The Deutz BF4L913 is a robust, mechanically
governed, air-cooled, turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine widely
used in construction equipment, agricultural machinery, industrial
pumps, compressors, and generator sets. As a member of the legendary 913
engine family, the BF4L913 is known for its exceptional durability,
simplicity, fuel efficiency, and ability to operate reliably in extreme
temperatures, dusty conditions, and remote job sites where
cooling-system failures must be avoided.
Its air-cooling design eliminates radiators, coolant, hoses, and water
pumps, drastically reducing maintenance demands. The BF4L913 is well
regarded for long service intervals, strong low-speed torque, rapid
throttle response, and excellent cold-start performance. The engine’s
modular architecture and minimal electronic components make it ideal for
harsh industrial environments.
The Deutz BF4L913 is a four-stroke, air-cooled, turbocharged inline
four-cylinder diesel engine. Displacement is approximately 4.1 liters
(249 cubic inches). Bore is typically 102 mm (4.02 in), stroke is around
125 mm (4.92 in), forming a long-stroke geometry optimized for
torque-rich performance and fuel efficiency.
Compression ratio: 17.5:1 to 18.5:1 depending on variant. Power ratings
(application dependent): 50–96 kW (67–129 hp) at 2,300–2,500 rpm. Peak
torque: 260–430 Nm (192–317 lb-ft) at 1,400–1,800 rpm. Idle speed:
850–950 rpm. Governed speed: 2,300–2,500 rpm. Firing order: 1-3-4-2.
The crankshaft is forged steel with five main bearings. Pistons are cast
aluminum alloy with reinforced crowns and oil-cooling channels.
Connecting rods are forged steel. The camshaft is gear-driven and housed
within the crankcase for long-term timing accuracy.
The crankcase is a high-strength cast-iron structure incorporating the
cylinder barrels as part of the block casting (dry-bore design). Heavy
cooling fins are integrally cast into the block exterior to dissipate
heat through high-velocity cooling air. Structural ribbing minimizes
vibration and enhances crankcase rigidity. Oil jets cool the underside
of the pistons, supporting thermal stability under heavy load.
The cylinder head assembly is cast iron with direct-injection combustion
chambers. The BF4L913 uses two valves per cylinder–one intake and one
exhaust–with hardened seats and guides. Air-cooling fins extend across
the head to provide uniform temperature control.
Cold valve-lash settings:
– Intake: 0.20–0.30 mm (0.008–0.012 in)
– Exhaust: 0.50–0.60 mm (0.020–0.024 in)
The valvetrain uses rocker arms operated by pushrods and a gear-driven
camshaft.
The BF4L913 uses a fully mechanical direct-injection fuel system.
Major components include:
– Mechanical lift pump
– Primary water separator
– Secondary fuel filter
– Inline mechanical injection pump
– Mechanical injectors (multi-hole nozzle type)
Fuel injection pressures typically range between 250 and 350 bar.
Fuel-service requirements:
– Replace filters every 250–300 hr
– Drain water separator daily
– Injector testing every 1,000–1,500 hr
– Injection-pump timing checks at major service intervals.
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump layout.
Oil capacity: 9–12 liters (9.5–12.7 qt)
Oil pressure:
– 250–350 kPa (36–51 psi) operating
– 100–150 kPa (15–22 psi) idle
Recommended lubricants: SAE 15W-40 diesel oil (API CI-4 or higher).
Oil-change interval: typically 250 hr under industrial operation.
The BF4L913 uses Deutz’s proven air-cooling
system:
– High-capacity axial cooling fan
– Belt-driven cooling system
– Ducted cooling-air shrouds
– Heavy fin structure on block and head
– Oil coolers integrated into the crankcase
There is no liquid coolant, radiator, thermostat, or water pump. Heat
rejection relies on forced air movement and oil circulation.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Air-intake options:
– Heavy-duty dry filtration
– Dual-stage air filters
– Cyclone pre-cleaners for dusty environments
Turbocharging (the “B” in BF4L913) provides improved power, torque, and
altitude performance.
Exhaust manifolds are heavy-duty cast iron designed for long thermal
cycles.
