The Volvo B4204T23 engine is a high-output,
turbocharged and direct-injected inline-four cylinder gasoline
powerplant from Volvo's final generation of modular engines. This
engine, commonly branded as the T5 in later applications, was engineered
to provide substantial power and torque from a compact displacement,
replacing larger naturally aspirated six-cylinder engines. Introduced in
the early 2010s, it incorporates key technologies including direct fuel
injection, dual variable valve timing (CVVT on intake and exhaust
camshafts), and a high-efficiency turbocharger.
The engine uses a robust aluminum alloy cylinder block with cast iron
liners and an aluminum cylinder head. The B4204T23 is characterized by a
powerful and flat torque curve, providing strong low-end and mid-range
acceleration. It served as a primary powertrain across Volvo's P3 and
early SPA platforms, delivering a blend of performance and efficiency
that defined Volvo's transition towards forced-induction four-cylinder
engines.

The cylinder block is a high-pressure die-cast aluminum alloy unit. This
construction provides a significant weight reduction while maintaining
structural integrity. The cylinder bores are fitted with pressed-in grey
cast iron liners, offering a durable and thermally stable running
surface. The block is a closed-deck design, which provides maximum
rigidity to contain the high combustion pressures generated by
turbocharging and the 10.8:1 compression ratio. The crankshaft is
supported by five main bearings.
The crankshaft is a forged steel component, extensively counterweighted
for smooth operation at high power outputs. Main bearing caps are made
from nodular cast iron and secured with two vertical bolts each.
Connecting rods are forged from high-strength steel. Pistons are
aluminum alloy, featuring a specific crown design with valve pockets and
a slight bowl to manage the direct injection fuel spray and achieve the
target compression ratio. Each piston is cooled by dedicated oil spray
jets.
The cylinder head is a cast aluminum alloy unit. It employs a dual
overhead camshaft (DOHC) layout, with each camshaft operating sixteen
valves (four valves per cylinder). Valve actuation is via roller finger
followers with hydraulic lash adjusters, ensuring zero-maintenance valve
clearance. Continuous Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) is implemented on
both the intake and exhaust camshafts.
This dual independent system allows for a wide range of valve timing
overlap and retard/advance strategies, optimizing volumetric efficiency,
reducing turbo lag, and improving emissions control. The camshafts are
driven by a silent timing chain. Intake valves have a diameter suitable
for high airflow. Exhaust valves feature sodium-filled stems to manage
the elevated exhaust temperatures from turbocharging and direct
injection. The cylinder head integrates the mounting for the
high-pressure fuel pump and the direct injectors.
The fuel system is a direct gasoline injection (DI) setup. This is a
central feature, where fuel is injected at high pressure directly into
the combustion chamber. A camshaft-driven, mechanical high-pressure fuel
pump (HPFP) generates fuel rail pressures exceeding 150 bar (2175 psi).
The system is managed by a Bosch engine control unit. The direct
injectors are side-mounted in the combustion chamber.
This injection strategy allows for more precise fuel metering, improved
charge cooling (which permits the high compression ratio), and reduced
fuel consumption. The system operates in homogeneous mode for most
conditions. A low-pressure electric fuel pump in the tank supplies the
HPFP. The ECU integrates signals from multiple sensors, including a
wide-band lambda sensor and dual knock sensors, for precise control of
injection timing, duration, and ignition timing.
The lubrication system is a pressure-fed, full-flow filtration wet-sump
design. It utilizes a variable-displacement vane-type oil pump. This
pump modulates its output to match engine demand, reducing parasitic
drag and improving fuel efficiency. The oil pan is constructed from
stamped steel or aluminum, depending on the application. Oil is drawn
through a pickup screen, pressurized, and routed through a full-flow
cartridge-style oil filter.
From the filter housing, oil feeds the main gallery. It supplies the
crankshaft main and connecting rod bearings, the cylinder head for
camshaft and valvetrain lubrication, the dual CVVT actuators, the timing
chain tensioner, and the turbocharger center bearing. The turbocharger
receives oil via a dedicated feed line and drains back through a
large-bore return line. An oil cooler is integrated into the system.
The cooling system is a pressurized, forced-circulation design with
specific enhancements for turbocharging and high output. A centrifugal
water pump is driven by the timing chain. An auxiliary electric coolant
pump may circulate coolant through the turbocharger after shutdown to
manage heat soak. The thermostat is electronically controlled for
precise thermal management. A large front-mounted air-to-air intercooler
cools the compressed intake charge.
The ignition system is a coil-on-plug design. The turbocharger is a
single-scroll unit with an internal wastegate, designed for rapid
spool-up and a broad efficiency range. The engine employs both a
low-pressure and high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system
for emissions control. A vacuum pump, driven by the intake camshaft,
supplies brake servo assistance.
The external dimensions of the B4204T23 are compact for its output, a
result of the inline-four configuration and efficient packaging of the
turbocharger and intercooler components. Approximate length is 600 mm
(23.62 inches). Approximate width is 700 mm (27.56 inches). Approximate
height is 650 mm (25.59 inches). These dimensions include the
turbocharger assembly and intake manifold. The weight of a complete
B4204T23 engine, with all fluids and standard accessories, is
approximately 140 kg (309 lbs). The extensive use of aluminum alloys
achieves a favorable power-to-weight ratio.
Engine oil and filter change intervals are dictated by Volvo's Condition
Based Service (CBS) system. Under normal conditions, intervals can
extend to 15,000 km (9,321 miles) or 12 months. For severe service, more
frequent changes are advisable. The timing chain and guides are designed
for longevity but should be inspected for wear or stretching after
200,000 km (124,274 miles). Spark plug replacement is required every
60,000 km (37,282 miles) or 4 years, using specific iridium plugs.
The accessory drive belt should be inspected every 60,000 km. Coolant
replacement is recommended every 240,000 km (149,129 miles) or 10 years.
The direct injection system is susceptible to carbon deposit buildup on
intake valves; periodic inspection and cleaning may be necessary after
80,000-100,000 km (50,000-62,000 miles). The engine air filter should be
replaced every 60,000 km.
All torque values are for clean, lightly oiled threads. Cylinder head
bolts are tightened in a multi-stage angular torque procedure: initial
torque 40 Nm (30 lb-ft), followed by an additional 90-degree turn, and a
final 90-degree turn. Main bearing cap bolts: 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) plus an
additional 50-degree turn.
Connecting rod cap bolts: 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) plus an additional 85-degree
turn. Crankshaft pulley bolt: 120 Nm (89 lb-ft) plus an additional
90-degree angle. Camshaft sprocket bolts: 55 Nm (41 lb-ft). Spark plugs:
20 Nm (15 lb-ft). High-pressure fuel pump mounting bolts: 25 Nm (18
lb-ft). Oil drain plug: 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
The Volvo B4204T23 engine, marketed predominantly as the T5, saw
extensive application across Volvo's P3 platform and early SPA platform
vehicles from approximately 2010 to 2018. Primary applications include:
Volvo S60 (second generation, P3 platform). Volvo V60 (first generation,
P3 platform). Volvo XC60 (first generation, P3 platform and early SPA).
Volvo V70 (third generation, P3 platform). Volvo XC70 (second
generation, P3 platform). Volvo S80 (second generation, P3 platform).
It also powered early versions of the new SPA platform cars: Volvo S90,
V90, and XC90 (as the T5 variant). This engine was central to Volvo's
powertrain strategy, offering near-six-cylinder performance from a
four-cylinder unit. It was eventually succeeded and supplemented by the
newer, more efficient four-cylinder Drive-E engine family, which further
refined turbocharging and direct injection technology.
