The Deutz BF3M2011 is a compact,
air-oil-cooled, turbocharged three-cylinder diesel engine engineered for
industrial equipment, construction machinery, agricultural machines, and
mobile hydraulic systems. As part of the 2011 engine family, the
BF3M2011 uses Deutz’s proven combination of air cooling with integrated
oil cooling, eliminating traditional liquid-cooling components such as
radiators, water pumps, thermostats, and coolant hoses. This greatly
enhances reliability in harsh environments, reduces maintenance
requirements, and improves durability in dusty, high-temperature
operating conditions.
The engine is widely used in telehandlers, skid-steer loaders, aerial
platforms, compact construction equipment, agricultural sprayers,
generator sets, and industrial pump systems. Known for strong low-speed
torque, fuel efficiency, compact packaging, and simple mechanical fuel
management, the BF3M2011 is favored by operators requiring long service
life, robust construction, and minimal downtime.
The Deutz BF3M2011 is a four-stroke, turbocharged, air-oil-cooled inline
three-cylinder diesel engine. Displacement is approximately 2.3 liters
(140 cubic inches). Bore is typically 94 mm (3.70 in), stroke is 112 mm
(4.41 in), forming a long-stroke configuration that enhances low-RPM
torque, fuel efficiency, and stable combustion.
Compression ratio ranges between 18.0:1 and 19.0:1 depending on model
variation. Firing order: 1-2-3. Idle speed: 850–950 rpm. Governed speed:
2,300–2,800 rpm. Power ratings (application dependent): 25–50 kW (34–67
hp) at 2,300–2,800 rpm. Peak torque: 150–225 Nm (111–166 lb-ft) at
1,500–1,800 rpm.
The crankshaft is forged steel with three main bearings engineered for
long service life. Pistons are aluminum alloy with heat-resistant
combustion bowls and oil-cooling galleries. Connecting rods are forged
steel with replaceable bearings. The camshaft is gear-driven for
long-term precision and zero timing-belt maintenance.
The block is cast iron with integrated dry cylinder bores. Unlike
wet-sleeve engines, the BF3M2011 uses cast-in cylinders, improving
structural stiffness and eliminating sleeve sealing components. Heavy
cast-in cooling fins allow optimal heat dissipation through forced
airflow. Oil jets cool the underside of the pistons to maintain
controlled operating temperature and reduce thermal stress.
The cylinder head is cast iron with direct-injection combustion chambers
and integrated cooling fins.
It features:
– Two valves per cylinder
– Hardened valve seats
– Guide materials optimized for high-temperature operation
The valvetrain uses rocker arms and pushrods operating from a
gear-driven camshaft.
Cold valve-lash settings:
– Intake: 0.20–0.30 mm (0.008–0.012 in)
– Exhaust: 0.50–0.60 mm (0.020–0.024 in).
The BF3M2011 uses a fully mechanical
direct-injection system:
– Mechanical lift pump
– Primary water separator
– Secondary fine fuel filter
– Mechanical inline injection pump
– Mechanical multi-hole injectors
Injection pressures range from 250 to 350 bar depending on pump setting.
Fuel-system maintenance:
– Replace filters every 250–300 hr
– Drain water separator daily
– Injector inspection every 1,000–1,500 hr
– Injection pump timing checks at major service.
Lubrication is provided by a full-pressure wet-sump system with a
gear-driven pump.
Oil capacity: 7–9 liters (7.4–9.5 qt)
Oil pressure:
– 250–350 kPa (36–51 psi) operating
– 100–150 kPa (15–22 psi) idle
Recommended oil: SAE 10W-30 or 15W-40 diesel oil (API CI-4, CJ-4, or
CK-4)
Oil change interval: 250 hr typical industrial service.
The BF3M2011 uses an air-oil-cooling
system:
– Belt-driven axial cooling fan
– Engine-mounted cooling shrouds
– Oil cooler integrated into the crankcase
– Cast-in fins on block and head for airflow heat rejection
No radiator, thermostat, or water pump is used.
Maintenance includes periodic fin cleaning and fan belt checks.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Air-intake configurations:
– Single-stage dry filter
– Dual-stage filter for dusty conditions
– Optional cyclone pre-cleaners
Turbocharger improves altitude performance and torque delivery.
Exhaust manifolds are cast iron with heat-resistant construction.
Turbocharger lubrication comes from the engine’s oil circuit.
