The Hyundai G4FG is a 1.6-liter, inline-four gasoline
engine belonging to the Gamma II family, representing a significant evolution in
Hyundai’s naturally aspirated powertrain strategy. Introduced around 2010, this
engine succeeded the G4FC as the premium port-injection option within the Gamma
lineage.
Its defining advancement is the implementation of Dual Continuous Variable Valve
Timing (Dual CVVT), which operates on both the intake and exhaust camshafts, a
step beyond the single CVVT system used in its predecessor.
The G4FG was engineered to deliver a refined balance of fuel efficiency,
drivability, and long-term reliability. While Hyundai concurrently developed the
direct-injection G4FD for maximum efficiency, the G4FG retained multi-point
injection (MPI). This design choice eliminated the intake valve carbon buildup
concerns associated with direct injection systems, establishing the G4FG as a
preferred option for markets and consumers prioritizing mechanical longevity and
simplified maintenance.
Constructed entirely from aluminum alloy for reduced mass, the engine employs a
timing chain rather than a belt, further reducing scheduled maintenance
requirements. Its deployment across a wide range of Hyundai and Kia compact
vehicles, from sedans to sport utility vehicles, solidified its reputation as a
durable and versatile modern powerplant.
The G4FG is a naturally aspirated, water-cooled, four-stroke engine configured
for transverse mounting in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicle
architectures. Its design emphasizes low internal friction, thermal efficiency,
and a broad torque curve suitable for urban and highway driving.
Engine Type: Inline-4, 4-cycle, water-cooled, naturally aspirated.
Displacement: 1,591 cc (97.1 cu.in).
Bore and Stroke: 77.0 mm (3.03 in) x 85.4 mm (3.36 in).
Compression Ratio: 10.5:1.
Valvetrain: DOHC, 16-valve with Dual CVVT.
Fuel System: Multi-point injection (MPI).
Firing Order: 1-3-4-2.
Maximum Power: 91-97 kW (123-132 hp) at 6,300 rpm.
Maximum Torque: 151-157 Nm (111-116 lb-ft) at 4,850 rpm.
Idle Speed: 700 ± 100 rpm.
Engine Redline: 6,700 rpm.
The cylinder block is constructed from die-cast
aluminum alloy, a departure from the cast iron blocks of earlier Hyundai Alpha
series engines. This material selection significantly reduces overall engine
mass, contributing to improved vehicle fuel economy and handling dynamics. The
block features an open-deck design where the cylinder bores are supported at the
top only by the water jacket perimeter, enhancing cooling efficiency around the
upper cylinder area.
Cast-in-place iron-coated aluminum cylinder bores are utilized, with a
high-phosphorus content applied to the bore surface to provide a durable,
low-friction running surface for the pistons and piston rings. A structural
aluminum ladder frame, also known as a bedplate, is bolted to the lower
crankcase to support the crankshaft main bearings, increasing bottom-end
rigidity and reducing noise, vibration, and harshness.
Block Material: Aluminum alloy
Ladder Frame Material: Aluminum alloy
Bore Diameter (finished): 77.0 mm (3.03 in)
Main Bearing Cap Design: Integrated into the ladder frame assembly
Crankshaft: Forged steel crankshaft with five main bearings and eight
counterweights for balanced rotating mass. Connecting Rods: Powdered metal
forged steel, fractured-cap design. Pistons: Cast aluminum alloy with a
low-friction skirt coating. The piston crown is designed to promote high tumble
flow for improved combustion efficiency.
The cylinder head is manufactured from aluminum alloy
and employs a cross-flow, pent-roof combustion chamber design optimized for high
tumble flow, which enhances air-fuel mixing and combustion stability. The DOHC
valvetrain actuates sixteen valves through solid mechanical tappets, also known
as bucket tappets.
Unlike engines with hydraulic lash adjusters, the G4FG requires precise valve
clearance maintained by selecting tappets of varying thicknesses during assembly
or service. This solid lifter design supports higher engine speeds and more
aggressive camshaft profiles.
The Dual CVVT system is the defining feature of this cylinder head. It utilizes
oil-pressure-actuated phasers mounted on the intake and exhaust camshafts,
allowing continuous, independent adjustment of camshaft timing relative to the
crankshaft.
The intake camshaft can be advanced or retarded across a range of 45 degrees of
crankshaft angle, while the exhaust camshaft adjusts across a range of 45
degrees. This capability permits optimization of valve overlap for all operating
conditions, improving low-end torque, high-end power, idle stability, and fuel
economy.
