The Ford BLFB engine is a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder
turbocharged diesel unit originating from the Ford EcoBlue (Panther) engine
family. Introduced around 2016, this engine was engineered to deliver high
torque output combined with optimized fuel efficiency, primarily serving as a
powertrain for the Ford Transit and Transit Custom ranges.
The design focuses on achieving Euro 6 emissions compliance through the
integration of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology utilizing AdBlue.
A defining characteristic of this engine is its offset crankshaft design and the
use of a timing belt operating within the engine oil, a configuration that
imposes stringent requirements on lubrication quality.
Type: Inline 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel, longitudinally or transversely
mounted.
Displacement: 1995 cc (121.7 cu.in).
Valvetrain: Double Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) with 16 valves (4 per cylinder).
Bore x Stroke: 84.0 mm (3.31 in) x 90.0 mm (3.54 in).
Compression Ratio: 16.5:1.
Firing Order: 1-3-4-2.
Maximum Power: 170 hp (125 kW) at 3500 rpm.
Maximum Torque: 405 Nm (298.7 lb-ft) from 1750 rpm to 2500 rpm.
Aspiration: Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) with charge air cooler
(intercooler).
Fuel System: High-pressure Common Rail Direct Injection utilizing piezo-electric
injectors.
Maximum injection pressure reaches 2000 bar.
The cylinder block is manufactured from Compact
Graphite Iron (CGI). This material provides a significant increase in tensile
strength and fatigue resistance compared to traditional grey iron, allowing for
thinner cylinder wall sections and a reduction in overall engine weight without
compromising structural rigidity under high combustion pressures.
The block is a closed-deck design, enhancing the sealing capability for the
cylinder head gasket. A notable mechanical feature is the 10 mm offset of the
crankshaft relative to the cylinder bore centerline. This offset reduces the
thrust load on the piston skirts during the power stroke, decreasing friction
and mechanical noise.
The cylinder head is constructed from aluminum alloy to
reduce mass and facilitate efficient heat dissipation. It houses four valves per
cylinder arranged in a pent-roof combustion chamber configuration, optimizing
swirl and airflow for complete combustion.
The double overhead camshafts are driven by the oil-bathed timing belt located
at the rear of the engine. Valve actuation incorporates hydraulic lash adjusters
and roller finger followers to minimize friction and eliminate the need for
periodic valve clearance adjustments. The valve seat inserts are manufactured
from wear-resistant materials to withstand the thermal demands of the diesel
combustion process.
The fuel system is a high-pressure common rail
architecture. A high-pressure fuel pump, driven by the engine, supplies fuel to
the rail (accumulator) where it is maintained at pressures up to 2000 bar.
Piezo-electric injectors enable multiple injection events per combustion cycle -
including pre-injection, main injection, and post-injection - to control
combustion noise, reduce particulate matter, and manage exhaust gas temperatures
for aftertreatment regeneration.
The system is integrated with the Selective
Catalytic Reduction (SCR) aftertreatment system, which injects AdBlue
into the exhaust stream to convert nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and
water.
The lubrication system operates with a
variable-displacement oil pump to reduce parasitic losses by matching oil flow
and pressure to engine demand. The engine oil serves a critical dual function:
lubricating moving components and maintaining the integrity of the timing belt.
Engine Oil Capacity: 8.3 to 9.1 liters (8.8 to 9.6 qt) with filter, contingent
upon the specific oil pan or sump configuration. Recommended Oil Grade: SAE
0W-30 conforming strictly to Ford specification WSS-M2C950-A. Critical
Requirement: The engine utilizes a timing belt that runs in the engine oil (“wet
belt”).
This belt is constructed from a specialized elastomer resistant to degradation
in oil. Deviation from the prescribed oil specification leads to premature belt
material breakdown, resulting in belt shredding and subsequent obstruction of
the oil pump pickup screen, causing oil starvation.
The cooling system employs a cross-flow radiator
configuration with an electric cooling fan managed by the Powertrain Control
Module (PCM). The system includes an integrated exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)
cooler to reduce intake charge temperatures.
Coolant flow is managed through a coolant control valve rather than a
traditional thermostat, allowing for precise thermal management that accelerates
engine warm-up and maintains optimal operating temperatures for combustion
efficiency and emissions control.
Coolant Capacity: 10.0 to 12.0 liters (10.6 to 12.7 qt) depending on the
presence of auxiliary heating systems, such as supplementary cabin heaters or
fuel-fired pre-heaters.
AdBlue (DEF) System: The Selective Catalytic Reduction
system utilizes a dedicated tank with a capacity of 21 liters (5.5 gal). AdBlue
is dosed into the exhaust stream upstream of the SCR catalyst based on nitrogen
oxide sensor feedback.
Timing Drive: The timing belt is a toothed belt designed for immersion in oil.
It drives the camshafts from the crankshaft sprocket. This is a
maintenance-critical component with a specified replacement interval based on
mileage or time, requiring the use of specialized locking tools during servicing
to prevent valve-to-piston contact.
Exhaust Gas Recirculation: A high-pressure EGR system routes a portion of
exhaust gases through a cooler to the intake manifold, reducing combustion
temperatures and suppressing nitrogen oxide formation.
Overall Engine Length: 650 mm (25.6 in).
Overall Engine Width: 700 mm (27.6 in).
Overall Engine Height: 750 mm (29.5 in).
Dry Weight: 180 kg (397 lb) without ancillary components such as the alternator,
starter motor, and air conditioning compressor.
Engine Oil Change Interval: Up to 21,000 miles (33,800
km) or 2 years, whichever occurs first, under normal operating conditions.
Severe duty cycles require more frequent intervals. The use of oil conforming to
Ford WSS-M2C950-A is mandatory. Oil Filter: Cartridge-style replaceable element.
Timing Belt Replacement: The wet timing belt requires inspection and replacement
at prescribed intervals. Due to the belt operating in the oil, physical
inspection is not feasible without disassembly. Adherence to the replacement
schedule is critical to prevent engine failure.
Coolant: Specification WSS-M97B57-A2, a long-life orange-colored coolant.
Replacement interval is typically 6 years or 105,000 miles (168,000 km),
followed by every 3 years thereafter.
Fuel Filter: Replaceable cartridge with a water-in-fuel sensor. Replacement
interval is generally 20,000 miles (32,000 km) or as indicated by the vehicle’s
service indicator system. Valve Clearance: Hydraulic lash adjusters operate
automatically; no periodic adjustment is required.
Cylinder Head Bolts: Initial torque: 40 Nm (29.5 lb-ft)
followed by an angle of 90 deg.
Main Bearing Cap Bolts: 50 Nm (36.9 lb-ft) plus 90-deg turn.
Connecting Rod Cap Bolts: 30 Nm (22.1 lb-ft) plus 90-deg turn.
Camshaft Bearing Caps: 12 Nm (8.9 lb-ft) for M8 bolts.
Camshaft Bearing Caps: 8 Nm (5.9 lb-ft) for M6 bolts.
Flywheel Bolts: 80 Nm (59 lb-ft) plus 90-deg turn.
High-Pressure Fuel Pump Mounting: 20 Nm (14.8 lb-ft).
Injector Clamp Bolts: 12 Nm (8.9 lb-ft) plus 150-deg turn.
Oil Filter Housing: 25 Nm (18.4 lb-ft).
Engine Mounting Brackets: 80 Nm (59 lb-ft).
