The Deutz BF8M1015C is an 8-cylinder, 4-cycle
V-block turbocharged diesel engine from the 1015 family. This power unit
is designed for heavy-duty industrial, marine propulsion, and generator
applications. The engine employs a 90-degree V8 configuration with two
turbochargers and a charge-air cooler, delivering high power density
while maintaining compact external dimensions. Individual cylinder heads
of grey cast iron with crossflow design permit service on one cylinder
without disturbing adjacent units. Four valves per cylinder (four-valve
technology) optimize volumetric efficiency across the operating range.
The engine uses a mechanical in-line injection pump with a centrifugal
governor as standard, with an optional EMR-2 electronic engine governor
available for applications requiring isochronous control or emissions
compliance. The closed-circuit crankcase breather with vacuum control
reduces environmental emissions. The BF8M1015C complies with EU Stage II
and EPA Tier 2 emission standards. A channel-cooled piston option
(CP-engines) provides enhanced thermal management for high-output
variants.

The crankcase is manufactured from grey cast iron with a deep skirt
design. The block incorporates replaceable wet liners for each cylinder.
Each wet liner is a centrifugally cast alloy iron tube sealed at the
lower bore by O-rings and at the upper flange by a pressed-in copper
fire ring. The V8 configuration uses two banks of four cylinders
arranged at 90 degrees. The block features five main bearing bulkheads
supporting the crankshaft, with the center bearing cap cross-bolted for
additional rigidity.
The water jacket surrounds each wet liner fully. Cast oil galleries run
the length of the block, supplying the main bearings and connecting rod
bearings. A closed-circuit crankcase breather system with vacuum control
routes blow-by gases from the crankcase to the intake system, preventing
atmospheric venting. The breather valve maintains slight negative
pressure in the crankcase to reduce oil seal leakage. The engine block
incorporates an integrated lube oil cooler of the water-cooled plate
type.
The engine uses individual cylinder heads for each cylinder. Each head
is manufactured from grey cast iron with a crossflow design. Intake
ports are located on the inner V-side of the engine, and exhaust ports
on the outer side for each cylinder bank. Four valves per cylinder (two
intake, two exhaust) are arranged in a parallel valve layout. The valve
train is an overhead valve (OHV) configuration with pushrods and rocker
arms. The camshafts are located in the cylinder block, not the cylinder
heads (one camshaft per bank).
Four-valve technology improves volumetric efficiency, reduces pumping
losses, and permits a centrally located injector nozzle. Valve stem
seals are positive-type on all valves. Hardened valve seat inserts on
both intake and exhaust sides resist wear under turbocharged operation.
Valve clearance adjustment uses a screw-and-locknut arrangement on the
rocker arms. Individual cylinder heads permit removal and service of one
cylinder head without disturbing adjacent heads or the cooling system
connections for other cylinders.
The fuel system is a mechanical direct injection design with an in-line
injection pump. An injection pump of the in-line type mounts to the side
of the engine block between the V-banks. The pump incorporates a
mechanical centrifugal governor as standard equipment (option EMR-2
electronic engine governor replaces the mechanical unit for applications
requiring isochronous control or CAN bus interface). A mechanical
reciprocating fuel lift pump draws fuel from the tank.
Single injection pumps for each cylinder deliver fuel through
high-pressure lines to the injection nozzles. Injection nozzles are
eight-hole type (8-hole design) with central arrangement in the cylinder
head, located directly above the piston bowl. The nozzle opening
pressure is 25.0-25.5 MPa (3625-3698 psi). A replaceable cartridge fuel
filter mounts on the engine. Injection timing is adjustable via shims
under the injection pump plungers.
The lubrication system is a forced-feed circulation design with gear
pumps. A suction-side gear pump draws oil through a wire mesh strainer
in the oil pan. Oil passes through a plate-type lube oil cooler
integrated into the engine block. The cooler is water-cooled using
engine coolant. A paper-type microfilter as replaceable cartridge
full-flow filter cleans the oil before it enters the main gallery. A
bypass valve in the filter housing opens at 2.5 bar (36 psi) if the
filter becomes restricted.
Piston cooling is provided by oil spray nozzles. Each cylinder has a
nozzle directed at the underside of the piston crown. CP-engines
(high-output variants) use channel-cooled pistons with an internal
cooling gallery for enhanced heat transfer. The engine oil cooler is
engine-integrated. A pressure relief valve in the oil pump opens at
0.70-0.78 MPa (102-113 psi). Oil pressure at rated speed measures
0.45-0.52 MPa (65-75 psi). Standard oil pan capacity is 40.0 L (42.3 qt)
including the filter.
The cooling system is liquid-cooled with thermostatic control. A
belt-driven centrifugal coolant pump circulates engine coolant through
the cylinder block water jacket surrounding the wet liners, through the
individual cylinder heads, and through the charge-air cooler water
circuit (if water-cooled charge-air cooler is specified). The system
uses a remote radiator with an engine-driven fan. A wax-pellet
thermostat begins opening at 82°C (180°F) and reaches full opening at
95°C (203°F).
A bypass circuit permits coolant circulation within the engine when the
thermostat remains closed. The charge-air cooler is an air-to-air unit
mounted in the vehicle radiator stack for standard BF8M1015C engines.
Coolant capacity (engine only) is 20.0 L (21.1 qt). Total system
capacity ranges from 45.0 to 65.0 L (47.6-68.7 qt) depending on radiator
and remote cooler installation.
Aspiration: Two turbochargers, one for each cylinder bank (twin-turbo
configuration). Each turbocharger is flange-mounted to the exhaust
manifold of its respective bank. A wastegate valve on each turbocharger
regulates boost pressure. Charge-air cooler is air-to-air type.
Combustion System: Direct injection with bowl-in-piston. Piston uses
three rings: two compression rings and one oil scraper ring. Pistons are
oil-cooled via spray nozzles. CP-engines use channel-cooled pistons with
an internal cooling gallery connected to the oil spray jet.
Crankshaft: Drop-forged steel crankshaft with bolted counterweights.
Five main journals. Tri-metal plain bearings (main and big-end bearings)
consisting of steel backing, copper-lead intermediate layer, and
lead-tin overlay.
Electrical System: 24 V negative ground (standard). Three-phase
alternator output is 28 V, 55 A (standard). Options include higher
output alternators up to 28 V, 150 A for electrically intensive
applications. Starter motor power rating is 6.0-7.5 kW depending on
ambient temperature requirements.
Governor: Mechanical centrifugal governor is standard equipment.
Optional EMR-2 (Electronic Motor Regulator version 2) replaces the
mechanical governor. EMR-2 provides electronic speed control,
isochronous load sharing for generator sets, and CAN bus communication
interface. EMR-2 also supports diagnostic fault logging.
