Utilizing a relatively simple 2-valve per cylinder head and a wastegate-controlled Garrett T15 turbocharger, it prioritizes reliability and cost-effectiveness over high specific output. The engine is known for its characteristic diesel clatter, robust construction, and impressive durability when maintained properly. It faced challenges with refinement compared to more modern 16-valve common-rail competitors, but it remains a respected and economical workhorse that brought diesel efficiency to smaller Opel models.

Cylinder Head and Valves

Maintenance Data

Engine Oil and Filter Change Interval: Critical. Every 10,000 km (6,200 miles) or 12 months under normal service. Severe service (short trips, cold climates): 7,500 km (4,700 miles). Use correct diesel oil. Fuel Filter: Replace every 20,000 km (12,400 miles) or as specified. Water must be drained from the filter housing regularly (e.g., every service). This is vital to protect the injection pump. Timing Belt: Replace every 60,000 km (37,000 miles) or 5 years. Include replacement of tensioner and idler pulleys. Although non-interference, failure leaves the vehicle stranded.

Valve Clearance Adjustment: Check and adjust every 20,000-30,000 km (12,400-18,600 miles). Incorrect clearance affects performance, economy, and engine smoothness. Accessory Drive Belts: Inspect and adjust tension every service. Replace at signs of wear. Coolant Replacement: Every 5 years or 100,000 km (62,000 miles). Air Filter: Replace every 40,000 km (25,000 miles) or more often in dusty conditions. Injection Timing: Should be checked with diagnostic equipment if performance or economy suffers, every 60,000 km.

Tightening Torques

Cylinder Head Bolts: Two-stage torque procedure. Step 1: Tighten all bolts in sequence to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). Step 2: Tighten all bolts in sequence to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft). Always follow the specific factory sequence (center-out).
Main Bearing Cap Bolts: 80-85 Nm (59-63 lb-ft).
Connecting Rod Cap Bolts: 50-55 Nm (37-41 lb-ft) + 30-degree turn. Consult manual for exact angle; bolts may be re-usable if not TTY.

Vehicle Applications

The Opel A13DTE engine was used in a range of Opel and Vauxhall subcompact and compact models from the early 2000s: Opel Corsa C (2000-2006): One of the primary applications, offered as the 1.3 CDTI. Vauxhall Corsa C (2000-2006): UK market version. Opel Combo B (2001-2011): The van and passenger variant used this engine as an economical diesel option. Vauxhall Combo B (2001-2011): UK market version.

Opel Tigra TwinTop B (2004-2009): The small convertible was offered with this diesel engine in some markets. Opel Meriva A (2003-2010): Available as the entry-level diesel engine in the compact MPV. Vauxhall Meriva A (2003-2010): UK market version. This engine was also used in various Suzuki, Fiat, and Alfa Romeo models under partnership agreements (e.g., Suzuki Ignis, Fiat Punto 1.3 JTD). In these applications, it may have different management and turbo specifications.
