The International D358 is a robust,
medium-displacement inline six-cylinder diesel engine engineered for
agricultural tractors, industrial machines, and auxiliary power units.
As part of the International Harvester D-series engines, it was designed
to deliver high torque at low and mid-range engine speeds, excellent
durability under continuous heavy load, and long service intervals.
The D358 succeeded earlier IH engines such as the D310 and D282 by
providing increased displacement, stronger mid-range performance, and
improved reliability in demanding field conditions. Its direct-injection
fuel system, heavy cast-iron construction, rugged rotating assembly, and
straightforward service procedures made it a favorite among farmers,
fleet operators, and technicians.
The engine was widely used in International Harvester tractors through
the 1970s and early 1980s, where it proved capable of handling field
work such as plowing, tillage, heavy drawbar loads, and PTO
applications. Its simple mechanical design, combined with readily
available service parts, has allowed many D358 engines to remain in
service decades after production. The D358 is regarded as one of IH’s
most dependable agricultural diesels, known for longevity, ease of
overhaul, and resistance to premature wear.
The International D358 is a four-stroke, water-cooled inline
six-cylinder diesel engine. Total displacement is 5,868 cc (358 cubic
inches). The bore measures 98.4 mm (3.875 inches), while the stroke is
129 mm (5.08 inches). This long-stroke geometry enables strong low-speed
torque and smooth operation at working RPMs. The compression ratio is
between 16.5:1 and 17.0:1 depending on model year and regional emissions
specifications.
Power output varies with application but ranges between 90 and 110 Hp
(67-82 kW) at approximately 2,300-2,500 rpm. Peak torque commonly falls
between 370 and 420 Nm (273-310 lb-ft) at 1,300-1,500 rpm. Idle speed is
usually set between 650 and 750 rpm. Maximum governed speed is
approximately 2,500 rpm. The firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4.
The crankshaft is forged steel and fully counterweighted, supported by
seven large main bearings to ensure rotational stability and minimize
vibration. Pistons are cast-aluminum alloy with reinforced crowns and
precision-machined combustion bowls for direct injection.
The piston ring pack includes two compression rings and one oil-control
ring. The connecting rods are forged steel with replaceable big-end
bearings. The camshaft is mounted inside the block and driven by a gear
train, providing long-term timing accuracy without belts or chains.
The cylinder block is cast iron with thick cylinder walls and deep
structural ribbing to minimize distortion and improve vibration control.
The block is fully rebuildable and can be rebored several times during
overhaul.
Coolant passages encircle each cylinder for even temperature control
under heavy load. The crankcase architecture includes reinforced bearing
saddles designed to withstand sustained high torque output.
The cylinder head is cast iron and uses direct-injection combustion
chambers. Multi-hole injectors deliver fuel directly into combustion
bowls in the piston crowns. The valvetrain uses pushrods and rocker arms
actuated by the gear-driven camshaft. Valve seats are hardened for
durability.
Cold valve lash settings:
- Intake: 0.25-0.30 mm (0.010-0.012 in)
- Exhaust: 0.30-0.35 mm (0.012-0.014 in)
The D358 uses a mechanical direct-injection fuel system. A lift pump
delivers fuel from the tank to a sediment bowl or water separator, then
to a fine paper-element filter. The high-pressure injection pump -
usually a Bosch inline pump - controls timing and metering. Injection
pressures are between 250 and 350 bar.
Fuel system maintenance:
- Fuel filters every 250-300 hours
- Injector servicing every 1,000-1,500 hours
- Pump timing checks at major service
- Water separator draining as needed
The lubrication system is a wet-sump, full-pressure design. A
gear-driven pump supplies oil to all major components. Oil pressure
reaches 250-350 kPa (36-51 psi) at working speed and 70-120 kPa (10-17
psi) at idle. Oil capacity is 7.5-9.0 liters (7.9-9.5 US quarts).
Recommended viscosity grades include SAE 15W-40 or 20W-50 diesel-rated
oil.
Cooling is provided by a belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulating
coolant through the block, head, and radiator. The thermostat begins
opening at 82°C (180°F) and is fully open by 95°C (203°F). Cooling
capacity is 12-14 liters (12.7-14.8 US quarts). Radiator cap pressure is
70-90 kPa (10-13 psi).
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Air filtration varies by application. Agricultural tractors often use
dual-stage dry filters, while industrial units may incorporate cyclone
or oil-bath filters. The intake manifold promotes swirl for efficient
combustion. The exhaust manifold is cast iron and designed to withstand
continuous high-temperature exposure.
Most D358 systems use a 12-volt electrical configuration with 25-45 amp
alternators and 2.0-3.0 kW starters. Cold-start aids include glow plugs
or intake-manifold heaters.
Depending on configuration, the D358 can
support:
- Hydraulic pumps
- Power-steering pumps
- PTO systems
- Generator heads
- Industrial belt drives
- Length: 880-940 mm (34.6-37.0 in)
- Width: 580-640 mm (22.8-25.2 in)
- Height: 930-980 mm (36.6-38.6 in)
