The Audi CCWA is a 3.0-liter, V6 common rail diesel
engine belonging to the EA896 (Gen 2) family. Produced between 2008 and 2012,
this powerplant is distinguished by its smooth power delivery, refined acoustic
characteristics, and robust construction. It utilizes a 90-deg cylinder bank
arrangement and is predominantly paired with Audi’s quattro permanent
all-wheel-drive system.
The engine was developed to meet Euro 5 emission standards, incorporating a
variable geometry turbocharger, a high-pressure common rail fuel system with
piezo injectors, and a rear-mounted timing chain drive. Its combination of high
torque output across a broad rpm range and efficient fuel consumption cemented
its status as a premium option in the Audi model lineup during its production
run.

The cylinder block is manufactured from gray cast iron
with a closed-deck design, providing exceptional structural rigidity and
resistance to bore distortion under high cylinder pressures. The block
incorporates a 90-deg bank angle and features a deep-skirt construction for
enhanced crankshaft bearing support. Cylinder bores are induction-hardened,
eliminating the need for separate cylinder liners.
The main bearing caps are of a fracture-split design, ensuring precise alignment
and increased strength. The block integrates oil galleries for piston cooling
jets, which continuously spray oil onto the underside of the pistons to manage
thermal loads. The bedplate structure reinforces the lower crankcase,
contributing to overall powertrain stiffness and noise reduction.
Each cylinder head is a gravity-die-cast aluminum alloy
component, with a cross-flow design that separates the intake and exhaust tracts
for optimized thermal management. Two separate cylinder heads are utilized, one
per bank, each housing two camshafts. The DOHC arrangement operates four valves
per cylinder via low-friction roller cam followers.
Intake valves are manufactured from heat-resistant steel, while exhaust valves
are fabricated from high-temperature nickel-chromium alloys to withstand
elevated exhaust gas temperatures. Hydraulic valve lash adjusters are integrated
into the roller followers, eliminating the need for manual valve clearance
adjustments. The camshafts are driven by the rear-mounted timing chain system;
the intake camshaft drives the high-pressure fuel pump via a dedicated lobe.
Valve stem seals are constructed from fluorocarbon materials for enhanced
durability under high thermal stress.
The fuel system is a Bosch third-generation common rail
direct injection arrangement, operating at pressures up to 1800 bar. A single
high-pressure fuel pump, mounted at the rear of the engine and driven by the
intake camshaft, supplies fuel to the common rail accumulators located on each
cylinder bank. The system employs Bosch piezo injectors, which utilize
piezoelectric crystal technology to achieve precise, multi-injection strategies.
These injectors enable up to five injection events per combustion cycle,
including pilot, pre, main, post, and after-injections, reducing combustion
noise and particulate emissions. The fuel filtration system includes a water
separator and a diesel fuel conditioner. High-pressure lines are manufactured
from thick-wall steel tubing to contain injection pressures. The system is fully
returnless, with excess fuel returning directly from the injectors and
high-pressure pump to the fuel tank via a dedicated cooler to maintain fuel
temperature stability.
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized,
forced-feed design employing a variable-displacement vane-type oil pump. The oil
pump is mounted within the oil pan and is driven by a chain from the crankshaft.
The pump adjusts its output according to engine speed, load, and temperature to
reduce parasitic losses while maintaining adequate oil pressure for critical
components. Oil pressure is regulated by an integrated control valve.
The system includes a full-flow oil filter with a bypass valve, an oil cooler
integrated into the engine cooling circuit, and piston cooling jets that operate
continuously to manage piston crown temperatures. The oil pan is a two-part
construction with a structural upper section and a pressed steel lower section.
Oil specification is strictly VW 507 00, a low-SAPS (sulfated ash, phosphorus,
sulfur) 5W-30 formulation necessary to protect the diesel particulate filter
from premature clogging and ash loading.
The cooling system is a pressurized, water-cooled
design with a cross-flow radiator and an electric cooling fan. The system uses a
map-controlled thermostat that electronically regulates coolant temperature
based on engine load and operating conditions, allowing the engine to run at
higher temperatures under part-load for improved efficiency and lower emissions.
Coolant circulation is driven by a belt-driven centrifugal pump.
The system incorporates a separate EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) cooler that
reduces the temperature of recirculated exhaust gases before they enter the
intake manifold. The charge air cooler (intercooler) is air-to-air type, mounted
at the front of the vehicle. Coolant specification is G12++ or G13, a pink or
purple-colored, silicate-free, long-life formulation designed for aluminum
components and extended service intervals. The cooling circuit also serves the
fuel cooler and the transmission oil cooler on vehicles with automatic
transmissions.
The variable geometry turbocharger utilizes adjustable
vanes in the turbine housing to vary the aspect ratio, providing rapid boost
response at low engine speeds while enabling high flow rates at elevated rpm.
The turbocharger is mounted centrally within the V of the engine, reducing the
distance between the exhaust ports and the turbine for improved thermal
efficiency.
Exhaust Gas Recirculation: A high-pressure EGR system
recirculates a portion of exhaust gases from both cylinder banks to the intake
manifold. The EGR system includes a cooler, a bypass valve, and a throttle valve
to precisely control recirculation rates, reducing nitrogen oxide emissions.
Engine Management: The engine is controlled by a Bosch EDC17 (Electronic Diesel
Control) engine control unit, which manages fuel injection, turbocharger vane
position, EGR flow, glow plug operation, and emission control systems.
Glow Plug System: Bosch Duraterm ceramic glow plugs with afterglow capability
ensure reliable cold starting and reduced warm-up time. These glow plugs reach
operating temperature rapidly and maintain high temperatures during the
post-start phase to stabilize combustion.
Emission Control: Exhaust aftertreatment comprises a diesel oxidation catalyst,
a diesel particulate filter, and a NOx storage catalyst. The system relies on
precise fuel post-injection to initiate regeneration of the particulate filter
without requiring additional additive systems.

The Audi CCWA engine was utilized across several
mid-to-large Audi models equipped with longitudinal engine architecture and
quattro all-wheel drive.
Its production spanned model years 2008 to 2012,
with specific applications as follows:
Audi A4 (B8, Typ 8K): 2008-2012.
Audi A5 (8T, including Coupe and Sportback): 2008-2012.
Audi Q5 (8R): 2008-2012.
Audi Q7 (4L): 2008-2010.
In these applications, the engine was exclusively paired with either a six-speed
manual transmission or the eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission,
depending on market and model variant. The CCWA variant was primarily offered in
European and select other markets where the 3.0 TDI engine was specified with
the higher power output and Euro 5 emissions compliance.
