General Technical Data
The Nissan CG13DE engine is a 1.3-liter inline four-cylinder gasoline engine developed by Nissan as part of the CG series of compact and efficient multi point fuel injection engines. Introduced during the early 1990s, the CG13DE powered the popular Nissan Micra and March models as well as several export variants. Its design emphasizes reliability, low running cost, refined operation, and excellent fuel efficiency.
The engine uses dual overhead camshafts, four
valves per cylinder, electronically controlled fuel injection, and
lightweight aluminum construction for both the cylinder block and
cylinder head. These features make the CG13DE a modern small
displacement engine engineered for smooth performance and low emissions.
The CG13DE is known for its responsive throttle characteristics, quiet
operation, and long-lasting durability. The chain driven camshafts
eliminate the need for periodic belt replacement, contributing to low
maintenance cost. Although not a high-performance engine, its balance of
efficiency and reliability suits urban and suburban driving conditions.
The engine became a benchmark for compact car engineering during its
production period.
The displacement of the CG13DE engine is 1275 cc. Cylinder bore measures
71.0 mm or 2.80 inches, and the stroke is 80.5 mm or 3.17 inches. This
long stroke configuration provides improved torque at lower engine
speeds. The engine uses an aluminum alloy block with cast iron cylinder
liners pressed into the bores. The aluminum cylinder head features pent
roof combustion chambers and four valves per cylinder, controlled by
dual overhead camshafts.
Compression ratio is typically around 9.5 to 1.
The engine operates on the four stroke Otto cycle with intake,
compression, power, and exhaust strokes. Firing order is 1-3-4-2. Idle
speed under normal conditions is around 750 rpm. Maximum power output is
approximately 75 horsepower at about 6000 rpm, and maximum torque is
about 100 Nm or 74 lb-ft at around 4000 rpm. Redline is near 6500 rpm.
The crankshaft is supported by five main bearings for smooth operation
and long-term reliability. Connecting rods are forged steel with full
floating pins. Pistons are cast aluminum with two compression rings and
one oil ring. The piston crown is shaped to promote turbulent combustion
for improved efficiency. The crankshaft rotates clockwise when viewed
from the front of the engine.
The cylinder head houses two camshafts, one for the intake valves and
one for the exhaust valves. Each cylinder has two intake and two exhaust
valves for a total of sixteen valves. Valve actuation is through
hydraulic lifters, naturally maintaining zero clearance and reducing
maintenance requirements. The camshafts are driven by a single row
timing chain with an automatic hydraulic tensioner to maintain correct
tension. The camshaft timing is fixed and does not include variable
valve timing.
Fuel System
The CG13DE uses an electronically controlled multi point fuel injection system operated by the engine control unit. Fuel is supplied from an electric in tank pump that sends fuel through a high-pressure line to the fuel rail. Each cylinder has its own solenoid operated injector, delivering atomized fuel directly into the intake ports. A pressure regulator maintains fuel pressure at around 300 kPa or approximately 43 psi above manifold pressure.
The air intake uses a mass air flow sensor to measure incoming air volume. The throttle body is cable operated and contains an idle air control valve regulated by the ECU to maintain stable idle speed. The fuel filter is located in line and should be replaced at regular service intervals. Recommended fuel type is unleaded gasoline with octane rating of at least 91 RON.
Lubrication System
The lubrication system is a full pressure wet sump design. A trochoid oil pump driven by the crankshaft draws oil from the sump through a screen and sends it through a replaceable full flow oil filter. Oil galleries distribute oil to crankshaft bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, and timing chain components. The system also includes oil jets that spray the underside of the pistons to reduce piston temperature and improve durability.
Normal oil pressure at 3000 rpm is around 45 to 55 psi. Idle pressure is around 10 to 15 psi. Total oil capacity including filter is approximately 3.0 liters or 3.2 US quarts. Recommended oil viscosity is SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 depending on climate. Oil and filter should be replaced every 5000 km or 3000 miles under mixed driving conditions.
Cooling System
The CG13DE engine uses a liquid cooling system with a belt driven centrifugal water pump. Coolant circulates through passages in the block and head, radiator, and heater core. The thermostat opens at approximately 82 C or 180 degrees F and is fully open around 95 C or 203 degrees F. Cooling system capacity is around 5.0 liters or 5.3 US quarts.
