The Opel A10XEP is a 1.0-liter,
inline-three-cylinder, double overhead camshaft (DOHC), 12-valve,
naturally aspirated gasoline engine. Introduced in the late 2000s, it is
part of the Opel's "Family 0" / "Small Gasoline Engine" (SGE) series
developed as a modern, lightweight, and efficient small-displacement
powerplant for subcompact urban vehicles. The engine was designed with
cost-effective manufacturing and low ownership costs in mind, featuring
a compact aluminum block, a maintenance-free timing chain, and
electronic throttle control.
While its output is modest, the engine is characterized by a
surprisingly smooth and refined operation for a three-cylinder unit,
with minimal vibration due to a balancing shaft and optimized engine
mounts. The A10XEP prioritizes low-end torque for city drivability and
excellent fuel economy over outright power. It is known for its
reliability and durability when maintained properly, serving as an
economical and practical engine for entry-level Opel and Vauxhall
models. Its design reflects the trend of downsizing for efficiency, even
before widespread turbocharging in the small-engine segment.

Construction: Cast aluminum alloy with closed-deck design for rigidity.
The block is extremely compact and lightweight, designed specifically
for a three-cylinder layout.
Cylinder Bores: Directly machined into the aluminum block using a
proprietary process. The cylinder walls are treated with a low-friction
coating (likely a plasma spray or similar), eliminating the need for
traditional iron liners. This reduces weight and improves heat transfer.
Crankshaft: Cast nodular iron, supported by four main bearings. The
crankshaft is designed with specific counterweights to help balance the
inherent vibrations of a three-cylinder layout.
Main Bearings: Steel-backed, aluminum alloy shell bearings.
Pistons: Cast aluminum alloy with a flat or slightly dished crown.
Features three rings (two compression, one oil control).
Connecting Rods: Forged steel or high-strength powder metal.
Balance Shaft: A single, chain-driven balance shaft is installed in the
oil sump area to counteract the primary vertical imbalance forces of the
three-cylinder design, significantly improving smoothness.
Oil Pan: Stamped steel oil pan.
Construction: aluminum alloy, cross-flow design.
Valve Arrangement: Double Overhead Camshafts (DOHC), driven by a single,
maintenance-free timing chain. Four valves per cylinder (12-valve
total).
Valve Configuration: Pent-roof combustion chamber.
Valve Springs: Single coil springs.
Valve Diameter: Intake: 29.0 mm (1.142 inches). Exhaust: 25.0 mm (0.984
inches).
Valve Clearance: Utilizes hydraulic lash adjusters (HLAs) with
direct-acting buckets. No periodic mechanical adjustment is required.
Camshaft Drive: Single-stage, silent-type roller timing chain with an
automatic hydraulic tensioner and fixed guides. Designed for the life of
the engine.
Injection System: Sequential Multi-port Fuel Injection (MPFI). Injectors
are mounted in the intake manifold. Engine Control Unit (ECU): Bosch or
Delphi digital ECU integrated with the engine management system (EMS).
Fuel Injectors: Electromagnetic, top-feed injectors.
Fuel Pressure Regulator: Vacuum-referenced, part of the fuel pump module
in the tank (returnless fuel system). System pressure is constant,
around 3.8-4.0 bar (55-58 psi).
Throttle Body: Single-bore, drive-by-wire (electronic throttle control).
Diameter 50 mm.
Air Intake: Utilizes a Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor or a Manifold Absolute
Pressure (MAP) sensor combined with an Intake Air Temperature (IAT)
sensor for load calculation.
Type: Full-pressure, force-fed wet-sump system.
Oil Pump: Internal gear (trochoid) type, chain-driven from the
crankshaft.
Oil Filter: Cartridge-type paper element inserted into a housing on the
side of the engine block.
Oil Cooler: Not equipped.
Oil Capacity (including filter): 3.5 liters (3.7 US quarts / 3.1
Imperial quarts). Always check specific vehicle manual. Recommended Oil
Grade: ACEA A3/B3 or A3/B4, or later specifications. Viscosity: SAE
5W-30 or 5W-40, full synthetic or synthetic blend. The specific approval
(e.g., GM-LL-A-025) must be observed.

Water Pump: Centrifugal, belt-driven from the crankshaft via the
accessory drive belt.
Thermostat: Wax pellet type, housed in a plastic housing. Opening
temperature is 88°C (190°F) or 92°C (198°F). Radiator Pressure Cap:
140-160 kPa (1.4-1.6 bar / 20-23 psi).
Coolant Capacity (engine + radiator, approx.): 4.5 liters (4.8 US quarts
/ 4.0 Imperial quarts).
Coolant Recommendation: Ethylene-glycol based, silicate-free coolant
meeting Opel/GM specification (e.g., Dex-Cool or equivalent). A 50/50
mix with demineralized water is standard.
Electrical System: 12-volt DC, negative ground.

lbs).
Engine Oil and Filter Change Interval: Long-life service: Up to 30,000
km (18,600 miles) or 2 years under ideal conditions, as per Opel's
Flexible Service System (FSS). For time-based or severe service (short
trips, cold climates, dusty areas), annual or 15,000 km (9,300 mile)
intervals are strongly recommended. Using the correct low-ash, long-life
oil is critical. Spark Plugs: Replace with long-life plugs every 60,000
km (37,000 miles) or 5 years. Timing Chain: No scheduled replacement.
The hydraulic tensioner and chain are designed to last the engine's
lifetime under normal conditions.
Unusual rattling, especially on cold start, may indicate tensioner or
guide wear. Accessory Drive Belt (Serpentine Belt): Inspect every oil
change. Replace every 80,000-100,000 km (50,000-62,000 miles) or at
signs of cracking. Coolant Replacement: Every 5 years or 250,000 km
(155,000 miles), whichever comes first, with specified coolant. Fuel
Filter: Often part of the in-tank fuel pump module. Service interval is
120,000 km (75,000 miles) or as needed. Air Filter: Replace every
45,000-60,000 km (28,000-37,000 miles) or as indicated by the service
indicator. Cabin Air Filter: Replace every 15,000-30,000 km
(9,300-18,600 miles).
Cylinder Head Bolts (M10): Torque-to-Yield (TTY). Must use new bolts.

45°). Consult manual.
Connecting Rod Cap Bolts: 25-30 Nm (18-22 lb-ft) + additional 60-90
degree turn. Use new bolts.

The Opel A10XEP engine was used in a limited number of subcompact Opel
and Vauxhall models, primarily in Europe, as an entry-level,
low-emissions option: Opel Agila A (Second Generation, 2007-2014): The
primary application. Used as the base 1.0L gasoline engine. Vauxhall
Agila (Second Generation, 2007-2014): Badge-engineered version for the
UK market.
Opel Corsa D (2006-2014): Available as the very base engine option in
select markets for the three-door and five-door variants, though the
1.0L was not common across all trim levels. Vauxhall Corsa D
(2006-2014): Similarly, as a base engine option in the UK. This engine
was less common than the 1.2L and 1.4L Family 0 variants. Its
application was focused on achieving specific low-emission and tax-band
targets in certain European countries.
