The International DT414 is a high-displacement,
turbocharged inline six-cylinder diesel engine engineered by
International Harvester for heavy agricultural tractors, industrial
machinery, and stationary power applications. A member of the D-series
large-frame diesel family, the DT414 served as the mid-range
turbocharged option between the naturally aspirated D414 and the larger
DT436 and DT466 engines. It is widely regarded as one of IH’s most
durable and torque-rich powerplants, capable of delivering high
continuous power for challenging fieldwork such as plowing, deep
tillage, and PTO-intensive operations.
Built with massive cast-iron components, a mechanical direct-injection
fuel system, gear-driven timing components, and replaceable wet sleeves,
the DT414 was designed for long overhaul life and superior reliability
under extreme agricultural environments. Many DT414 engines remain in
service decades after their introduction due to excellent
rebuildability, strong parts support, and the engine’s proven ability to
operate reliably under full load for extended periods.
The International DT414 is a four-stroke, water-cooled, turbocharged
inline six-cylinder diesel engine. Displacement is 6.8 liters (414 cubic
inches). Bore measures 108 mm (4.25 in), and stroke is 121 mm (4.75 in).
This long-stroke configuration produces strong low-speed torque and
steady pulling power at tractor operating speeds.
Compression ratio varies between 16.0:1 and 17.0:1 depending on model
year and agricultural calibration. Factory Hp ratings typically range
from 145 to 175 Hp (108-130 kW) at approximately 2,300 rpm. Peak torque
outputs fall between 600 and 720 Nm (443-531 lb-ft), commonly achieved
at 1,400-1,600 rpm.
Idle speed is generally set around 650-750 rpm. Maximum governed speed
is usually between 2,300 and 2,500 rpm. Firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. The
crankshaft is forged steel with full counterweights and is supported by
seven main bearings for maximum stability under continuous load.
Pistons are cast-aluminum alloy with machined direct-injection
combustion bowls and reinforced crowns. Piston rings include two
compression rings and one oil-control ring. The connecting rods are
forged steel with replaceable bearing inserts. The camshaft is
gear-driven and located within the block, operating pushrods and rocker
arms with excellent long-term timing accuracy.
The DT414 cylinder block is cast iron with wet replaceable cylinder
sleeves for excellent serviceability. These sleeves allow complete
renewal of cylinder surfaces without machining the block, significantly
extending engine life across multiple overhauls. Coolant passages
surround the sleeves to ensure consistent operating temperatures, even
under full-load conditions in hot field environments.
The crankcase design includes deep structural ribbing and reinforced
main-bearing saddles for durability and torsional stability. Mounting
bosses support alternators, hydraulic pumps, power-steering units, and
industrial accessory drives. The block is engineered for high bending
resistance and low vibration, essential for the long-term reliability
expected from heavy-duty agricultural diesels.
The cylinder head is cast iron and supports direct-injection combustion
chambers. Each cylinder has two valves - one intake and one exhaust -
actuated by forged rocker arms driven by pushrods. Hardened valve seats
ensure longevity in high-temperature turbocharged operation.
Cold valve clearances:
- Intake: 0.30-0.35 mm (0.012-0.014 in)
- Exhaust: 0.35-0.40 mm (0.014-0.016 in)
The head gasket uses fire rings around each cylinder for high-pressure
combustion sealing. The head is torqued using multi-step tightening
sequences to ensure uniform clamping across the turbocharged combustion
chambers.
The DT414 uses a fully mechanical direct-injection fuel system. A lift
pump draws fuel from the tank through a sediment bowl or water separator
and then through a fine-element filter. The high-pressure injection pump
is a Bosch inline mechanical pump, delivering fuel in precise timed
pulses to each injector.
Injection pressures range from 250 to 350 bar. Multi-hole injectors
atomize fuel into the piston bowl. The mechanical governor regulates
engine speed and limits maximum fuel delivery. Injection timing can be
adjusted mechanically and must be checked during major service.
Fuel system maintenance:
- Fuel filters: change every 250-300 hours
- Water separator: drain routinely
- Injectors: service every 1,000-1,500 hours
- Injection pump timing: check each major overhaul
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump type. A high-capacity
gear-driven oil pump circulates oil through a full-flow filter before
feeding the crankshaft bearings, rod bearings, camshaft journals, rocker
assemblies, and turbocharger bearings. An optional bypass filter may be
fitted on some tractor versions.
Oil capacity is generally 11-14 liters (11.6-14.8 US quarts).
Recommended oil viscosities include SAE 15W-40 diesel-rated oils (API CF
or higher). Oil change intervals fall between 200 and 250 hours for
agricultural duty cycles.
Oil pressure:
- Operating: 300-450 kPa (44-65 psi)
- Idle: 100-150 kPa (15-22 psi)
Cooling is accomplished via a belt-driven centrifugal water pump
circulating coolant through block, head, radiator, and oil cooler. The
thermostat begins to open at approximately 82°C (180°F) and is fully
open at about 95°C (203°F). Tractor cooling systems are oversized to
support continuous heavy-load operation.
Cooling capacity ranges from 18 to 22 liters (19-23 US quarts). Radiator
cap pressure is generally between 70 and 90 kPa (10-13 psi). Regular
cleaning of radiator fins is essential for maintaining optimal cooling
in agricultural conditions.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Air intake depends on application:
- Agricultural tractors: heavy-duty dual-stage dry filters
- Industrial equipment: heavy-duty canister filters or cyclone
pre-cleaners
The turbocharger increases intake-air density, boosting power and
torque. Some versions include optional aftercooling (air-to-air or
air-to-water) which further reduces intake temperature.
The exhaust manifold is cast iron and designed to withstand the high
thermal cycling that accompanies turbocharged operation.
Most DT414 engines are fitted with a 12-volt electrical system using a
30-45 amp alternator. Starter motors provide 3.0-4.0 kW of cranking
power. Cold-start assist may include ether injection, manifold heaters,
or glow-plug-like intake heaters depending on model.
Electrical instrumentation generally
includes:
- Water-temperature sender
- Oil-pressure sender
- Tachometer sending unit
- Charging system warning circuits
Depending on installation, the DT414 may
support:
