The Cummins QSB5.9 is a modern, electronically
controlled evolution of the legendary 6BT5.9 engine. It incorporates
high-pressure common-rail (HPCR) fuel-injection technology, an advanced
ECU, improved emissions performance, and more refined operating
characteristics while retaining the mechanical robustness and
long-service-life characteristics of the original B-Series platform.
The QSB5.9 is widely used in agricultural machinery, medium-duty trucks,
loaders, backhoe loaders, excavators, telehandlers, industrial power
units, and generator sets. It offers excellent cold-start performance,
reduced emissions, improved combustion stability, and extended
maintenance intervals.
The Cummins QSB5.9 is a four-stroke, water-cooled, turbocharged inline
six-cylinder diesel engine. Displacement is 5.9 liters (359 cubic
inches). Bore is 102 mm (4.02 in), stroke is 120 mm (4.72 in), producing
a long-stroke design optimized for torque. Compression ratio ranges from
16.5:1 to 17.5:1 depending on calibration and emissions rating.
Power ratings (varies by application):
– Agricultural and construction equipment: 130–220 hp (97–164 kW) @
2,200–2,600 rpm
– Industrial/machinery versions: 100–200 hp (74–149 kW)
– Generator-drive versions (QSB5.9-G): 100–150 kW @ 1,500–1,800 rpm
Peak torque: 500–750 Nm (369–553 lb-ft) @ 1,400–1,800 rpm
Idle speed: 700–800 rpm
Governed speed: 2,400–2,700 rpm
Firing order: 1-5-3-6-2-4.
The crankshaft is forged steel with seven main bearings. Pistons are
cast aluminum alloy with reinforced combustion bowls and oil galleries.
Connecting rods are forged steel. The camshaft is gear-driven for
long-term timing accuracy.
The QSB5.9 block is high-strength cast iron
and includes:
– Parent-bore cylinders
– Deep-skirt design

– Roller tappets and pushrods
Cold valve-lash settings:
– Intake: 0.254 mm (0.010 in)
– Exhaust: 0.508 mm (0.020 in).
The QSB5.9 uses a high-pressure common-rail (HPCR) fuel-injection system
controlled by an advanced ECU. This system delivers precise fuel
