The Volvo B4194T engine is a turbocharged,
low-pressure inline-four cylinder gasoline powerplant from Volvo's
modular engine family. Introduced in the early 2000s, this 1.9-liter
engine was engineered to deliver a significant increase in torque and
power over naturally aspirated four-cylinder units while maintaining
respectable fuel economy. It is a dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) design
with four valves per cylinder and incorporates variable valve timing
(CVVT) on the intake camshaft.
The engine uses an aluminum alloy cylinder block with cast iron liners
and an aluminum cylinder head. Its defining characteristic is the
inclusion of a small BorgWarner turbocharger operating at modest boost
pressures, providing strong low-end and mid-range response without the
pronounced lag of earlier high-pressure turbo engines. The B4194T served
as a refined and accessible turbocharged option for Volvo's compact and
mid-size front-wheel-drive models, offering a balanced compromise
between performance and efficiency.

pressure.

Recommended oil grade: SAE 0W-30 or 5W-30, meeting ACEA A5/B5 or Volvo
specification.
Oil capacity: 5.8 liters (6.1 U.S. quarts), including filter.
Coolant capacity: 8.0 liters (8.5 U.S. quarts).
The cylinder block is a high-pressure die-cast aluminum alloy unit. This
construction provides a significant weight advantage. The cylinder bores
are fitted with pressed-in grey cast iron liners, offering a durable
surface for piston rings and effective heat transfer. The block is a
closed-deck design, ensuring high rigidity to withstand cylinder
pressures from forced induction. The crankshaft is supported by five
main bearings.
The crankshaft is a forged steel component. Main bearing caps are made
from nodular cast iron and secured with two vertical bolts each.
Connecting rods are forged from steel. Pistons are specific aluminum
alloy units designed for forced induction, with a dished or recessed
crown to achieve the 9.0:1 compression ratio. Each piston is cooled by
oil spray jets and uses two compression rings and one oil control ring.
The cylinder head is a cast aluminum alloy unit. It employs a dual
overhead camshaft (DOHC) layout, with each camshaft operating sixteen
valves (four valves per cylinder). Valve actuation is via finger
followers with hydraulic lash adjusters, providing automatic valve
clearance compensation. Continuous Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) is
employed on the intake camshaft.
This hydraulically actuated phaser adjusts the intake cam timing to
optimize performance, emissions, and throttle response across the engine
speed range. The camshafts are driven by a silent timing chain. Intake
valves measure 31.0 mm (1.220 inches) in diameter. Exhaust valves are
27.0 mm (1.063 inches) in diameter and feature sodium-filled stems in
some high-output versions to manage increased thermal loads from
turbocharging.
The fuel system is a sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection
system managed by a Bosch Motronic 7.0 or Siemens engine control unit.
The system uses a hot-wire air mass meter, which measures mass airflow
after the intercooler for precise load calculation. Fuel is delivered by
an in-tank electric fuel pump to a constant-pressure fuel rail. The fuel
pressure regulator is mounted on the rail.
The injectors are sized appropriately for the increased airflow of the
turbocharged engine. The system incorporates a drive-by-wire electronic
throttle (ETC). The ECU receives input from dual knock sensors, allowing
for aggressive but safe ignition timing control to maximize torque while
preventing detonation. An evaporative emissions (EVAP) system and
exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) are integrated for emissions compliance.
The lubrication system is a pressure-fed, full-flow filtration wet-sump
design. A variable-displacement vane-type oil pump is used to optimize
efficiency. The oil pan is constructed from stamped steel. Oil is drawn
through a pickup screen, pressurized, and routed through a full-flow
cartridge-style oil filter mounted on the cylinder block. From the
filter housing, oil feeds the main gallery.
It supplies the crankshaft main and connecting rod bearings, the
cylinder head for camshaft and valvetrain lubrication, the CVVT
actuator, and the turbocharger center bearing cartridge. A dedicated oil
feed and drain line are critical for turbocharger lubrication and
cooling. The oil cooler is integrated into the filter housing. Oil level
is monitored by an electronic sensor.
The cooling system is a pressurized, forced-circulation design with
specific provisions for turbocharging. A centrifugal water pump is
driven by the timing chain. An auxiliary electric coolant pump may be
used to circulate coolant through the turbocharger center housing after
engine shutdown to prevent oil coking. The thermostat is electronically
controlled. The system uses an aluminum radiator with plastic header
tanks.
A dedicated air-to-air intercooler is mounted in front of the radiator
to lower the temperature of the compressed intake charge. The ignition
system is a coil-on-plug design. The turbocharger is a BorgWarner unit
with an integral wastegate actuator. The exhaust manifold is often a
separate, cast iron component.
The external dimensions of the B4194T are compact for transverse
installation but include the added bulk of the turbocharger and
intercooler piping. Approximate length is 600 mm (23.62 inches).
Approximate width is 700 mm (27.56 inches). Approximate height is 650 mm
(25.59 inches). These dimensions include the turbocharger assembly and
intake manifold. The weight of a complete B4194T engine, with all fluids
and standard accessories, is approximately 145 kg (320 lbs). The
aluminum block minimizes weight despite the added forced induction
components.
Engine oil and filter change intervals are governed by the Volvo
Condition Based Service (CBS) system, but a conservative interval of
12,000 km (7,456 miles) or 12 months is recommended for turbocharged
service. The timing chain and guides are designed for long service life
but should be inspected after 200,000 km (124,274 miles).
Spark plug replacement is required every 60,000 km (37,282 miles) or 4
years, with iridium plugs specified. The accessory drive belt should be
inspected every 60,000 km. The coolant should be replaced every 240,000
km (149,129 miles) or 10 years. The turbocharger's oil and coolant lines
must be inspected for leaks during service. The intercooler and
associated piping should be checked for integrity and leaks.
All torque values are for clean, lightly oiled threads. Cylinder head
bolts are tightened in a multi-stage angular torque procedure: initial
torque 40 Nm (30 lb-ft), then an additional 90-degree turn, followed by
a final 90-degree turn. Main bearing cap bolts: 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) plus an
additional 50-degree turn.
Connecting rod cap bolts: 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) plus an additional 85-degree
turn. Crankshaft pulley bolt: 120 Nm (89 lb-ft) plus an additional
90-degree angle. Camshaft sprocket bolts: 55 Nm (41 lb-ft). Spark plugs:
25 Nm (18 lb-ft). Turbocharger oil feed line banjo bolt: 25 Nm (18
lb-ft). Oil drain plug: 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
The Volvo B4194T engine was used in a range of front-wheel-drive and
all-wheel-drive Volvo models from approximately 2001 to 2009. Primary
applications include: Volvo S40 (second generation, as T5 in some
markets but often as a lower-output turbo). Volvo V50 (as T5, though
true T5 often references higher-output versions). Volvo S60 (first
generation, as 2.0T or 2.0T FWD). Volvo V70 (second generation, as 2.0T
for certain markets). Volvo XC70 (as a base turbo engine). Volvo C70
(second generation, as T5).
The engine was often marketed as the 2.0T or low-pressure T5. It was
succeeded by newer turbocharged four-cylinder and five-cylinder engines
from Volvo, and eventually by the Drive-E family.
