General Technical Data
The Nissan CG10DE is a compact, 1.0-liter inline-four gasoline engine belonging to the CG-series family developed by Nissan for small passenger cars. Introduced in the early 1990s, the CG10DE served as the primary engine for the Nissan Micra (March) in many global markets. It was designed foremost for efficiency, smoothness, ultra-low maintenance requirements, and dependable daily operation.
With dual overhead camshafts, sixteen valves,
multi-point fuel injection, and a lightweight aluminum construction, the
CG10DE represented a notable advancement in small-displacement engine
engineering during its era. Despite its small capacity, the engine is
known for excellent thermal efficiency, quiet operation, and surprising
durability when maintained correctly.
The CG10DE was intended for urban and suburban use where low emissions,
minimal fuel consumption, and compact packaging were prioritized. Its
refined combustion characteristics, stable idle behavior, and robust
design made it an ideal choice for economical commuter vehicles.
Although the engine produces modest power, it deliveries responsive
throttle characteristics and excellent drivability in light vehicles.
Its reputation for reliability and simplicity has contributed to its
widespread use and long service life.
The Nissan CG10DE is a four-stroke, inline-four, water-cooled gasoline
engine with a total displacement of 998 cc or approximately 60.9 cubic
inches. It is part of Nissan’s modern DOHC multi-valve small engine
family. The bore measures 71.0 mm (2.80 inches), and the stroke is 63.0
mm (2.48 inches), giving an oversquare configuration favored for
efficient breathing and high-rpm capability.
The compression ratio is typically around 9.5:1
depending on market calibration and model year. Maximum power output
ranges between 55 and 60 Hp (40 to 44 kW, 54 to 59 bhp) at approximately
6000 rpm. Maximum torque is generally between 79 and 85 Nm (58 to 63
lb-ft) at roughly 4000 rpm. Idle speed is usually set at 750 ± 50 rpm.
The firing order is 1-3-4-2.
The block is made from lightweight aluminum alloy with cast-iron
cylinder liners. This reduces overall mass while maintaining adequate
wear resistance. The crankshaft is supported by five main bearings,
ensuring smooth operation across the full rpm range. The connecting rods
are forged steel, light in mass yet sufficiently strong for sustained
high-rpm operation.
Pistons are aluminum alloy with
molybdenum-coated skirts to minimize friction and reduce warm-up time.
Piston rings consist of two compression rings and one oil control ring.
The crankshaft is manufactured from high-strength forged steel,
providing rigidity and low rotational resistance.
The cylinder head is an aluminum alloy DOHC design incorporating dual
overhead camshafts operating four valves per cylinder, totaling sixteen
valves. This configuration allows efficient intake and exhaust flow,
enabling the CG10DE to achieve excellent volumetric efficiency despite
its small displacement. The combustion chambers are pent-roof shaped for
improved mixture turbulence and efficient flame propagation. Intake
valve diameter is approximately 25 mm (0.98 inches), and exhaust valves
are around 22 mm (0.87 inches).
The camshafts are driven by a silent-type timing chain rather than a
belt, reducing maintenance requirements and improving long-term
durability. Chain tension is maintained automatically by a hydraulic
tensioner using engine oil pressure. Valve actuation uses
shim-over-bucket tappets requiring periodic clearance inspection, though
intervals are long due to low valvetrain wear.
Valve clearance specifications when cold are approximately 0.22 mm (0.009 inches) for intake valves and 0.28 mm (0.011 inches) for exhaust valves. The CG10DE’s stable valvetrain design contributes to its smooth high-rpm operation and quiet running character.
Fuel System
The fuel system uses sequential multi-point electronic fuel injection
(MPI) controlled by an engine control unit (ECU). Fuel is delivered from
an in-tank electric pump through a high-pressure line to a fuel rail
that supplies four electronically actuated injectors. Fuel pressure is
maintained around 300 kPa (43 psi) by a vacuum-referenced regulator. The
injectors are pintle-type units providing fine atomization for improved
combustion efficiency.
The ECU controls injection timing and pulse width based on inputs from
various sensors including the mass air flow (MAF) sensor, throttle
position sensor (TPS), coolant temperature sensor, intake air
temperature sensor, crank angle sensor, and oxygen sensor. The system
operates in closed loop under light loads for optimal fuel economy and
transitions to open loop under high load or wide-open throttle.
Recommended fuel is unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of at least
95 RON (91 AKI). The fuel filter should be replaced every 40,000 km
(25,000 miles).
Lubrication System
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized wet-sump type using a
trochoid-style oil pump driven by the crankshaft. Oil is drawn through a
mesh strainer in the sump and pumped through the full-flow oil filter
before being delivered to the crankshaft bearings, camshafts, and
valvetrain components. The CG10DE includes integrated oil galleries
supplying pressurized oil to the timing chain tensioner.
