General Technical Data
The Audi CCTA is a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged
petrol engine from the EA888 Gen 2 family. Positioned as a workhorse powerplant,
it appears extensively in North American and European Audi models from
approximately 2008 to 2014. The engine carries the “TSI” or “TFSI” branding,
denoting its turbocharged fuel-stratified injection architecture. It balances
performance with everyday drivability, delivering a broad torque plateau and a
responsive powerband suitable for compact and mid-size Audi platforms.

Cylinder Block
The cylinder block is constructed from gray cast iron, a design choice that enhances rigidity and durability under turbocharged operating conditions. The block features an open-deck configuration to improve cooling around the cylinders. Cylinder bores are precision-machined with a plateau-honed finish for optimal piston ring sealing.
The crankcase incorporates integrated oil passages for piston cooling jets, which spray oil onto the underside of the pistons to manage thermal loads. The bedplate design uses a structural lower crankcase section that adds rigidity and reduces noise, vibration, and harshness. Main bearing caps are integrated into the bedplate, ensuring consistent bearing alignment.
Cylinder Head and Valves
The cylinder head is manufactured from lightweight aluminum alloy and utilizes a cross-flow design to optimize volumetric efficiency. The DOHC arrangement operates four valves per cylinder, with the intake valves having a larger diameter than the exhaust valves to improve cylinder filling. Valve actuation is managed by roller-finger followers with hydraulic lash adjusters, eliminating the need for manual valve clearance adjustments. The camshafts are driven by a timing chain located at the rear of the engine (transmission side).
The chain drive includes a tensioner and guide rails designed for the engine’s service life. The exhaust camshaft incorporates a variable valve timing (VVT) mechanism, known as variable camshaft timing (VCT), which adjusts valve overlap to enhance idle stability, fuel economy, and low-end torque. The cylinder head houses the direct-injection fuel injectors centrally positioned between the valves, promoting efficient fuel atomization and combustion chamber cooling.
Fuel System
The CCTA employs a direct fuel injection system branded as FSI. A low-pressure fuel pump in the fuel tank delivers fuel to a high-pressure mechanical pump mounted on the cylinder head. The high-pressure pump is driven by a four-lobe cam on the intake camshaft and generates fuel pressure up to 150 bar (2176 psi).
Fuel is distributed through a stainless steel high-pressure rail to solenoid-actuated injectors. The injectors spray fuel directly into the combustion chamber during the compression stroke (stratified-charge mode under certain conditions) or during the intake stroke (homogeneous mode) depending on load and engine speed. The system uses a return-less fuel delivery architecture to reduce fuel heating.
Lubrication System
The lubrication system is a pressurized wet-sump design with a gear-type oil pump mounted in the oil pan. The pump features a pressure relief valve to maintain stable oil pressure across the operating range. Oil is drawn through a mesh screen pickup and passes through a full-flow spin-on oil filter housed in a cartridge-style canister on the engine block.
Piston cooling jets, also referred to as oil squirters, are supplied from a dedicated gallery and direct oil to the piston crowns for temperature regulation. The oil cooler, integrated with the oil filter housing, uses engine coolant to maintain oil temperature. Oil capacity is 4.7 liters (5.0 quarts) including the filter. Approved oil must meet VW 502 00 specification, with a viscosity grade of 5W-40 or 5W-30 synthetic.
Cooling System
The cooling system operates under pressure with a total capacity of 8.0 liters (8.5 quarts). A belt-driven water pump with a composite impeller circulates G12 or G13 pink silicate-based coolant. The system uses a wax-thermostat controlled bypass to accelerate engine warm-up. An auxiliary electric coolant pump, known as the run-on pump, continues circulation after engine shutdown to dissipate heat from the turbocharger and cylinder head.
The turbocharger is integrated into the coolant circuit with dedicated supply and return lines. The main radiator is assisted by a dual-speed electric fan controlled by the engine control module. The coolant expansion tank incorporates a pressure cap rated to maintain system pressure and elevate the boiling point.
Other Systems
Ignition System: The engine uses a coil-on-plug ignition system with individual pencil-type ignition coils mounted directly over each spark plug. The engine control unit controls dwell time and spark timing based on load, knock sensor feedback, and engine temperature.
Turbocharger System: A BorgWarner K03 turbocharger provides forced induction. The unit is integrated with the exhaust manifold in a compact “hot side” arrangement to reduce weight and improve thermal efficiency. A bypass valve (recirculation valve) vents excess boost pressure to the turbocharger inlet to prevent compressor surge upon throttle closure.
Crankcase Ventilation: A closed-loop crankcase ventilation (PCV) system separates oil mist from blow-by gases using an integrated oil separator housed in the camshaft cover. The system directs filtered gases into the intake tract.
Engine Management: Bosch Motronic MED 17.5 engine control unit manages fuel injection, ignition timing, boost pressure, camshaft timing, and emission control systems. The ECU incorporates wideband oxygen sensors for precise air-fuel ratio control.
Exhaust System: A close-coupled three-way catalytic converter is mounted directly to the turbocharger outlet for rapid light-off. Downstream oxygen sensors monitor catalyst efficiency.
