The Deutz BF6L914C is a four-cycle, inline
six-cylinder turbocharged air-cooled diesel engine from Deutz’s 914
family. This engine represents the culmination of Deutz’s air-cooled
diesel technology, a design philosophy the company pursued for decades.
The “B” designation indicates turbocharged, “F” indicates for
off-highway or industrial use, “6” represents six cylinders, “L”
indicates air-cooled, “914” is the series, and “C” denotes a specific
emissions or performance configuration.
Unlike liquid-cooled engines, this powerplant uses an integrated
axial-flow blower to force cooling air over finned cylinders and
cylinder heads. Each cylinder has its own individual aluminum cylinder
head, a distinctive feature of Deutz air-cooled diesels. The engine
produces 189 hp (141 kW) at 2500 rpm, with peak torque of 700 Nm (516
lb-ft) at 1600 rpm. Total displacement is 6.5 liters (395 cu.in),
achieved through a bore of 102 mm (4.01 in) and a long stroke of 132 mm
(5.19 in).
The compression ratio is 18.0:1. The fuel system uses a high-pressure
in-line injection pump with a mechanical centrifugal governor. Injectors
are five-hole nozzle type. The lubrication system is forced-feed
circulation with a rotary pump, feeding both lubricating and optional
heating systems. An integrated aluminum oil cooler is thermostatically
controlled on heating-equipped versions. The engine dimensions are 1175
mm in length, 720 mm in width, and 988 mm in height.
The Deutz BF6L914C is a four-cycle, inline six-cylinder turbocharged
air-cooled diesel engine. Total displacement is 6.5 liters, equivalent
to 395 cubic inches. Bore is 102 mm (4.01 in) with a stroke of 132 mm
(5.19 in), producing an undersquare configuration that favors torque
development at lower engine speeds. The compression ratio is 18.0:1.
Rated power output is 141 kW (189 hp) achieved at 2500 rpm. Maximum
torque is 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) produced at 1600 rpm. Idle speed is set to
650 rpm.
The firing order for the inline six-cylinder engine is 1-5-3-6-2-4.
Aspiration uses a turbocharger without an intercooler on this variant.
Combustion uses direct injection. The cooling system is air-cooled with
an integrated axial-flow blower. The valvetrain uses overhead valves
with one inlet and one exhaust valve per cylinder, total 12 valves. Dry
weight is not specified in source data but is 700 kg (1543 lb) for this
engine family. The electrical system includes a three-phase alternator
rated at 14V and 55A as standard.
The cylinder block is constructed from grey cast iron with an inline
six-cylinder arrangement. The block features individual cylinder barrels
with integral cooling fins cast into the external surfaces. These fins
increase surface area for heat rejection to the forced air stream from
the blower. The crankcase is a single casting incorporating all six
cylinder bores. No replaceable cylinder liners are used; the bores are
precision-machined directly into the parent cast iron material. The
cylinder block incorporates seven main bearing webs with reinforced
bulkheads. A deep-skirt design extends the block below the crankshaft
centerline.
The block includes a side-mounted rotary lubrication pump. An oil pan
rail is machined on the lower face. Cast internal oil galleries direct
pressurized lubricant to all main bearings, connecting rod bearings,
camshaft bearings, and piston cooling nozzles. The block includes
mounting provisions for the camshaft, which is seated in bi-metal
bearings on the blower side. An axial-flow cooling blower is mounted at
the flywheel end or front of the engine, driven by the crankshaft
through a belt or gear train. The blower draws ambient air and directs
it through sheet metal shrouds to flow evenly over all cylinders and
heads.
Individual aluminum cylinder heads are used for each cylinder, a
distinctive feature of Deutz air-cooled engines. Each head is a separate
casting, allowing independent removal and service without disturbing
adjacent cylinders. This design also provides better heat dissipation
from the combustion zone. Each cylinder head contains two valves - one
inlet and one exhaust - arranged in an overhead valve (OHV)
configuration.
Total valves across the engine number 12. A camshaft located within the
cylinder block actuates the valvetrain. Pushrods transfer motion through
vertical bores to rocker arms mounted on shafts above each cylinder
head. Hardened valve seat inserts are pressed into each aluminum head.
Valve guides are pressed-in bronze or cast-iron sleeves. Valve lash is
adjustable using a screw-and-locknut mechanism on each rocker arm.
