The Chrysler 420A is an inline-four, dual
overhead camshaft (DOHC), 16-valve gasoline engine. This engine was a
product of the Chrysler-Mitsubishi partnership. It shares a foundational
design with the Mitsubishi 4G series of engines. The 420A is a
non-interference engine. Production of the 420A engine occurred from
1994 through 2000.
It is distinct from the Neon's 2.0-liter engine and was engineered for
transverse mounting in front-wheel-drive applications. The engine
delivers smooth operation and reasonable power for its era, with a focus
on durability and serviceability. The cylinder head design allows for
high-revving capability. Its construction employs a cast-iron cylinder
block and an aluminum cylinder head.
Engine Type: Inline-four cylinder, liquid-cooled, four-stroke gasoline
engine.
Bore: 87.5 mm (3.44 in).
Stroke: 83.0 mm (3.27 in).
Displacement: 1996 cc (121.8 cu.in).
Compression Ratio: 9.6:1.
Firing Order: 1-3-4-2.
Cylinder Numbering: Number 1 cylinder is at the timing belt end.
Engine Rotation (viewed from the flywheel end): Clockwise.
Fuel Requirement: Unleaded gasoline, 87 pump octane minimum.
Power Output: 140 Hp (104 kW) at 6000 RPM.
Torque Output: 130 lb-ft at 4800 RPM.
Governed Speed: 6750 RPM.
Oil Pressure (at operating temperature): 50 psi at 3000 RPM (minimum 11
psi at idle).
The cylinder block is manufactured from cast iron. It employs a
deep-skirt design for increased rigidity. The block integrates the upper
half of the crankcase. Cylinder bores are machined directly into the
block material; no separate liners are used. The block features five
main bearing caps, also made of cast iron, which are secured with two
vertical bolts and one side bolt per cap for enhanced bottom end
stability.
The crankshaft is a nodular iron casting with five main journals and
four crankpins. Connecting rods are forged steel, with sintered metal
powder (powdered metal) rod caps. Pistons are constructed from aluminum
alloy with two valve recesses to accommodate valve lift. Each piston
uses two compression rings and one oil control ring. Piston pins are a
press-fit in the rod small end.
The cylinder head is an aluminum alloy casting with integrated camshaft
bearing journals. It uses a dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) configuration,
with the camshafts driven by a single-stage timing belt. The valve train
employs a shim-over-bucket design for valve clearance adjustment;
adjuster shims are located atop the valve lifters (buckets). Valve seat
angles are 45 degrees. The cylinder head uses a pent-roof combustion
chamber design with a centrally located spark plug.
Valve Arrangement: DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder (16 total).
Intake Valve Head Diameter: 34.5 mm (1.358 in).
Exhaust Valve Head Diameter: 29.5 mm (1.161 in).
Intake Valve Stem Diameter: 6.48 mm (0.2551 in).
Exhaust Valve Stem Diameter: 6.455 mm (0.2541 in).
Valve Lift (Intake and Exhaust): 10.0 mm (0.394 in).
Valve Lash (Clearance): 0.15-0.20 mm (0.006-0.008 in) cold for both
intake and exhaust.
Camshaft Drive: Toothed timing belt with automatic hydraulic tensioner.
The fuel system is a multi-port, sequential electronic fuel injection
(SFI) system. The system uses a return-type design with a
chassis-mounted fuel filter. The primary components are a fuel tank, an
in-tank electric fuel pump, a fuel rail, and four injectors. The fuel
pressure regulator is diaphragm-type, mounted on the fuel rail. Fuel
pressure is maintained at a constant 47 psi (324 kPa) above manifold
absolute pressure.
Fuel Injection Type: Sequential Multi-Port Fuel Injection (SFI).
Fuel Pressure (with vacuum hose disconnected): 47 psi (324 kPa).
Fuel Injector Flow Rate: 140 cc/min at 43.5 psi.
Fuel Injector Resistance: 11.5-13.5 ohms.
Throttle Body Bore Diameter: 52 mm (2.05 in).
Idle Air Control: Stepper motor type.
Idle Speed (base, in neutral): 750 ± 50 RPM.
The lubrication system is a pressure-fed, full-flow type with a
gear-type oil pump. The oil pump is driven directly by the crankshaft.
The system includes a screw-on, disposable full-flow oil filter and an
oil-to-coolant heat exchanger (oil cooler). Oil is drawn from a baffled
sump, pressurized by the pump, sent through the filter, and then
directed to the main oil gallery in the block. From the main gallery,
oil feeds the crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod bearings, and
cylinder head components. The camshaft journals and valve lifters
receive pressurized oil. Oil returns to the sump via drain passages.
Oil Pump Type: Gear-type, crankshaft-driven.
Oil Capacity (with filter change): 4.25 US quarts (4.0 liters).
Oil Capacity (dry fill): 5.0 US quarts (4.7 liters).
Oil Filter Type: Spin-on disposable, full-flow.
Relief Valve Opening Pressure: 60 psi (414 kPa).
Oil Type (recommended): API certified SG/CD or later, 10W-30 viscosity.
The cooling system is a pressurized, pump-driven system with a crossflow
aluminum radiator. The water pump is belt-driven from the crankshaft
pulley. A thermostat regulates coolant temperature, opening at 192°F
(89°C). Coolant flow is directed from the pump through the block and
cylinder head, then to the radiator via the thermostat housing. A
separate coolant bypass circuit operates during warm-up. The system
includes a coolant recovery reservoir.
Cooling System Type: Pressurized, pump-driven, with thermostatic
control.
Coolant Capacity: 7.5 US quarts (7.1 liters).
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 192°F (89°C).
Radiator Cap Pressure Rating: 15 psi (103 kPa).
Water Pump Drive: Serpentine accessory belt.
The ignition system is a distributorless waste-spark system with two
separate ignition coils mounted together in a coil pack. The Engine
Control Module (ECM) triggers the coils based on signals from the
crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor.
Each coil fires two spark plugs simultaneously (one on the compression
stroke, its paired cylinder on the exhaust stroke). Spark plug gap is
1.0 mm (0.039 in). Recommended spark plug type is a copper-core resistor
plug.
The engine is equipped with multiple emission control systems. These
include a Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system, an Exhaust Gas
Recirculation (EGR) system, a charcoal canister for evaporative
emissions (EVAP) control, and a three-way catalytic converter. The ECM
uses heated oxygen sensors (HO2S) upstream and downstream of the
catalytic converter for fuel mixture and catalyst efficiency monitoring.
Overall Length: 580 mm (22.8 in).
