The Volvo B230FB is a 2.3-liter, four-cylinder,
naturally aspirated gasoline engine, representing a late-production,
low-friction variant within the legendary "red block" B230 engine
family. This engine, produced from the early 1990s until the end of
940/960 production, was designed for optimal balance between durability,
fuel efficiency, and reduced internal friction. It incorporates a
revised V-type cylinder head, a fuel economy-focused camshaft, and
hydraulic lifters for maintenance-free valve operation.
The B230FB retains the robust cast-iron block and forged internals that
define the red block lineage, ensuring exceptional longevity and
tolerance for high mileage. Its design philosophy prioritizes smooth,
reliable operation with modest power output, making it an ideal
workhorse for Volvo's final rear-wheel-drive sedans and wagons.
The engine is renowned for its near-indestructible nature,
straightforward serviceability, and ability to achieve extreme mileage
with basic maintenance. It stands as the final and most refined
evolution of the naturally aspirated Volvo red block, embodying decades
of incremental engineering improvements focused on reliability.
Engine Type: Inline-4 cylinder, longitudinal-mounted, liquid-cooled,
naturally aspirated, gasoline multi-point fuel injection (MPFI).
Displacement: 2316 cc (2.316 L) / 141.3 cu.in.
Bore x Stroke: 96.0 mm x 80.0 mm / 3.780 in x 3.150 in.
Compression Ratio: 10.3:1. Firing Order: 1-3-4-2.
Direction of Rotation: Clockwise (viewed from the front/flywheel end).
Maximum Power Output: 86 kW (117 hp) at 5400 rpm.
Maximum Torque Output: 190 Nm (140 lb-ft) at 2700 rpm.
Fuel Requirement: Unleaded gasoline, 91 RON (87 AKI).
Emission Standards Compliance: Euro 1 / US OBD I standards of the early
1990s.
Material: Cast iron. This is the foundation of the red block's
durability, providing high strength and excellent wear characteristics.
Construction: Deep-skirt design with five main bearing supports. The
block features substantial internal webbing. Main bearing caps are
secured with vertical bolts. The B230FB block uses thinner (1.5mm)
cylinder walls compared to earlier B230s for reduced weight, but retains
full strength.
Crankshaft: Forged steel crankshaft with eight counterweights. Main
bearing journal diameter: 64.0 mm / 2.520 in. Crankpin journal diameter:
54.0 mm / 2.126 in.
Pistons: Aluminum alloy low-friction pistons with a domed crown for the
10.3:1 compression ratio. The pistons have a special skirt coating
(Grafal) to reduce friction and noise.
Connecting Rods: Forged steel I-beam connecting rods.
Material: Cast iron. The head is a high-swirl V-type (Volvo) design with
revised porting for the FB specification.
Head Construction: Single overhead camshaft (SOHC), 8-valve design (2
valves per cylinder). The camshaft is driven by a duplex roller chain.
Valve Arrangement: Inline valves with a wedge-type combustion chamber.
Valves are actuated via hydraulic lifters (lash adjusters) and rocker
arms. This system eliminates the need for manual valve clearance
adjustment. Variable Valve Timing: None.
Camshaft: The "FB" camshaft has a profile optimized for low-end torque
and fuel economy, with reduced lift and duration compared to
performance-oriented "FT" or "FK" cams.
Valve Diameters: Intake: 42.0 mm / 1.654 in. Exhaust: 36.0 mm / 1.417
in.
Injection Type: Bosch LH-Jetronic 2.4 or 3.1 multipoint fuel injection
(MPFI). This is an electronic, speed-density system.
Engine Management: Bosch EZ 129K or similar electronic ignition system,
integrated with the LH-Jetronic fuel control. Fuel Delivery: An electric
in-tank fuel pump supplies pressure to the fuel rail.
Fuel Rail and Injectors: Four electronic fuel injectors.
Throttle Body: Single-bore, cable-operated throttle body.
Air Intake: Naturally aspirated via an air filter, air mass meter, and a
plastic intake manifold.
Type: Pressure-fed, full-flow filtration with a gear-type oil pump.
Oil Pump: Gear-type pump, driven by the crankshaft via a short shaft and
gear.
Oil Filter: Full-flow, spin-on canister type.
Oil Cooler: Not standard equipment on this naturally aspirated variant.
Oil Capacity (including filter): 4.0 L / 4.2 US qt.
Recommended Oil Grade: High-quality semi-synthetic or mineral engine oil
meeting API SG/SH or later. Viscosity: 10W-40 or 15W-40. Operating Oil
Pressure: 2.0 bar at hot idle, 3.0 - 4.0 bar at 2000 rpm. Imperial: 29
psi (idle), 44 - 58 psi (2000 rpm).
Type: Pressurized, single-circuit system with a separate expansion tank.
Water Pump: Centrifugal pump, driven by the accessory V-belt.
Thermostat: Wax pellet type, opening temperature 88°C (190°F).
Coolant Capacity: 8.5 L / 9.0 US qt (entire system).
Coolant Type: Ethylene glycol-based antifreeze.
Electrical System: 12-volt negative ground.
Ignition System: Bosch EZ 129K electronic distributor-based ignition,
controlled by the engine management system.
Engine Management: Combined Bosch LH-Jetronic (fuel) and EZ (ignition)
systems.
Crankcase Ventilation: Closed Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV)
system with an oil separator.
Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR): Equipped for emissions control in
certain markets.
Overall Length: 620 mm / 24.4 in.
Overall Width: 650 mm / 25.6 in.
Overall Height: 680 mm / 26.8 in.
Dry Weight: 150 kg / 331 lbs.
Engine Oil Change Interval: Every 10,000 km or 12 months. Severe service
intervals are 5,000 km or 6 months. Imperial: 6,200 miles / 3,100 miles.
Oil Filter Change: Every oil change. Fuel Filter Change: Every 30,000 km
(18,600 miles). Air Filter Change: Every 30,000 km or as inspected.
Timing Chain Service: The duplex roller chain is exceptionally durable.
Inspection for stretch and wear is recommended every 160,000 km (100,000
miles).
Chain guides and the tensioner may require service at very high mileage.
Hydraulic Lifter Care: Use of high-quality oil and regular changes is
critical to prevent lifter clogging and noise. No periodic adjustment is
required. Spark Plug Replacement: Copper-core spark plugs require
replacement every 15,000 km (9,300 miles). Platinum plugs can extend
this interval to 30,000 km. Coolant Replacement: Every 2 years. Belt

The Volvo B230FB engine was used in the final generation of Volvo
rear-wheel-drive vehicles in the 1990s. Volvo 940 (1991-1995): 940 GL,
940 SE (non-turbo), 940 GLE. This was the primary application. Volvo 960
(1995-1998): Early 960 models in some markets as a base engine before
being replaced entirely by the white block inline-six. Volvo 740
(1990-1992): Late-production 740 models in certain markets.
The B230FB was common in North American and European markets. It was
often equipped with an automatic transmission and served as the
standard, non-turbo engine for the 940 series throughout its final
production years.
