The Caterpillar C7.1 is a modern,
electronically controlled, common-rail, turbocharged diesel engine
designed to satisfy the rigorous requirements of construction machinery,
agricultural tractors, forestry equipment, on-highway vocational
vehicles, and stationary power systems. Positioned as the successor to
the earlier CAT C7 and 3126 platforms, the C7.1 incorporates advanced
ACERT-derived combustion management, high-pressure electronic fuel
delivery, improved air handling, and emissions-compatible aftertreatment
systems that meet Tier 3, Tier 4 Final, Stage IIIA, Stage IIIB, and
Stage V regulations depending on configuration.
Built around a strong cast-iron block, high-strength crankshaft, and
refined cooling and lubrication circuits, the C7.1 is widely recognized
for its high torque at low and mid RPM, excellent transient throttle
response, strong fuel efficiency, and long service intervals. Its
compact envelope allows OEMs to integrate the engine into compact track
loaders, mid-sized excavators, telehandlers, wheel loaders, agricultural
sprayers, forestry harvesters, gensets up to 250 kVA, and industrial
pumping systems. The C7.1 is valued for reliability, electronic
diagnostics, ease of maintenance, and long overhaul life.
The Caterpillar C7.1 is a four-stroke, water-cooled, inline six-cylinder
diesel engine. Displacement is approximately 7.1 liters (428 cubic
inches). Bore is 105 mm (4.13 in), and stroke is 135 mm (5.31 in),
forming a long-stroke design optimized for high torque output and stable
combustion under high load.
Compression ratio varies depending on emissions tier: 16.0:1 to 17.0:1
Power ratings depend heavily on use case:

The crankshaft is forged steel, fully counterweighted, supported by
seven main bearings. Pistons are cast-aluminum alloy with re-entrant
combustion bowls and internal cooling galleries. Connecting rods are
forged steel with replaceable bearings. The camshaft is gear-driven and
located in the block.
The C7.1 cylinder block is cast iron with parent-bore cylinders and deep
reinforcement ribs. Coolant passages fully surround the cylinders for
uniform temperature distribution and reduced thermal distortion. The
block incorporates a large main-bearing saddle structure for long-term
stability under high load. Multiple mounting bosses allow integration of
hydraulic pumps, alternators, compressors, PTO brackets, and other
accessories.
The cylinder head is cast iron with a direct-injection combustion
layout. It features four valves per cylinder—two intake, two exhaust—for
efficient breathing, reduced emissions, and strong mid-range torque.
Hardened valve seats and guides improve wear life.

The C7.1 uses a high-pressure common-rail fuel injection system
controlled by an ECM. Fuel is supplied from the tank by an electric or
mechanical lift pump, then filtered through primary and secondary
elements before reaching the high-pressure rail pump. Injection
pressures typically range from 1,200 to 2,000 bar depending on load and
emissions tier.

Cooling is provided by a belt-driven or gear-driven centrifugal water
pump, depending on configuration. Coolant circulates through block,
cylinder head, turbocharger center section, aftercooler (if integrated),
radiator, and optional oil cooler.
