The Audi CVKB is a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged
petrol engine belonging to the EA888 Gen 3B family, introduced in 2015. Its
defining characteristic is the implementation of the B-Cycle (Miller Cycle)
combustion process. This architecture prioritizes thermal efficiency and fuel
economy by employing a high geometric compression ratio combined with an early
closing of the intake valves.
This strategy delivers the torque characteristics of a larger-displacement
engine while achieving consumption figures previously associated with smaller,
less powerful units. The CVKB represents the "Ultra" high-efficiency variant
within the 2.0 TFSI lineup, balancing refined power delivery with reduced
operational costs.
Engine Code: CVKB

Compression Ratio: 11.7:1
Max Power Output: 140 kW (190 PS / 188 hp) at 4,200-6,000 rpm
Max Torque: 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) at 1,450-4,200 rpm

The cylinder block is constructed from grey cast iron,
a hallmark of the EA888 series for its durability and acoustic damping
properties. It features an open-deck design to facilitate efficient cooling
around the cylinders. The crankcase is a two-piece design, with a lower module
that incorporates the main bearing caps.
The cylinder bores are finished using a honing process that creates a
low-friction surface for the piston rings. A notable external feature is the
plastic oil pan, which contributes to weight reduction and noise abatement. The
structural rigidity of the block supports the high cylinder pressures generated
by the B-Cycle’s elevated compression ratio.
The cylinder head is manufactured from aluminum alloy
and utilizes a dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) configuration with 4 valves per
cylinder, totaling 16 valves. It integrates the Audi Valvelift System (AVS) on
the intake camshaft. This system allows for two distinct valve lift profiles - a
shorter lift for low-load B-Cycle operation, which reduces pumping losses, and a
higher lift for performance-oriented scenarios.
The valve timing is managed by a camshaft adjustment system with hydraulic
actuators on both the intake and exhaust sides. The intake valves are optimized
for the Miller Cycle, featuring specific timing schedules that close the intake
valve earlier than conventional Otto-cycle engines.
The CVKB employs a sophisticated dual-injection system,
combining Direct Fuel Injection (FSI) and Multi-Point Manifold Injection (MPI).
The direct injectors operate at pressures up to 200 bar (2900 psi) and are used
for cold starts and high-load conditions to provide effective knock suppression
and power.
The port injectors operate during partial load and low-load conditions to reduce
particulate emissions and prevent carbon buildup on the intake valves. This dual
strategy ensures optimal combustion efficiency, minimizes particulates, and
enhances the engine’s ability to run effectively under the high compression
ratio of the B-Cycle.
The lubrication system is designed around low-viscosity
oil to reduce internal friction. The system utilizes a variable-displacement
vane-type oil pump that adjusts flow based on engine speed and load, reducing
parasitic losses. The oil capacity is 5.2 liters (5.5 qt). The mandated oil
specification is VW 508 00 / 509 00, which defines a 0W-20 viscosity “Green”
oil.
This low-viscosity lubricant is critical for the operation of the camshaft
phasing and the hydraulic actuators of the AVS. The oil filter is a
cartridge-style unit housed in a plastic module on the engine block. The sump is
a composite plastic component sealed with a silicone bead, featuring a
single-use plastic drain plug.
The cooling system features a split-circuit design that
allows for rapid warm-up of the cylinder head while the cylinder block remains
cooler, reducing internal friction during the warm-up phase. An electric coolant
pump (auxiliary) supports the main belt-driven pump to manage heat for the
turbocharger after the engine is switched off.
The primary water pump and thermostat are housed in a plastic assembly, a known
service component due to the thermal cycling of the material. The system
capacity is 9.0 liters (2.4 gal). The specified coolant is G12++ or G13, a pink,
silicate-free long-life coolant. An air-to-water intercooler is integrated into
the intake manifold, reducing the charge air volume for improved throttle
response.
The ignition system utilizes pencil-type ignition coils
with integrated power output stages. The specified spark plug is NGK PLFER7A8EG,
with a preset electrode gap of 0.7 mm (0.028 in). The spark plugs are long-life
units, with replacement intervals integrated into the major service schedule.
Induction: A single twin-scroll turbocharger is
employed, integrated with the exhaust manifold within the cylinder head. This
design reduces thermal losses and allows the turbocharger to spool rapidly,
contributing to the wide torque plateau.
Camshaft Drive: A low-maintenance timing chain drives the camshafts. The chain
tensioner is hydraulically actuated by engine oil pressure, supplemented by a
mechanical ratchet mechanism to prevent slack during engine start.
Crankcase Ventilation: A closed, multi-stage crankcase ventilation system uses
an integrated oil separator to remove oil mist from blow-by gases, directing
them back into the intake system to meet emission standards.
