General Technical Data
The Mitsubishi 4J10 is a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder, four-stroke, water-cooled gasoline engine that forms part of Mitsubishi’s modern lightweight engine series designed for efficiency and emissions compliance. It was introduced in 2012 as a replacement for the older 4B10 and 4G93 engines, serving in compact and mid-size passenger vehicles such as the Lancer, ASX (RVR), and Outlander.
The 4J10 integrates Mitsubishi’s advanced MIVEC
(Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control) system applied
to both intake and exhaust camshafts, variable geometry intake
manifolding, and a balance of smoothness, power, and reduced friction.
The engine complies with Euro 4 and later Euro 5 emission standards
depending on configuration.
Developed to improve real-world economy, emissions, and drivability, the
4J10 features lightweight aluminum construction for both the cylinder
block and head, chain-driven dual overhead camshafts, and electronically
managed fuel and ignition systems. In later ASandG (Auto Stop and Go)
variants, the engine incorporates automatic start-stop technology for
further reduction in fuel consumption during urban driving. Both
versions emphasize durability, refined operation, and ease of
maintenance while providing adequate performance for daily use.
The Mitsubishi 4J10 has a displacement of 1,798 cc (109.8 cubic inches),
achieved by a bore of 86.0 mm (3.39 inches) and a stroke of 77.4 mm
(3.05 inches). The compression ratio is 10.7:1 for the standard MIVEC
version and 11.0:1 for the ASandG version. It operates on the
four-stroke Otto cycle with DOHC and four valves per cylinder. The
firing order is 1–3–4–2. The crankshaft rotates clockwise when viewed
from the front.
The maximum power output is approximately 102 kW (138 horsepower, 136
bhp) at 6,000 rpm, with peak torque of 172 Nm (127 lb-ft) at 4,200 rpm
for the MIVEC version. The ASandG version provides similar peak power
but optimized torque and improved fuel efficiency due to stop-start
operation and reduced parasitic losses. The idle speed is electronically
maintained at 700 ±50 rpm. The redline is approximately 6,500 rpm, with
fuel cut-off near 6,800 rpm. The engine meets emission regulations using
an integrated three-way catalytic converter, oxygen sensors, and
evaporative emission control.
The cylinder block is cast from high-strength aluminum alloy with
cast-iron cylinder liners for wear resistance. The crankshaft is forged
steel, running in five main bearings with fully floating pistons
connected by lightweight forged steel connecting rods. Pistons are
aluminum alloy with low-friction coatings and reduced skirt area to
minimize drag. The camshafts are chain-driven using a single-row silent
roller chain with a hydraulic tensioner for maintenance-free operation.
Valve actuation is by direct tappet type with hydraulic lash adjusters
eliminating periodic valve clearance adjustments.
The aluminum alloy cylinder head houses two overhead camshafts operating
four valves per cylinder. The intake valve diameter is approximately 33
mm (1.30 inches), and exhaust valves measure 28 mm (1.10 inches). The
MIVEC system provides continuous variable timing on both intake and
exhaust camshafts using oil-pressure-controlled actuators commanded by
the ECU.
This allows the valve overlap and timing to vary across the rpm range, optimizing torque, power, and emissions. The combustion chamber is compact and pent-roof shaped with centrally located spark plugs for efficient flame propagation. Iridium-tipped spark plugs are used for durability and consistent ignition performance.
Fuel System
The 4J10 employs an electronic multi-point sequential fuel injection system controlled by the engine ECU. Each injector is mounted at the intake port and delivers finely atomized fuel directly toward the intake valve. Fuel pressure is regulated at approximately 350 kPa (51 psi) via an electronically controlled return-less fuel rail system. The in-tank electric fuel pump delivers fuel through a high-pressure line and integrated filter element.
The system utilizes closed-loop control via dual oxygen sensors for
precise air-fuel ratio management under all operating conditions. Fuel
delivery, ignition timing, and idle control are continuously adapted
through sensor feedback including mass air flow (MAF), manifold pressure
(MAP), throttle position, coolant temperature, and crankshaft position
sensors.
Fuel used is unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of at least 95 RON
(91 AKI). Fuel economy is improved through lean-burn strategies under
low-load conditions. For the ASandG version, the fuel system is
integrated with the start-stop module that maintains fuel pressure even
during engine shutdown, allowing instant restart without priming delay.
The fuel filter is part of the in-tank assembly and typically
maintenance-free for the life of the vehicle.
Lubrication System
The 4J10 features a fully pressurized wet-sump lubrication system with a trochoid-type oil pump driven directly by the crankshaft. Oil is drawn through a strainer, pressurized, and distributed to the crankshaft, connecting rods, camshafts, and valvetrain through internal oil galleries. Piston cooling jets spray oil to the underside of the pistons for temperature control and knock resistance. Oil pressure at 3,000 rpm is approximately 400 kPa (58 psi).