Oil capacity with filter is approximately 3.1 liters (3.3 US quarts, 2.7
imperial quarts). Normal oil pressure at 3000 rpm is around 350 to 450
kPa (50 to 65 psi), and idle pressure is typically above 70 kPa (10
psi). Recommended engine oil viscosity is SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30. Oil and
filter should be replaced every 10,000 km (6,000 miles) under normal use
and more frequently under severe driving conditions.
Cooling System
The cooling system is a liquid-cooled, forced-circulation design. A belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulates coolant through the engine block, head, radiator, and heater core. The thermostat begins to open at approximately 82°C (180°F) and is fully open near 95°C (203°F). Total cooling system capacity is about 5.0 liters (5.3 US quarts, 4.4 imperial quarts).
A cross-flow aluminum radiator with an electric cooling fan maintains
operating temperature. The fan is controlled by the ECU via a thermal
switch and relay. A coolant temperature sensor provides temperature data
to the ECU for mixture and timing adjustments.
Coolant should be replaced every 40,000 km (25,000 miles) or every two
years. The cooling system includes an overflow tank, pressure cap
(typically rated at 88 kPa or 13 psi), and bypass passages for rapid
warm-up and stable temperature regulation.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The induction system uses a plastic air intake duct, resonator chamber
to reduce induction noise, and a dry-type replaceable paper air filter
element. The intake manifold is cast aluminum with long, tuned runners
optimized for mid-range torque delivery. The throttle body is
cable-operated and incorporates an idle air control valve (IACV) for
idle stabilization. The mass air flow sensor measures incoming air
volume, allowing precise ECU management.
The exhaust system begins with a cast-iron or stainless-steel manifold
feeding into a catalytic converter mounted close to the engine to ensure
rapid light-off. Downstream oxygen sensors provide closed-loop feedback.
The muffler and resonator assemblies are designed to minimize noise
while maintaining acceptable backpressure.
Ignition and Electrical System
The ignition system is fully electronic and distributorless. Four individual coil-on-plug (COP) modules deliver spark to each cylinder independently. The crank angle sensor, located within the timing case, provides the ECU with precise rotational data for spark timing. Spark plugs are long-reach, small-diameter units, typically NGK BKR5E or equivalent, gapped to approximately 1.1 mm (0.043 inches).
Spark plug replacement is recommended every 20,000 to 30,000 km (12,000 to 18,000 miles). The alternator supplies between 60 and 80 amperes depending on vehicle application. The starter motor is a reduction-gear unit for efficient starting in all climates.
Other Systems
The PCV system routes crankcase vapors to the intake for re-burning, reducing emissions and maintaining internal cleanliness. The EVAP system prevents fuel vapor from escaping to the atmosphere. Some CG10DE variants include EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) to reduce NOx emissions. The ECU includes diagnostic capabilities similar to early OBD-II systems, storing fault codes retrievable through diagnostic connectors.
Dimensions and Weight
The CG10DE engine is extremely compact. Approximate dimensions are: length 540 mm (21.3 inches), width 520 mm (20.5 inches), and height 620 mm (24.4 inches). Dry weight is around 85 to 95 kg (187 to 209 lbs), depending on accessories. The lightweight design enhances vehicle handling and fuel efficiency. The engine is configured for transverse installation in front-wheel-drive layouts.
Maintenance Data
Routine maintenance ensures long service life. Oil and filter should be replaced every 10,000 km (6,000 miles). Air filter replacement is recommended every 20,000 km (12,000 miles). Fuel filter replacement every 40,000 km (25,000 miles). Spark plugs should be inspected every 20,000 km and replaced as necessary. Valve clearance inspection is recommended every 60,000 to 80,000 km. Coolant should be replaced every two years or 40,000 km.
The timing chain is designed for the life of the engine but should be inspected at high mileage. Engine idle speed should remain at roughly 750 rpm. Standard compression pressure is approximately 1,200 to 1,400 kPa (174 to 203 psi). Maximum permissible variation between cylinders should not exceed 100 kPa (15 psi).
Tightening Torques
Cylinder head bolts tighten in several stages to a final torque of 98 Nm
(72 lb-ft).
Main bearing cap bolts: 50 Nm (37 lb-ft).
Connecting rod bolts: 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) plus 60 degrees.
Camshaft bearing cap bolts: 9 Nm (7 lb-ft).
Flywheel bolts: 88 Nm (65 lb-ft).
Crankshaft pulley bolt: 120 Nm (89 lb-ft).
Intake manifold bolts: 22 Nm (16 lb-ft).
Exhaust manifold nuts: 28 Nm (21 lb-ft).
Spark plugs: 18 Nm (13 lb-ft).
Drain plug: 34 Nm (25 lb-ft).
Vehicle Applications
Primary applications of the CG10DE include the Nissan Micra (March) K11 series from the early 1990s through the 2000s. It was also used in select compact models for global markets requiring low emissions and exceptional fuel economy. The combination of smoothness, efficiency, and dependable performance made the CG10DE one of Nissan’s most successful small engines.