Head Material: Aluminum alloy
Valve Configuration: DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder
Valve Diameter (Intake): 31.0 mm (1.22 in)
Valve Diameter (Exhaust): 27.0 mm (1.06 in)
Valve Stem Diameter: 5.0 mm (0.20 in)
Valve Seat Angle: 45 degrees
CVVT Operating Range (Intake): 0-45 degrees (crankshaft angle)
CVVT Operating Range (Exhaust): 0-45 degrees (crankshaft angle)
The G4FG employs a multi-point injection (MPI) fuel
system, a proven architecture that injects fuel into the intake ports rather
than directly into the combustion chamber. Four high-impedance fuel injectors
are mounted in the intake manifold, each positioned to direct a precisely
atomized spray toward the back of its respective intake valve.
This configuration provides several operational benefits: the fuel spray cools
the intake valves, which prevents carbon deposit accumulation; the fuel has
additional time to vaporize before entering the cylinder, promoting more
complete combustion; and the system operates at lower fuel pressures than direct
injection, reducing parasitic load on the engine.
A fuel pump assembly housed within the fuel tank supplies fuel to a stainless
steel fuel rail. A mechanical fuel pressure regulator maintains a constant
pressure differential across the injectors, referencing intake manifold vacuum
to ensure consistent fuel delivery across all engine loads. The engine control
unit (ECU) calculates injection pulse width based on mass airflow, oxygen sensor
feedback, throttle position, and coolant temperature.
Injection Type: Multi-point injection (port injection)
Fuel Pressure: 324-392 kPa (47.0-56.9 psi) with vacuum line disconnected
Fuel Injector Resistance: 13.8-15.2 Ohms
Fuel Requirement: 87 octane or higher (Research Octane Number 91 or higher)
Fuel Cutoff: 6,800 rpm
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, wet-sump
design utilizing a variable-displacement oil pump, a feature that improves fuel
efficiency by reducing parasitic power loss. The pump is a gear-type unit driven
by the crankshaft via a separate chain. It adjusts its displacement based on
engine speed, oil temperature, and oil pressure demands to supply only the
necessary flow, minimizing energy consumption.
Oil is drawn from the aluminum oil pan through a mesh strainer and circulated
through a full-flow, replaceable oil filter before reaching the main oil
gallery. From the gallery, oil is distributed to the crankshaft main bearings,
connecting rod bearings, Dual CVVT phasers, camshaft journals, and solid
tappets. An oil jet system directs a spray of oil toward the underside of each
piston for cooling during high-load operation.
Oil Type: SAE 5W-20 or 5W-30 (API SM or higher; ILSAC GF-4 or higher)
Oil Capacity (with filter): 3.3-3.7 liters (3.5-3.9 US qt)
Oil Pressure (at idle, warm): 98 kPa (14.2 psi) minimum
Oil Pump Type: Variable-displacement gear pump
Oil Jet Piston Cooling: Active above 2,500 rpm
The cooling system is a pressurized, liquid-cooled
design incorporating a high-efficiency cross-flow aluminum radiator with a
dual-speed electric cooling fan. A centrifugal-type water pump, driven by the
timing chain, circulates coolant through the engine block, cylinder head, heater
core, and an integrated oil cooler.
A wax-pellet thermostat regulates coolant flow to maintain optimal operating
temperature, with a bypass circuit that allows the engine to warm rapidly by
circulating coolant only within the engine until the thermostat opens. The
aluminum block and head combination requires precise thermal management to
maintain consistent expansion characteristics across the cylinder head gasket
interface.
Coolant Type: Ethylene-glycol based phosphate-free antifreeze
Coolant Capacity: 5.3-5.7 liters (5.6-6.0 US qt)
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 82-86 °C (180-187 °F)
Radiator Cap Pressure: 108-127 kPa (15.7-18.4 psi)
Water Pump Type: Centrifugal, timing chain-driven
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Intake System: A two-piece plastic intake manifold with
integrated acoustic resonators to reduce induction noise. A drive-by-wire
electronic throttle body eliminates the mechanical cable connection, allowing
the ECU to manage throttle opening for precise torque control, idle stability,
and traction management.
Exhaust System: A stainless steel exhaust manifold with a close-coupled
catalytic converter positioned immediately downstream to achieve rapid catalyst
light-off for emissions compliance. A heated oxygen sensor upstream of the
catalyst provides fuel trim feedback, with a second sensor downstream monitoring
catalyst efficiency.
Distributorless ignition system with four individual
pencil-type ignition coils, each mounted directly over a spark plug. The ECU
controls spark timing based on crankshaft position, camshaft position, knock
sensor feedback, and engine load. This coil-on-plug design eliminates
high-tension spark plug wires and ensures consistent ignition energy.
Timing Drive: A silent-type roller chain serves as the
primary timing drive, connecting the crankshaft sprocket to the intake camshaft
sprocket. A secondary chain connects the intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets.
An automatic hydraulic tensioner, fed by engine oil pressure, maintains optimal
chain tension throughout the engine’s operational life. The chain system is
designed for the engine’s service life without replacement under normal
operating conditions
