The Caterpillar C16 is a high-displacement,
electronically controlled, turbocharged, six-cylinder diesel engine
designed for heavy-duty trucking, severe-service haulage, industrial
power units, and marine applications. Closely related to the proven
3406E and early C15 platforms, the C16 features increased displacement,
improved airflow, and heavier-duty internal components. It is recognized
for its outstanding durability, massive torque output, tuning
flexibility, and ability to deliver long service intervals under extreme
load conditions.
Many operators consider the C16 a “million-mile engine,” with numerous
units surpassing one million km before requiring major overhaul. Its
design emphasizes reliability: a cast-iron block with wet sleeves, a
steel-forged crankshaft, robust piston and connecting-rod assemblies,
and an electronically controlled mechanical-unit injector system (EUI).
Compared to later ACERT engines, the C16’s single-turbo configuration is
simpler, more reliable, and easier to maintain.
The Caterpillar C16 is a four-stroke, water-cooled, turbocharged inline
six-cylinder diesel engine. Displacement is approximately 15.8 liters
(965 cubic inches), resulting from a bore of 140 mm (5.50 in) and a
stroke of 171 mm (6.75 in). This long-stroke configuration optimizes
torque at low-to-mid operating speeds, supporting heavy-haul and
severe-duty applications. Compression ratios typically range between
17.0:1 and 18.0:1 depending on rating.
Power ratings:
— On-highway: 475–600 hp (354–447 kW) @ 2,100 rpm
— High-output trims: 625–700 hp (466–522 kW)
— Industrial: 400–600 hp (298–447 kW)
— Generator-drive: 300–500 kW @ 1,500–1,800 rpm
Peak torque ratings: 2,100–2,450 lb-ft (2,847–3,322 Nm) @ 1,200–1,500
rpm. Idle speed: 550–650 rpm. Maximum governed speed: 2,100–2,300 rpm.
Firing order: 1-5-3-6-2-4.
The forged-steel crankshaft is supported by seven main bearings. Pistons
are cast aluminum with steel crown inserts and cooling oil galleries.
Connecting rods are forged steel with replaceable bearing inserts. The
camshaft is gear-driven for long-term durability and timing accuracy.
The cylinder block is cast iron with a deep-skirt design to reduce flex
and vibration. Wet replaceable liners allow complete rebuilding without
machining the block, extending engine life across multiple overhauls.
Reinforced main-bearing saddles and large coolant passages ensure
structural integrity and thermal stability under load.
The cast-iron cylinder head features:
— Four valves per cylinder
— Hardened valve seats and guides
— Pushrod and rocker-arm valvetrain
— Precision-machined combustion chambers
Cold valve-lash settings:
— Intake: 0.38–0.43 mm (0.015–0.017 in)
— Exhaust: 0.64–0.69 mm (0.025–0.027 in).
The Caterpillar C16 uses an electronically controlled
mechanical-unit-injector (EUI) system governed by an ADEM II or ADEM III
ECM.
Key features include:
— Camshaft-driven mechanical injectors
— Electronic control of injection timing and duration
— Lift pump and dual-stage filtration
— Injection pressures exceeding 1,200 bar
Typical service intervals:
— Fuel filters: 250–300 hours
— Injector testing: 300,000–400,000 km
— Water separator drained daily.
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump design. Oil capacity:
40–48 liters (42–51 qt).
Oil pressure:
— 300–450 kPa (44–65 psi) operating
— 100–150 kPa (15–22 psi) idle
Recommended lubricants are SAE 15W-40 heavy-duty diesel oils meeting API
CI-4, CJ-4, or CK-4.
Oil-change intervals:
— 25,000–40,000 km for trucking
— 250–300 hr for industrial applications.
Cooling is provided by a high-capacity centrifugal water pump. Coolant
circulates through block jackets, head passages, turbo housings, oil
coolers, and radiator.
Thermostat calibration:
— Opening: 82°C (180°F)
— Fully open: 95°C (203°F)
Cooling capacity: 50–60 liters (53–63 qt)
System pressure: 70–100 kPa (10–15 psi).
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Turbocharging is standard. Most C16 engines use a single large
turbocharger combined with air-to-air aftercooling (CAC). This
configuration increases airflow efficiency and provides strong transient
response.
Air filtration varies by application:
— Highway: high-flow dry air filters
— Industrial: dual-stage filters
— Marine: water-separating silencers
The exhaust manifold is cast iron; marine variants may be water-cooled.
| Electrical and Starting Systems |
Electrical options include 12-volt and 24-volt configurations.
Standard components:
— 100–150 amp alternator
— 7–10 kW starter
— Full suite of ECM sensors (oil pressure, coolant temp, boost, intake
temp, fuel temp, crank/cam position)
The ECM manages:
— Fuel timing and metering
— Cold-start strategy
— Engine protection
— Diagnostic fault detection.
The engine may support:
— PTO drives
— Hydraulic pumps
— Marine transmissions
— Industrial compressors
— Generator heads
— Remote cooling systems.
Dimensions vary slightly by configuration:
— Length: 1,550–1,700 mm (61–67 in)
— Width: 1,000–1,200 mm (39–47 in)
— Height: 1,200–1,450 mm (47–57 in)
Dry weight: 1,350–1,500 kg (2,976–3,306 lb).
