Turbocharger: Garrett T3 series with integral wastegate and air-to-air
intercooler.
Maximum Power: 200 hp (147 kW to 149 kW) at 5300 rpm to 5400 rpm.
Maximum Torque: 290 Nm (214 lb-ft) at 2950 rpm.
Firing Order: 1-3-4-2.
Aspiration: Turbocharged with intercooler.
Emissions Control: Non-catalytic converter version utilizing a lead-resistant
heated oxygen sensor and an Exhaust Gas Temperature Controller (EGTC) to manage
fuel enrichment under high thermal loads.
The cylinder block is constructed from cast iron, a
hallmark of the Redblock family, providing exceptional rigidity and resistance
to the elevated cylinder pressures generated by forced induction. The bore
diameter measures 88.9 mm (3.50 in), and the block features a deep-skirt design
with seven main bearings supporting the crankshaft - an unusual configuration
for an inline-four that contributes to extreme durability.
The block incorporates oil squirters positioned at each cylinder bore to direct
a spray of oil to the underside of the pistons, managing thermal loads under
sustained boost conditions. The cylinder walls are induction-hardened to resist
wear without requiring separate liners. The block includes mounting points for a
balance shaft assembly, which is driven by a separate belt to reduce engine
vibration.
The cylinder head is manufactured from aluminum alloy
and features a Double Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) design with 16 valves - 8 intake
and 8 exhaust. The camshafts are driven by a timing belt. The valvetrain
incorporates hydraulic lash adjusters that maintain zero valve clearance
throughout the engine’s service life, eliminating the need for periodic
adjustment. The valves are arranged in a pent-roof combustion chamber design
with centrally located spark plugs to promote efficient flame propagation.
The intake ports are designed to generate high swirl motion, improving fuel
atomization and combustion efficiency. The exhaust ports are optimized for
efficient evacuation of combustion gases to the turbocharger turbine housing.
This is an interference engine design; failure of the timing belt or the
internal balance shaft belt results in valve-to-piston contact.
The fuel system employs Bosch Motronic electronic fuel
injection with integrated engine management. The Motronic system combines fuel
delivery and ignition control within a single control unit. Sequential fuel
injection is utilized, with each cylinder receiving fuel from a dedicated
injector positioned in the intake port. An in-tank electric fuel pump supplies
fuel at a regulated pressure of 3.0 bar (43 psi).
The system incorporates a mass airflow sensor for load detection, a throttle
position sensor, a coolant temperature sensor, and a lead-resistant heated
oxygen sensor for closed-loop fuel control. An Exhaust Gas Temperature
Controller (EGTC) monitors exhaust gas temperature and enriches the air-fuel
mixture when elevated temperatures are detected, protecting the turbocharger and
exhaust valves.
The lubrication system is a forced-feed, wet-sump
design featuring a gear-type oil pump driven by the crankshaft. The pump draws
oil from the sump through a mesh strainer, pressurizes the lubricant, and routes
it through a full-flow oil filter. The filter is mounted remotely from the
engine block to accommodate the complex 16-valve turbocharger installation.
From the filter, oil is distributed through galleries to the seven main
bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, hydraulic lash adjusters,
and the turbocharger bearing housing. Piston oil squirters receive pressurized
oil to cool the piston crowns. An oil cooler, integrated with the radiator or
mounted separately, maintains optimal oil temperature under high-load
conditions. A pressure relief valve maintains stable system pressure across the
engine speed range.
The cooling system is a pressurized, water-cooled
system with a belt-driven water pump. Coolant circulates through the cast iron
cylinder block and aluminum cylinder head, transferring combustion heat to a
cross-flow radiator. A wax-pellet thermostat, rated at 87°C (189°F), regulates
coolant flow to maintain stable operating temperature. An electric cooling fan
provides airflow across the radiator during low-speed operation and stationary
idling.
The system includes a coolant recovery reservoir to accommodate thermal
expansion. Separate coolant circuits feed the turbocharger bearing housing to
prevent localized overheating and oil coking after engine shutdown. The
intercooler, positioned between the turbocharger compressor outlet and the
throttle body, is an air-to-air unit mounted in front of the radiator.
Timing Drive: The camshafts are driven by a rubber
timing belt. A separate belt drives the balance shaft assembly. Both belts
require scheduled replacement. The engine is an interference design; timing belt
failure results in catastrophic engine damage.
Turbocharger System: The Garrett T3 series turbocharger features a turbine
housing sized for rapid boost response. An integral wastegate, controlled by the
electronic boost control system, regulates maximum boost pressure. A charge air
cooler reduces intake air temperature, increasing charge density and resistance
to detonation.
Ignition System: The Motronic engine management system controls a
distributor-based ignition with a single coil. Ignition timing is fully mapped
based on engine speed, load, knock sensor input, and coolant temperature. A
knock sensor allows the system to retard timing under detonation conditions.
Intake System: A cast aluminum intake manifold with tuned runner lengths
enhances cylinder filling. The manifold is designed to accommodate the
intercooler outlet and throttle body positioning for the 16-valve cylinder head
configuration.
Exhaust System: A unique stainless steel exhaust manifold with individual
runners is designed specifically for the 16-valve turbo application. The
manifold merges into a single flange mounting the Garrett T3 turbocharger. The
system operates without a catalytic converter, utilizing a lead-resistant oxygen
sensor for feedback control.
Balance Shafts: Two balance shafts are mounted within the cylinder block, driven
by a separate belt from the crankshaft. These shafts counteract the second-order
vibrations inherent in inline-four engines, improving refinement at higher
engine speeds.
Engine Management: The Bosch Motronic system integrates fuel injection, ignition
timing, electronic boost control, idle speed control, and exhaust gas
temperature management within a single control unit. The system includes
diagnostic capabilities.