Radiator construction is aluminum core with plastic tanks. The system uses an electric cooling fan controlled by a temperature switch or the ECU depending on vehicle model. Coolant mixture should be a 50 50 blend of ethylene glycol and water for freeze and corrosion protection.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The induction system includes an air cleaner box with a replaceable paper element, intake ducting, throttle body, and aluminum intake manifold. The intake manifold runners are tuned for mid-range torque. The exhaust system uses a cast iron manifold mated to a downpipe and catalytic converter. Oxygen sensors before and after the catalytic converter provide feedback to the ECU for fuel mixture control. Later versions include secondary air injection to improve cold start emissions.
Ignition and Electrical System
The CG13DE ignition system is electronically controlled by the ECU and uses a distributor with an optical or magnetic pickup on earlier models and distributorless ignition on later variants. Ignition timing is controlled electronically according to engine load, rpm, coolant temperature, and knock sensor input. Spark plugs are standard nickel alloy plugs or platinum tipped plugs on some versions.
Recommended spark plug gap is around 1.0 millimeter or 0.039 inches. The alternator provides 12 volt power with an output rating of about 70 to 80 amperes. The starter motor is a reduction gear type for fast cranking. The electrical system includes sensors for coolant temperature, intake air temperature, throttle position, crank angle, and cam angle.
Valve Timing and Chain Drive
The timing chain drives both camshafts through sprockets and a tensioner mechanism. Chain lubrication is provided by pressurized engine oil. The tensioner uses hydraulic pressure and spring force to maintain correct chain tension automatically. Service life of the timing chain is typically the life of the engine if oil changes are performed regularly. Timing marks on the sprockets and chain assist with maintenance and overhaul procedures.
Other Systems
The engine includes a positive crankcase ventilation system using a PCV valve that routes crankcase vapors into the intake manifold. The evaporative emissions system captures fuel vapors in a charcoal canister and purges them into the intake during normal driving. Some versions include EGR systems for reduced nitrogen oxide emissions. Sensors throughout the engine allow the ECU to adjust fuel mixture, ignition timing, and idle air control for optimal performance.
Dimensions and Weight
The CG13DE engine is compact and lightweight. Overall length is around 550 mm or 21.6 inches. Width is approximately 500 mm or 19.7 inches. Height is about 600 mm or 23.6 inches. Dry weight is around 90 to 100 kg or roughly 198 to 220 lbs depending on accessory configuration. The compact size allows installation in small front wheel drive platforms while maintaining good service accessibility.
Maintenance Data
Engine oil and filter should be replaced every 5000 km or 3000 miles for best longevity. Air filter replacement is recommended every 20000 km or 12000 miles. Fuel filter replacement interval is around 40000 km or 25000 miles. Spark plugs should be inspected at every service and replaced every 30000 km or 18000 miles depending on plug type.
Cooling system should be flushed and refilled every two years. Drive belts should be inspected at each service interval. Timing chain does not require routine replacement but should be inspected for noise or wear at high mileage.
Compression pressure when new is around 180 to 200 psi. Minimum allowable compression is around 150 psi. Cylinder to cylinder variation should not exceed 10 percent. Idle speed should be approximately 750 rpm.
Ignition timing is controlled by ECU and not normally adjustable except on early distributor based systems. Emission control devices such as the catalytic converter and oxygen sensors should be monitored for proper operation.
Tightening Torques
Cylinder head bolts should be tightened in multiple stages to approximately 70 Nm or 52 lb-ft followed by angle tightening where specified. Main bearing cap bolts torque to around 55 Nm or 41 lb-ft. Connecting rod bolts require around 30 Nm or 22 lb-ft.
Flywheel bolts torque to about 75 Nm or 55 lb-ft. Intake manifold bolts require about 22 Nm or 16 lb-ft. Exhaust manifold nuts require around 28 Nm or 21 lb-ft. Spark plugs tighten to about 18 Nm or 13 lb-ft. Oil drain plug torque is around 35 Nm or 26 lb-ft.
Vehicle Applications
The CG13DE engine was used primarily in the Nissan Micra or March K11 series. It also powered variants of the Nissan Cube, Nissan Verita, and some export models. The engine's compact size, fuel efficiency, and reliability made it ideal for city cars and small hatchbacks. Its smooth operation and low maintenance cost contributed to the popularity of the vehicles it powered.
