The Nissan MR20DD engine is a 2.0-liter,
inline-four, water-cooled, four-stroke gasoline engine developed as part
of Nissan’s MR-series, succeeding earlier MR20DE and older QR-series
units. Introduced in the early 2010s, the MR20DD represents a
significant technological step for Nissan’s 2.0liter class engines. It
incorporates direct fuel injection, a higher compression ratio, a more
advanced combustion system, and enhanced control of valve timing.
These improvements deliver increased fuel efficiency, stronger low to
midrange torque, lower emissions, and improved throttle response. The
MR20DD powers a variety of compact and mid-size Nissan vehicles
including the XTrail, Serena, Qashqai, and Rogue (regional trims). The
engine emphasizes everyday drivability, long-term durability, and
reduced internal friction while supporting modern performance and
emissions demands.
Compared to its predecessor MR20DE, the MR20DD features redesigned
pistons, injectors, cylinder head, fuel system, and cooling management.
The engine is built for a balance of strong torque, reliability, and
thermal efficiency. While not designed for highperformance use, the
MR20DD is engineered to withstand high mileage, maintain stable
performance, and integrate seamlessly with CVT transmissions.
The MR20DD engine displaces approx. 1,997 cc (121.9 cubic inches). Bore
is approx. 84.0 mm (3.31 inches), and stroke is approx. 90.1 mm (3.55
inches), giving the engine a longstroke configuration optimized for
torque. Compression ratio is 11.0:1 - 12.0:1 depending on market and
emissions specification. Maximum output is approx. 140-150 hp at approx.
5,600-6,000 rpm. Maximum torque is approx. 150-155 lb-ft (approx.
200-210 Nm) at approx. 4,000 rpm. Idle speed is approx. 700-750 rpm. The
firing order is 1-3-4-2. Redline is generally approx. 6,500 rpm.
The aluminum block includes castin iron cylinder liners for durability.
The crankshaft is forged steel with five main bearings. The pistons are
aluminum alloy with lowfriction skirts and combustionoptimized crowns.
The connecting rods are forged steel and utilize fullfloating wrist
pins. The bottomend design focuses on reducing mechanical losses while
maintaining strength for highcompression, directinjection operation.
The MR20DD uses an aluminum DOHC cylinder
head with:
- Four valves per cylinder
- Dual overhead camshafts
- Chain-driven timing system
- Roller rocker arms
- Hydraulic lash adjusters
- Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control (CVTC) on intake and
exhaust cams depending on variant
The DOHC layout provides excellent breathing over a wide rpm range. The
combustion chambers are sculpted for direct-injection spray targeting
and efficient swirl. Intake ports are shaped to support swirl flow for
better atomization and knock resistance. Exhaust ports are designed for
efficient heat evacuation and emissions control.
The timing chain is designed to last the life of the engine when oil
quality is maintained. The CVTC system adjusts cam timing dynamically
for improved torque, reduced pumping losses, and emissions optimization.
The MR20DD features a highpressure gasoline direct-injection (GDI)
system.
Components include:
- Highpressure fuel pump driven by camshaft
- Highpressure fuel rail
- Direct-injection multihole injectors
- Lowpressure intank electric fuel pump
- Electronic throttle body
- Engine Control Module (ECM)
- Wideband O2 sensors
Fuel pressure can exceed 2,000 psi depending on operating mode. Multiple
injection events per combustion cycle support improved efficiency,
power, and emissions performance.
The ECM precisely controls injection
timing, spray pattern, and pulse width using input from:
- Crankshaft position sensor
- Camshaft position sensor
- Mass-airflow sensor
- Knock sensor
- Coolant-temperature sensor
- Intake-air-temperature sensor
- Exhaust oxygen sensors
The MR20DD uses a full-pressure, wet-sump lubrication system.
Specifications:
- Oil capacity approx. 4.2-4.5 liters (approx. 4.4-4.8 US qt)
- Operating oil pressure approx. 45-65 psi at 3,000 rpm; approx. 15-20
psi at idle
- Recommended oils: 0W20 or 5W30 synthetic
A crankshaft-driven trochoid oil pump provides pressurized lubrication
to main bearings, rod bearings, camshafts, timing chain, and
direct-injection pump components. Oil jets cool the underside of the
pistons to support high compression and thermal load. A spin-on oil
filter provides fullflow filtration.
The cooling system is a liquid-cooled,
forcedcirculation design with:
- Aluminum radiator
- Belt-driven water pump
- Thermostat
- Electric cooling fan(s)
- Coolant passages in block and head
- Coolant expansion tank
Specifications:
- Thermostat begins opening approx. 82°C (180°F)
- Fully open approx. 95°C (203°F)
- System capacity approx. 6.0-6.7 liters (approx. 6.3-7.1 US qt)
Direct injection engines rely heavily on stable cooling to control knock
and maintain fuel efficiency.
