The Mazda L3-VDT, commercially known as the MZR
2.3L DISI Turbo, is a technologically advanced, inline-four-cylinder,
turbocharged, direct injection gasoline engine. It was developed as the
high-performance heart of Mazda's "Mazdaspeed" performance line in the
mid-to-late 2000s. A derivative of the standard MZR 2.3L block, it was
heavily fortified and equipped with Mazda's proprietary Direct Injection
Spark Ignition (DISI) system, a twin-scroll turbocharger, and an
air-to-air intercooler.
The engine was designed to deliver a broad, flat torque curve with
minimal turbo lag and high specific output, while maintaining
respectable fuel efficiency under part-throttle conditions. It is
renowned for its robust construction, significant factory tuning
potential, and its role in vehicles like the iconic
Mazdaspeed3/Mazdaspeed Axela. The L3-VDT is known for its potent low-end
and mid-range torque, but also for challenges such as torque steer in
front-wheel-drive applications and sensitivity to fuel quality and
maintenance. It represents a peak of Mazda's forced induction
engineering before the transition to Skyactiv technology.

diameter is 87.50 mm (3.445 inches).
Crankshaft: Forged steel crankshaft, supported by five main bearings.

crown designed for optimal fuel spray from the side-mounted direct
injector. Features cooling galleries fed by oil jets from the block for
piston crown temperature control.
Connecting Rods: Forged powdered metal steel, with fracture-split big
end caps for high strength and precise alignment. Oil Pan: Cast aluminum
structural oil pan, contributing significantly to block stiffness and
reducing NVH.
Construction: aluminum alloy, cross-flow design.
Valve Arrangement: Dual Overhead Camshafts (DOHC), driven by a silent
chain. Four valves per cylinder (16-valve total). Valve Technology:
Intake camshaft features Mazda's S-VT (Sequential Valve Timing) variable

located spark plug and side-mounted fuel injector. Valve Springs:
High-tension, beehive-style springs for reduced mass and improved
high-RPM stability.
Valve Diameter: Intake: 34.0 mm (1.339 inches). Exhaust: 28.5 mm (1.122

direct-acting buckets. No periodic mechanical adjustment required.
Camshaft Drive: Silent chain with a hydraulic automatic tensioner.
Generally considered a lifetime component but should be inspected during
major service.
Injection System: High-pressure Direct Injection (DISI). Fuel is
injected directly into the cylinder at pressures up to 150 bar (2,175
psi), allowing for precise charge cooling and stratified charge
operation at light loads.
Engine Control Unit (ECU): Advanced Bosch or Mazda-specific digital ECU
with dual knock sensors, extensive safety maps, and a factory-installed
boost control solenoid.
High-Pressure Fuel Pump: Camshaft-driven mechanical pump (mounted on the
cylinder head) that generates the extreme pressure for the direct
injectors. It is fed by a standard in-tank electric lift pump.
Fuel Injectors: Side-feed, solenoid-activated high-pressure direct
injectors.
Fuel Rail: High-pressure stainless steel rail supplying fuel to the
injectors.
Turbocharger: Mitsubishi TD04 twin-scroll turbocharger. The twin-scroll
design separates exhaust pulses from cylinders 1-4 and 2-3 to reduce
turbo lag and improve low-end response.
Intercooler: Large front-mounted air-to-air intercooler.
Type: Full-pressure, force-fed wet-sump system with piston cooling jets.
Oil Pump: Internal gear (trochoid) type, chain-driven from the
crankshaft.
Oil Filter: Standard spin-on canister type, located at the front of the
engine block.
Oil Cooler: Engine oil cooler integrated with the oil filter housing,
using engine coolant for heat exchange. Critical for managing oil
temperatures under sustained boost.

each piston to manage combustion heat.
Oil Capacity (including filter): 5.0 liters (5.3 US quarts / 4.4
Imperial quarts).
Recommended Oil Grade: API SM/SN or later. Viscosity: SAE 5W-30 is
factory fill. For high-performance use, frequent high-boost driving, or
track use, a high-quality full synthetic SAE 5W-40 or 10W-40 is strongly
recommended. Operating Oil Pressure: At operating temperature: 294-441
kPa (3.0-4.5 kgf/cm2 / 43-64 psi) at 3,000 rpm.

inches).
Width (over valve cover): 700 mm (27.6 inches).
Height (from oil pan sump to top of intake manifold): 700 mm (27.6
inches).
Dry Weight (engine only, complete with turbo/manifolds): 160 kg (353
lbs).
Engine Oil and Filter Change Interval: Critical. Every 5,000 km (3,100
miles) or 6 months under normal driving. Severe (frequent boost, short
trips): 3,000-4,000 km. Use only high-quality full synthetic oil. Spark
Plugs: Replace with specified iridium plugs every 65,000 km (40,000
miles) or sooner if modified. Ignition misfire under boost can cause
catastrophic damage. Timing Chain: Designed for lifetime service but
should be inspected for stretch or tensioner wear every 150,000 km.
Listen for startup rattle. Accessory Drive Belts: Inspect every oil
change. Replace as needed.
Coolant Replacement: Every 5 years or 100,000 km (62,000 miles) with
Mazda FL-22 coolant. High-Pressure Fuel Filter (in-tank): Replace every
120,000 km (75,000 miles) or as required. Air Filter: Replace with
high-flow, high-quality element every 30,000-40,000 km (18,600-24,850
miles). Clean MAF sensor during filter changes. Direct Injection
Service: Intake valve carbon buildup is a known issue. Walnut blasting
of intake valves is recommended every 80,000-100,000 km (50,000-62,000
miles) to restore power and smooth idle.
Cylinder Head Bolts (M11): Torque-to-Yield (TTY). Must use new bolts.
Procedure: Step 1: Tighten all bolts in sequence to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
Step 2: Tighten all bolts an additional 90 deg (1/4 turn). Step 3:
Loosen all bolts completely. Step 4: Repeat Step 1 (40 Nm). Step 5:
Tighten all bolts an additional 90 deg (1/4 turn) again. Follow exact
factory sequence.
Main Bearing Cap Bolts: 61-66 Nm (45-49 lb-ft).
Connecting Rod Cap Bolts: 35-40 Nm (26-30 lb-ft) + 90-degree turn.
Always use new bolts.

The Mazda L3-VDT engine was used exclusively in high-performance
"Mazdaspeed" models: Mazdaspeed3 (Japan: Mazdaspeed Axela): The primary
and most famous application. First generation (2007-2009) and second
generation (2010-2013) hot hatchbacks. Mazdaspeed6 (Japan: Mazdaspeed
Atenza): The performance all-wheel-drive sports sedan (2006-2007). This
was the first vehicle to feature the L3-VDT engine.
Ford Focus ST/RS (Non-US markets): The European second-generation Ford
Focus ST (225 PS) and the limited-edition Focus RS (305 PS) used a
heavily modified and fortified version of the L3-VDT block and DISI
technology, developed jointly by Mazda and Ford. This variant featured a
different cylinder head, turbo, and internals.