The direct injection system places the fuel injector centrally in each
cylinder head. Each aluminum head incorporates integral cooling fins on
its external surfaces. Sheet metal shrouds direct cooling air from the
axial blower over these fins. The cylinder head gasket is a
copper-asbestos or steel laminate design. Four head bolts per cylinder
provide clamping force. The individual head design reduces thermal
stress compared to a single long cylinder head.
The fuel system uses mechanical direct injection with a high-pressure
in-line injection pump. A mechanical diaphragm-type or gear-type fuel
lift pump draws fuel from the tank through a replaceable cartridge fuel
filter. The lift pump supplies low-pressure fuel to the injection pump.
The injection pump is an in-line unit containing six plunger and barrel
assemblies, one for each cylinder, arranged in a line.
A mechanical centrifugal governor is integrated into the injection pump
assembly. The governor regulates fuel delivery based on engine speed and
load, controlling both idle and maximum speed. A fuel shutoff lever or
electric solenoid provides engine stop control. Six high-pressure steel
injection lines carry fuel from the injection pump to the injectors.
Each injector is a five-hole nozzle type, producing five fuel jets for
improved atomization and combustion efficiency. Injectors are installed
in the aluminum cylinder heads and positioned to spray fuel directly
into the piston bowl. A fuel return line routes excess fuel and injector
leakage back to the fuel tank. The injection timing is set manually by
adjusting the pump mounting position.
The lubrication system is forced-feed circulation using a rotary pump.
The rotary pump (also known as a gerotor pump) provides a compact,
high-volume design with few moving parts. The pump is mounted on the
crankcase and driven by the camshaft or crankshaft gear. Oil is drawn
from the oil pan through a pick-up tube fitted with a coarse mesh
strainer.
Total oil capacity is not specified in source data but is 18 to 22
liters (19 to 23 U.S. quarts) for this engine family. A full-flow oil
filter is used, constructed as a paper-type microfilter within a
replaceable cartridge housing. The system includes an integrated
aluminum oil cooler mounted on the engine. The oil cooler is
thermostatically controlled on engines equipped with a heating system,
allowing oil to bypass the cooler until reaching operating temperature.
A piston cooling system directs oil spray via nozzles to the underside
of each piston crown for thermal management. A pressure relief valve
limits maximum oil pressure. The lubrication system also feeds an
optional heating system (coolant heater or cab heater) when fitted.
Operating oil pressure at rated speed is maintained between 345 and 450
kPa (50 and 65 psi). The oil pan is constructed from stamped steel or
cast aluminum.
The cooling system is air-cooled, eliminating all liquid coolant,
radiators, water pumps, and hoses. An integrated axial-flow blower (fan)
is mounted on the engine and driven by the crankshaft. The blower draws
ambient air through a protective screen and forces it through sheet
metal ducts and shrouds. The forced air flows over the integral cooling
fins cast into each cylinder barrel and each aluminum cylinder head. The
fins increase the surface area available for heat transfer. The air
velocity and volume are engineered to maintain optimal operating
temperatures across all cylinders under full load.
Thermostatically controlled flaps may be installed in the air ducting to
regulate cooling air flow during cold start and warm-up. The air-cooled
design provides several benefits: operation without risk of freezing, no
coolant leaks, no water pump failures, reduced weight, and simplified
installation. The engine achieves operating temperature rapidly,
reducing wear and fuel consumption during warm-up. The axial blower may
be clutch-driven on some configurations to reduce parasitic losses when
full cooling is not required.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Air Intake System: Ambient air passes through a dry-type air cleaner
before entering the turbocharger compressor. The turbocharger is a
fixed-geometry unit. Compressed air exits the turbocharger directly into
the intake manifold. No intercooler is present on the BF6L914C variant.
The intake manifold distributes air evenly to each cylinder head intake
port.
Exhaust System: A cast-iron exhaust manifold collects gases from all six
cylinders. The manifold is designed to maintain exhaust energy to the
turbocharger turbine. The turbocharger turbine housing is bolted
directly to the manifold outlet.
The electrical system operates at 12V DC. A gear-reduction starter motor
is mounted on the flywheel housing. A three-phase alternator is
standard, rated at 14V and 55A. Higher output alternators are available
as options. Glow plugs are installed in each aluminum cylinder head as a
cold start aid. A glow plug relay manages pre-heat duration.