The total oil capacity with filter change is approximately 4.0 liters
(4.2 US quarts, 3.5 Imperial quarts). Recommended oil type is SAE 0W-20
or 5W-30 meeting API SN or higher specifications. The ASandG version
uses low-friction oil and a variable-displacement oil pump to reduce
parasitic losses and improve efficiency.
A full-flow spin-on oil filter is mounted on the engine block. The
positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system ensures blow-by gases are
recirculated to the intake for emission control. Oil change interval is
every 10,000 km (6,000 miles) or 6 months under normal service, and
every 5,000 km (3,000 miles) under severe conditions. The oil filter is
replaced at each oil change.
Cooling System
The cooling system is of the pressurized, forced-circulation type with a
belt-driven centrifugal water pump. Coolant flows through the block,
cylinder head, radiator, and heater core in a closed circuit. The
thermostat begins to open at approximately 82°C (180°F) and is fully
open by 95°C (203°F). The system includes an aluminum radiator, electric
cooling fan controlled by the ECU, and an expansion tank for overflow.
Coolant pressure cap rating is approximately 108 kPa (15.6 psi).
The coolant capacity is around 6.3 liters (6.7 US quarts, 5.5 Imperial
quarts). The recommended coolant is a 50/50 mixture of long-life
ethylene glycol-based antifreeze and distilled water, providing freeze
protection down to –35°C (–31°F). The coolant replacement interval is
every 160,000 km (100,000 miles) or 5 years. Temperature sensors monitor
engine heat for fan activation and ECU correction of ignition timing and
fuel delivery.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
Air induction begins through a plastic air cleaner housing with a replaceable dry paper filter element. The intake manifold is a composite resin unit with variable-length runners to optimize torque across the rev range. An electronically controlled throttle body (ETCS) governs airflow under ECU command.
The exhaust manifold is made of high-temperature steel and integrates the catalytic converter close to the cylinder head for quick light-off and efficient emission control. Oxygen sensors are fitted before and after the catalyst for precise mixture control. A secondary air injection system operates during cold starts to promote rapid catalyst heating.
Ignition and Electrical System
The ignition system is a direct coil-on-plug design with four individual coils controlled by the ECU. Spark plugs are iridium type, gapped to 1.0 millimeter (0.039 inch). The alternator output is 90 to 100 amperes at 14 volts. The starter motor for the ASandG version is reinforced for high cycle durability, with an integrated reduction gear and quick engagement mechanism.
The electrical system operates on a 12-volt negative-ground configuration, with battery capacity typically between 45 and 60 ampere-hours. The ECU integrates ignition, fuel injection, MIVEC, idle control, and start-stop logic.
Valve Timing and Drive Mechanism
Camshafts are driven by a single-row roller chain with an automatic hydraulic tensioner. The timing chain is designed for the life of the engine under normal service. Chain guides minimize vibration and noise.
The MIVEC actuators on both camshafts use pressurized engine oil controlled by solenoid valves under ECU command, varying the phase angle by up to 35 degrees of crankshaft rotation. This enables smooth torque delivery at low speed and increased power at high rpm. The system also assists in reducing internal EGR during part-throttle operation to improve economy and emissions.
Other Systems
The engine integrates an evaporative emission control (EVAP) system, an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve in certain markets, and an electronically managed idle air system within the throttle body. The ASandG variant adds a reinforced starter, upgraded alternator with energy recuperation control, and a secondary battery monitoring unit.
The ECU coordinates all subsystems through CAN communication with the vehicle’s body control module. The engine complies with OBD-II diagnostics, providing fault memory for sensors, misfire detection, and catalyst efficiency monitoring.
Dimensions and Weight
The overall dimensions of the 4J10 engine are approximately: length 620 mm (24.4 inches), width 640 mm (25.2 inches), and height 680 mm (26.8 inches). The dry weight is approximately 135 kg (298 lbs) for the MIVEC version and about 138 kg (304 lbs) for the ASandG variant due to added components for the stop-start system. Compact dimensions and transverse installation make the engine suitable for front-wheel-drive configurations. Engine mounts are rubber-isolated, with hydraulic damping mounts used in some applications to reduce noise and vibration transmission.
Maintenance Data
Engine oil and filter are replaced every 10,000 km (6,000 miles). Air filter element is renewed every 20,000 km (12,000 miles) or cleaned periodically in dusty conditions. Spark plugs are inspected every 30,000 km (18,000 miles) and replaced every 100,000 km (62,000 miles). Coolant is replaced every 160,000 km (100,000 miles) or five years.
The drive belt for accessories is inspected every 40,000 km (25,000
