The Chrysler EDZ is an inline-four cylinder,
dual overhead camshaft (DOHC), 16-valve gasoline engine. This 2.4-liter
powerplant is a member of Chrysler's "Neon" engine family, derived from
the earlier Chrysler 2.2/2.5L K-car engines but heavily modernized.
Production was prominent from the mid-1990s through the mid-2000s. The
EDZ engine is constructed with a cast-iron cylinder block and an
aluminum cylinder head. It is an interference engine design.
A defining operational characteristic is its use of a toothed rubber
timing belt to drive the camshafts and water pump. The EDZ served as a
workhorse engine across Chrysler's compact and midsize vehicle lineup,
emphasizing durability, low-end torque, and cost-effective
serviceability over high-revving performance. The engine is mounted
transversely in front-wheel-drive applications. Its design is noted for
relative mechanical simplicity, though certain emission control
subsystems require specific attention.
Engine Type: Inline-four cylinder, liquid-cooled, four-stroke gasoline
engine.
Bore: 87.5 mm (3.44 in).
Stroke: 101.0 mm (3.98 in).
Displacement: 2429 cc (148.2 cu.in).
Compression Ratio: 9.5:1.
Firing Order: 1-3-4-2.
Cylinder Numbering: Number 1 cylinder is at the accessory drive (front)
end.
Engine Rotation (viewed from the flywheel end): Clockwise.
Fuel Requirement: Unleaded regular gasoline, 87 pump octane (AKI 87 /
RON 92) minimum.
Power Output: 143 Hp at 5200 RPM to 152 Hp at 5500 RPM (106-113 kW),
depending on application.
Torque Output: 155 lb-ft at 4000 RPM to 158 lb-ft at 4000 RPM, depending
on application.
Maximum Engine Speed: 6200 RPM.
Oil Pressure (at operating temperature): 25-80 psi at 2000 RPM (minimum
4 psi at idle).
The cylinder block is manufactured from cast iron. It is a rigid,
deep-skirt design that integrates the upper crankcase. The cylinder
bores are machined directly into the block material. The block assembly
incorporates five main bearing saddles. The main bearing caps are
constructed from cast iron and are secured with two vertical bolts each.
The crankshaft is a nodular iron casting with five main journals and
four crankpins.
Connecting rods are forged steel with replaceable bearing inserts.
Pistons are constructed from hypereutectic aluminum alloy. Each piston
uses three rings: a steel top compression ring, a cast-iron second
compression ring, and a three-piece oil control ring. The piston pin is
a press-fit in the connecting rod small end.
The cylinder head is an aluminum alloy casting with integrated camshaft
bearing journals. It employs a dual overhead camshaft (DOHC)
configuration. The camshafts are driven by a single toothed timing belt
from the crankshaft. The valvetrain uses a direct-acting design with
mechanical bucket tappets. Valve clearance is adjusted using select-fit
shims located atop the tappets, beneath the camshaft lobes. The
combustion chamber is a pent-roof design with a centrally located spark
plug.
Valve Arrangement: DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder (16 total).
Intake Valve Head Diameter: 34.5 mm (1.358 in).
Exhaust Valve Head Diameter: 29.5 mm (1.161 in).
Intake Valve Stem Diameter: 6.48 mm (0.255 in).
Exhaust Valve Stem Diameter: 6.455 mm (0.254 in).
Valve Lift (Intake): 6.6 mm (0.260 in).
Valve Lift (Exhaust): 6.6 mm (0.260 in).
Valve Lash (Clearance): Mechanical buckets with select-fit shims.
Clearance is 0.15-0.25 mm (0.006-0.010 in) for intake, 0.25-0.35 mm
(0.010-0.014 in) for exhaust, checked cold.
Camshaft Drive: Toothed rubber timing belt with hydraulic automatic
tensioner.
The fuel system is a sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection
(SFI) system. The system is a return-type design on most applications.
Primary components include an in-tank electric fuel pump, a
chassis-mounted fuel filter, a fuel rail, and four injectors. Fuel
pressure is regulated by a diaphragm-type pressure regulator mounted on
the fuel rail.
The system employs a conventional cable-operated throttle body. The
evaporative emission control (EVAP) system, while separate, is a known
source of diagnostic trouble codes; leaks frequently originate from the
fuel filler cap or cracked vacuum hoses in the purge circuit.
Fuel Injection Type: Sequential Multi-Port Fuel Injection (SFI).
Fuel Pressure (at rail, with vacuum hose disconnected): 49.2 psi (339
kPa).
Fuel Injector Flow Rate: 135-145 cc/min at 43.5 psi, depending on
application.
Fuel Injector Resistance: 11.5-13.5 ohms.
Throttle Body Bore Diameter: 52 mm (2.05 in).
Idle Air Control: Stepper motor type.
Idle Speed (base, in neutral): 750 ± 50 RPM.
The lubrication system is a pressure-fed, full-flow design with a
rotor-type oil pump. The oil pump is mounted inside the front engine
cover and is driven directly by the crankshaft via a hexagon drive. The
system incorporates a screw-on, disposable full-flow oil filter mounted
on the right side of the cylinder block.
Oil is drawn from a stamped steel oil pan, pressurized, filtered, and
directed to the main oil gallery. Passages feed the crankshaft main and
rod bearings, camshaft bearings, and balance shaft bearings (if
equipped). A pressure relief valve is located in the oil pump housing.
Oil Pump Type: Rotor-type (gerotor), crankshaft-driven.
Oil Capacity (with filter change): 4.5 US quarts (4.3 liters).
Oil Capacity (dry fill): 5.0 US quarts (4.7 liters).
Oil Filter Type: Spin-on disposable, full-flow.
Relief Valve Opening Pressure: 55-65 psi (379-448 kPa).
Oil Type (recommended): API certified SL or later, 10W-30 viscosity.
The cooling system is a pressurized, pump-driven system with an aluminum
or copper/brass crossflow radiator. The water pump is mounted to the
front of the cylinder block and is driven by the timing belt. This
design necessitates water pump replacement during timing belt service. A
wax-pellet thermostat regulates coolant temperature, opening at
approximately 195°F (91°C). Coolant circulates from the pump through the
block and cylinder head. The system includes a plastic coolant recovery
reservoir.
Cooling System Type: Pressurized, pump-driven, with thermostatic
control.
Coolant Capacity: 7.5 US quarts (7.1 liters).
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 195°F (91°C).
Radiator Cap Pressure Rating: 16 psi (110 kPa).
Water Pump Drive: Timing belt.
Coolant Type: Ethylene-glycol based HOAT (Hybrid Organic Additive
Technology) coolant, specifically MS-9769 or equivalent.
The ignition system is a distributorless waste-spark system. The system
uses two separate ignition coils mounted together in a coil pack. Each
coil fires two spark plugs simultaneously. The Engine Control Module
(ECM) triggers the coils based on signals from the crankshaft position
sensor and camshaft position sensor. Spark plug gap is 1.0 mm (0.039
in). Recommended spark plug type is platinum.
Many EDZ engines incorporate a balance shaft system to reduce inherent
four-cylinder vibration. Two balance shafts are housed in a cassette
located in the lower crankcase, driven by a chain from the crankshaft.
Some later applications deleted this system for cost and complexity
reduction.
Overall Length: 580 mm (22.8 in).
Overall Width: 620 mm (24.4 in).

Service Intervals:
Engine Oil and Filter Change: Every 3,000 miles (5,000 km) under severe
