The Opel B14NEJ is a 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four
petrol engine belonging to the GM Family 0 Ecotec series, produced from 2014
through 2019 as a Euro 6-compliant successor to the earlier A14NEL. This
powerplant was engineered specifically as a detuned performance variant for the
fifth-generation Opel Corsa (Corsa E), where it occupied the position between
the naturally aspirated 1.4-liter and the higher-output 1.4 Turbo variants
within the Corsa lineup. The engine’s configuration prioritizes low-end torque
delivery and fuel efficiency while maintaining the compact dimensions required
for transverse installation in the supermini segment.
The engine’s architecture centers on a 1,364 cc displacement achieved through a
72.5 mm bore and 82.6 mm stroke, a long-stroke design favorable for torque
production in turbocharged applications. The double overhead camshaft (DOHC)
valvetrain incorporates dual variable valve timing (VVT) on both intake and
exhaust camshafts, allowing for optimized valve overlap across the operating
range. The timing chain drive eliminates the maintenance requirements associated
with belt-driven systems, while the multi-point fuel injection (MPI) system
provides a simpler, more robust alternative to direct injection, reducing the
risk of intake valve deposit accumulation.
Power output is rated at 74 kW (101 hp) from 3,500 to 6,000 rpm, with peak
torque of 200 Nm (148 lb-ft) available across a broad plateau from 1,850 to
3,500 rpm. This torque characteristic delivers strong low-end response suited to
urban driving conditions while maintaining adequate power for highway cruising.
The compression ratio of 9.5:1 is calibrated for turbocharged operation with
multi-point injection, balancing thermal efficiency with resistance to knock
under boost pressure.
The turbocharger with intercooler provides forced induction across the operating
range, with maximum boost pressure managed by an electronically controlled
wastegate. The B14NEJ was developed specifically for the Corsa E application and
did not appear in other Opel models during its production lifecycle.
The B14NEJ operates on a four-stroke gasoline cycle with turbocharged induction
and multi-point fuel injection. The engine utilizes an inline four-cylinder
configuration with a double overhead camshaft (DOHC) and four valves per
cylinder.

The cylinder block is constructed from cast iron with
an open-deck design. This material choice provides the structural rigidity
required for turbocharged operation while maintaining the dimensional stability
necessary for consistent sealing under elevated cylinder pressures. The block
features a deep-skirt design that extends below the crankshaft centerline,
contributing to overall engine rigidity and vibration reduction.
The cylinder bores are integrally cast into the block with no replaceable
liners. Each bore is induction-hardened to provide a durable wear surface for
the piston rings. The water jackets surrounding the cylinder bores are
configured to provide uniform cooling across the entire height of the piston
travel, an important characteristic for the long-stroke 82.6 mm design.
Main bearing caps are manufactured from nodular cast iron and are secured with
four bolts each - two vertical bolts through the cap and two horizontal
cross-bolts through the lower crankcase structure. This cross-bolted arrangement
provides superior crankshaft support under the loads generated by turbocharged
operation.
Crankshaft: Cast iron with five main bearings, fully counter-weighted with eight
counterweights. The crankshaft features induction-hardened bearing surfaces and
incorporates a torsional vibration damper at the front end.
Main Bearing Journal Diameter: 52.0 mm (2.05 in)
Connecting Rod Journal Diameter: 45.0 mm (1.77 in)
Connecting Rods: Forged steel with a fracture-split cap design
Piston Material: Cast aluminum alloy with anodized ring grooves and a
low-friction skirt coating. The piston crown incorporates a recessed design to
promote mixture motion during the intake and compression strokes. Piston
Cooling: Oil spray jets mounted in the crankcase direct engine oil to the
underside of each piston crown. These jets are calibrated to activate at oil
pressures above 150 kPa (22 psi).
The cylinder head is a single-piece cast aluminum alloy
construction spanning all four cylinders. The DOHC configuration places two
camshafts in the head - one intake and one exhaust - operating four valves per
cylinder through inverted bucket-type tappets.
Valvetrain: Double overhead camshaft (DOHC) with four valves per cylinder,
totaling 16 valves. Dual variable valve timing (VVT) is incorporated on both the
intake and exhaust camshafts, allowing for independent adjustment of valve
timing across a range of up to 50 degrees of crankshaft rotation. Hydraulic lash
adjusters are integrated into the bucket tappets, eliminating the need for valve
clearance adjustment throughout the engine’s service life.
Intake Valve Diameter: 30.0 mm (1.18 in)
Exhaust Valve Diameter: 26.0 mm (1.02 in)
Valve Lift (Intake): 9.0 mm (0.354 in)
Valve Lift (Exhaust): 9.0 mm (0.354 in)
Valve Seat Material: High-strength sintered alloy with induction-hardened
contact surfaces. Valve Spring Material: High-tensile steel with a beehive
design to reduce reciprocating mass and prevent valve float at elevated engine
speeds.
Camshaft Drive: Silent-type Morse timing chain with an automatic hydraulic
tensioner. The chain drives from a sprocket on the crankshaft to the intake
camshaft sprocket, with a secondary chain transferring drive from the intake to
the exhaust camshaft. The chain system is designed for the engine’s service life
with no scheduled replacement interval.
The fuel system is a sequential multi-point fuel
injection system with individual injectors positioned in the intake manifold
runners immediately upstream of each intake valve. This port injection
configuration provides precise fuel delivery while maintaining the simplicity
and serviceability advantages of an external injection system.

design for improved fuel atomization. The injectors are electrically actuated by
the engine control unit in sequence with the engine’s firing order.
Fuel Pressure: 350-400 kPa (51-58 psi) regulated by a vacuum-referenced pressure
regulator mounted on the fuel rail. Fuel Rail: Composite resin or aluminum rail
shared across all four cylinders. Intake Manifold: Composite resin construction
with integrated charge air cooler mounting. The manifold incorporates a compact
plenum feeding four individual runners.
Throttle Body: Electronically controlled drive-by-wire system with a bore
diameter of 55 mm (2.17 in). Idle speed is managed through electronic throttle
plate positioning, with no separate idle air control valve. Fuel Requirement:
Minimum octane rating of 95 RON (91 AKI) for optimal performance; 91 RON (87
AKI) is permissible with reduced output.
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized wet-sump
design with a gear-type oil pump mounted on the front of the engine. The pump is
driven directly by the crankshaft through the timing chain system and
incorporates a pressure relief valve.
